Help Software Update fails to Connect

In theory there will come a day when Froyo or the GPS fix will be available from AT&T...

So every so often I go into Settings and then go to Software Update, click "Check for Update", click OK and for the past couple weeks it has ALWAYS told me that it failed to connect to AT&T's servers. If I try and check again it tells me that 24 hours has not elapsed since I made my last request. (Even though that request failed).

I've tried it in Airplane mode with Wi-Fi enabled and I've tried it in normal mode but using Wi-Fi and in 3G mode (not connected to any Wi-Fi network).

Am I crazy? The day I got my phone I was able to retrieve an update (so it used to work) and I have not rooted my phone or "mucked with it" in any fashion.

Which firmware are you running? I started having the same issue after I flashed to JH3

Here's all the 'numbers' I can find

Firmware: 2.1-update1
Baseband: I897UCJF6
Kernel: 2.6.29 jetaek.lee@sep-11 #2
Build #: ECLAIR

Should all be stock stuff.

If this means it's "broken" I can always take it back to AT&T...

Nope, you're running all original stuff. I guess AT&T is having problems with their servers or took them offline.

Well mine tells me there's no update, so don't worry about it.

i hear it wont connect if youre rooted, if you unroot it should work. youll hear about any update, just unroot then and get the update, thats what i plan on doing atleast

Woah, you received an update? For real? By going into settings and manually checking? What update was it?

I was told by ATT tech support that the update functionality has never been "turned on".

If that's true, then how do we get the Froyo update when it is ready? Is that what AT&T said to you exactly? And if so, did you ask them what I just asked?

I know there are no updates available, but it just feels like I am going to miss out on one when it does become available.

I was asking because I was expecting for the update in Sept, however the girl I was speaking to was clueless.

This was just one of many data points causing me to return my Captivate.

i've never been able to check for updates since I got the phone...was having the same issue where it would just say "failed to connect" or whatever...

I saw this i think somewhere on here this morning...worked for me

Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>
Menu>Filter>All>
Device Management>Clear Data

Reboot and check for updates again
