Root Droid X coming tomorrow....ROOT?!

I have done A LOT of reading on these and other forums about rooting and I am not going to lie there is so much that it can get intimidating. I have never owned an android phone but my girlfriend has a Droid 1 that I mess around with so I have a decent amount of familiarity with the OS.

I guess my questions are as follows:
1. Is the guide stickied at the top of this page the best possible Rooting guide for an X?
2. How hard is it, REALLY, to brick your phone (I mean really brick it) if you follow the directions.
3. Is it possible to just "Wade in" to the root waters? adding a little at a time?
3a. What are the OMFG must have this things to be able to do a good amount of "messing around" with root? Launcherpro and Titanium backup?
4. Should I wait until 2.2?

I am going on 2 weeks waiting for this phone, so I just don't want to end up with a paperweight over the weekend. Thanks in advance to anyone who adds anything to this thread.

1) rooting 2.1 is so easy, if you are familiar with adb than you can just root 2.2 without moving the su like you do if going from 2.1->2.2
2)Very,very,very,very difficult. As long as you do it with a fully charged phone you aren't in any danger
3)yes you can root and do nothing if you wanted too
3a) LauncherPro doesn't require root, but yeah TiBu, root explorer, rom manager, droid x bootstrap
4) No

Skeet, I'm a total noob and I'm here to tell you to take the plunge. You can totally do this. Here's what I did:

1) Get and run Universal Androot.
2) Get Root Explorer (well with the money. I use it all the time)
3) Follow the directions to move su (easy with Root Explorer)
4) Get and use Titanium Backup (can't be too safe)
5) Apply the Froyo update.zip
6) Enjoy!

It's all very easy. You'll notice in your reading that the people who had problems skipped a step or something like that. And in the very worst case that something does go wrong, you have a bunch of people like Droider13 ready to help out. The chance of having a problem is small. The chance of having a problem these guys can't help you fix is really small.

As for why do it? My phone is much faster now that I've used TiBu to freeze all the bloatware, and my battery life is amazing.

I appreciate the replies here and the android community overall, everyone has been so nice and helpful! I am going to play around with my phone stock for as long as I can take it and then definitely root

Droider i think you can definitely expect something from me lol, I doubt it will go 100% smoothly!

For a noob... MyBackUp Pro is the best... super easy and does require root access because it backs up everything. I used it instead of Titanium backup.

I rooted 2.1. Played around with a rooted phone for a little while. Got Koush's Bootstrap loader, made a backup with it. I then transfered su (superuser) over to /xbin/ (tutorial somewhere, super easy with root explorer). Then installed 2.2 leaked. Played around with it, then backed up everything again with MyBackUp Pro and made another nandroid backup with Koush's bootstrap loader, then took the plunge into ROMS. You can see in my sig what I'm running now. I probably try a new theme about every 3 days, hate it, and use Koush's bootstrap to reload my recovery.

I was in the same boat as you... I never had an android phone before and realized that with the .sbf file released that I could pretty much not totally screw up my phone. So i did it. You need to go to rootzwiki and get the bomb. It is all the files you will need in case you brick your phone. I recommend also plugging in your phone to your computer and letting it load all your drivers (im running windows 7) and then toggle the usb to PC Mode and let it load that driver, its the one you will need in case you brick your phone and need to flash the .sbf file.

Benifit of you being here is that there are tons of people that have messed up their phone and had to restore it to factory, myself included. You will freak out, pull your hair some, and post here and people will help you restore it. It happens daily and you have no worries at all my friend. ROOT AWAY!!!.

go to download rom, stock images, froyo 2.2 rooted.
wipe data + cache and do a nandroid backup i guess

So what does this do exactly then? It downloads the 2.2 rooted version but doesn't actually install it, correct? Because I'm on 2.1 right now, got up to that last step and didn't do the wipe cache/data and backup the rom, because I thought you needed the update.zip file installed first.

no its everything you need, and you don't have to wipe or backup but I suggest at least backing up

OK - I took the plunge. I did the backup but not the wipe of data/cache. Is this a deodexed version of 2.2 that it's installing on my phone? Can I try FlyX using the same method once this is done? (only replacing the download of the stock 2.2 froyo with the FlyX version?

no its not deodexed, but if you install flyx it is deodexed and yes you install it the same way

They both work well but Tibkup is much faster especially if you just want to restore one or two apps. With MyBackup you'll have to wait about 5 minutes while it reloads the backup from the sd card and then unzip it. Tibkup is instant. Saves a lot of wait time. But be aware you NEED root to even load Tibkup but not MyBackUp
