Root Will root accomplish these objectives?

I am almost ready to root my Eris. I am wondering if I will be able to accomplish the following:

1. Gain space so I can download more Apps. - I am down to 9 MB of internal memory even after cleaning up various programs, dumping cache, etc.

2. Totally eliminate the HTC phone dialer. Under 1.5 you could set a default dialer, since 2.1 this is not possible.

If so, would I be able to do these things without changing the ROM?

What ROMs would you recommend and where can I find them?

1. Yes. With root, you can use apps2sd which will store all your apps on your SD Card.

2. There are a number of differently desigened dialers out there depending on which rom you pick up.

As far as roms go, you have a few options:
If you are looking for a 2.1 rom, xtrROM seems to be the most popular.

In the 2.2 rom category, you have KaosFroyo, Cyanogen Tazz and Nonsensikal. All of those I have used and enjoyed. I personally am using Cyanogen Tazz 3.0 at the moment.

Keep in mind there are tons of other roms out there. You can find links to them here or over at xda-developers.com.

If you don't want to change your ROM, I take it to mean that you're a fan of HTC Sense. If that's the case check out xtrSense... it has a2sd built in and its also overclocked so your phone should run super smooth once you get all your apps off your internal memory. With Titanium Backup you can even save most of your preferences and system settings (doesn't work too well going between non-sense ROMs but I had no problem going from a rooted stock phone [flashing engtools3.zip rather than a custom ROM] to xtrSense). I've been running it now for almost 2 months and I've never loved my phone more. I've tried a couple other ROMs as well, including non-sense but I always come back to xtrSense.

As far as your dialer question I've never really messed with it... I've never been plagued with the infamous dialer lag that so many other Eris owners seem to have.

Froyo (2.2) supports apps2sd, but not all apps support this yet. They are working on it though. It's nice when it works. Frees up a ton of memory.


**Edit** Most of the apps have been updated to support this, but are still a few that don't. just thought I'd throw this in there to prevent an argument.

Yes and yes.

Click the link in my signature and check out zach.xtr's Beta of xtrSENSE 4.1. You won't need to use Apps2SD (and I don't recommend you do if you don't have to and if you're not familiar with Linux partitions).

After setting up xtrSENSE 4.1 Beta and running the Cache2cache Gscript (this will give you the 60MB internal storage increase that you were looking for) you'll just need to find a new dialer. Most people are using Dialer One.

I do have to wonder why you want to replace the HTC dialer... It works a lot better under xtrSENSE.

Additionally, depending on what you're looking for, you should check out zach.xtr's other ROMs (they're on XDA, so still follow the link in my sig and then just browse Eris Development). xtrROM is like Sense, except that the launcher is removed and so are the widgets. Sense apps still work. This is great if you like Sense, but want to use Launcher Pro or ADW. xtrROM 4.1 Beta will be released this weekend and will have a Cache2cache Gscript, giving you that extra internal storage.

If you don't like Sense at all (especially the Dialer), you should take a look at tenzomonk and zach.xtr's joint-project ROM, Vanilla 2.0.3 Beta. The Beta is basically straight-up Google Android. It also contains a Gscript for Cache2cache.

Those are my recommendations. Of course, there are more options. Be sure to take a look over at XDA and explore them all before making a decision. And once you do root (it's the move), be sure to make a Nandroid backup and give a few other ROMs a try just to check them out.

I am now rooted and using xtrROM and have it all set up and have all Apps installed.

I have installed Dialer One and I am happy with that.

However, I am back to having low internal memory, so I guess I need to partition. Can someone tell me where to get Apps2sd or Apps2sd2?

Is there a link that will help me create the partition and get the Apps into the SD card?

good choice on the xtrROM, with dialerone and launcherpro plus its just about perfect.

I'm not sure which version of xtrROM you have installed - these are for xtrROM 4.x, and if you have 3.0.3, the basics are the same, but rather than run Gscript to switch on apps2sd, you restart in recovery and flash a file (without wiping first!) that you should see in your SD card called "xtrROM3.x-Apps2sdON.zip". After you flash that (or after you run the gscript in 4.x) and restart, your phone will take a bit longer to start as it copies all of your apps to SD.

Well, thanks to you guys I loaded xtrROM 4.5 and then loaded every App I ever wanted. I still have 75 MB of internal memory remaining!!!!! No partition necessary.
