experia X10 or Galaxy S

Hello all. am very new to all this technology so i really need your help.

I recently got an X10 on contract but got so annoyed by the fact that the x10 does not have a calendar as I have to sync with google mail (which i don't want to do). and the phone book is also sync'd to Gmail. I have a gmail account but don't use it that much. I only use it for gtalk with a few friends, 4 to be precise. I am a yahoo mail user. I found the internet connect brilliant and the timescape and mediascape very useful.
I then went on to order a samsung Galaxy S which I had tired in-store and really loved it. The camera is brilliant.. its way better the the X10. 3/4 of the applications on Galaxy i like especially the calendar as it the major application i use. The down side is It's network coverage is so poor. It does not matter if it's indoors or outdoors. the internet connection is so slow other than that the rest is fine.
what i would like help with is whether i can have some of the applications on Galaxy like calender, mini diary, layer,and live wallpapers on the Xperia x10. OR if i can have timescape and and media scape on the Samsung instead. I would keep the samsung and put up with the slow internet connection but would really love to keep the X10 if the above can be done.

i agree - at the min there are pro's and con's to both
the main downside to x10 is the lack of 2.1
however as npk21 says by end of SEPT we should have 2.1 when it will then OWN the Galaxy.

Got a chance to play with a Gs in the store the other day, imho it felt like a childs toy in my hands, the build quality is pure crap when compared to the x10. As others have stated, when we go to 2.1 it will outclass the Gs in every way.

There are calendar apps you can download from the Android Market. And I don't think you need to sync your phone boom with Gmail. Mine isn't synched.

I find it hard to believe the Galaxy S, with a 5 megapixel camera, can outperform the Xperia's 8.1 megapixel camera. Perhaps it's just a matter of finding a more adequate camera software, or waiting for the 2.1 update in a couple of weeks?

Timescape and mediascape are proprietary SE applications, so it's hard to imagine them on the Galaxy, at least not without some kind of hack. As for the other Galaxy apps you like, have you checked if they're not available in the Market?

I would keep the samsung and put up with the slow internet connection but would really love to keep the X10 if the above can be done.

I believe the specs are quite similar. The Galaxy has an amoled display, which many say is better than TFT. Others prefer the TFT screen. If I'm not mistaken, the Xperia has a slightly higher pixel resolution.

The only couple of things where the Galaxy has as a clear advantage, IMHO, are the internal storage of either 8 or 16Gb (depending on what part of the world you are) as opposed to the Xperia's 1Gb. But for storage you can always use microSD cards to expand. Unless you want to cram your device with songs and videos, I doubt it'll be a major issue. The other advantage is the RAM, which is 512Mb for the Galaxy, opposed to 384Mb for the Xperia.

I don't see such differences as enough to dump one for the other, and would certainly wait a little for the phones that might come out for the holiday seasons.

Hello from another newbie. I got the Captivate/Galaxy S and returned it within the week to get the X10.

Firstly the Timescape and Mediascape cannot be put on the Samsung, it is part of the Sony UI.

I am surprised that you found the camera on the Galaxy S better since in my opinion the Xperia's camera is far superior.

As for the calendar functions, I though both devices had the same Calendar functions which in my understanding is how stock Android OS handles it. I use CompanionLink, even though it is rather expensive to desktop synch with Outlook.

The Samsung has an AMOLED screen, which some like very much but it washes out in bright sunlight and is almost impossible to see.

I am ofcourse biased, but in my imho the Xperia is hands down the winner.

I have also owned both devices.

The Captivate/Galaxy S has a beautiful screen for movies, photos, etc. It is not the best for text though. Text on the X10 is much cleaner and easier on the eyes.

The X10 is also far more stable and less laggy than the Captivate. That's right, less laggy. The Captivate seems fine in the store and for the first couple of days, after that the lag begins. There are a ton of bugs in the Android OS build on the Galaxy S devices.

I personally find Mediascape the best mobile media player I have used. There are many cool things that it does, such as linking to YouTube vids and downloading album art directly on the phone. The MediaGo software is light years ahead of the KIES software from Samsung, and that assuming you can even get KIES to work at all.

The X10 GPS is undoubtedly the best performing GPS I have personally ever seen. I can get a GPS lock inside a cement (floor, roof, and ceiling) building with wifi off and in airplane mode. That is a true GPS lock and I have yet to see another device capable of that. The Captivate will usually not get a GPS lock at all (even outdoors in direct view of the sky) and will not hold it if it does. The GPS on the Galaxy S devices is a complete fail. If that is in any way important to you I suggest waiting to see if Samsung actually fixes this (they have acknowledged the issue and promised a fix).

On top of all of that, the X10 has a flash, the X10 has a notification LED, the X10 has physical buttons vs the soft buttons, and it will be getting 2.1 by the end of this month (as already mentioned). 2.1 will bring the exact same calendar functionality as the Galaxy S. Also, if you have Exchange, the included app on the X10a for AT&T is the exact same app on the market called TouchDown. It's a $30 app that you are getting for free. It provides full ActiveSync with an Exchange server.

I forgot to mention two things, the X10 does not have MT (Sony claims it is a hardware limitation, but we will see) and the Captivate has the best GPU currently on the market. Since neither of these are important to me, the choice was clear.

I was giving some thought of switching to captivate, after reading this thread. I'll stick to X10. Especially the GPS part, so true! It locks on in places I never thought possible.


However, I do miss a qwerty keyboard for better accuracy.
I'd like to see if Rogers gets the Droid Pro (possible name, suppose to be GSM version of Droid 2) and or the HTC Desire Z. I'm curious to see how they will perform.

I was an Xperia owner then got a captivate/galaxy S

To be honest, i am not happy with either phone
but i would say its a difficult choice

With the Captivate/galaxy S
you get an incredibly beautiful screen

It is great for gaming

I love the UI

The Camera performs well with no flash(i think the overseas version has it....U called it a galaxy s so i am assuming you live overseas)

Now...it is laggy....There is a delay when launching the menu
mine shuts down or freezes fairly often

Keyboard has lags

GPS is a big problem(idk how it is overseas but it plagues most american users)

Call quality/reception issues

The Xperia

Has an absolutely amazing camera..The best i have ever used on a phone
I love its form factor

I love the UI and mediascape

But no multi touch
screen is a bit dim(coming from amoled/super amoled it is just boring)
Keyboard sucks(but if you are using the international version just sideload various keyboard apps)

Still stuck on 1.6

Something tells me if you see 2.1
you may not see 2.2 or anything past that

If it had multi touch i would say get the xperia
but ehhhh its a difficult choice

I dont feel the build quality on the GS is that bad as you make out, it seems perfectly durable to me and I like the fact it is lightweight too,

This is quite debatable. Yes, with Amoled colors are far more saturated, so it looks more vivid for pictures and for videos.

However, for those of us who do quite some reading on the phone, TFT screens are far better. Amoled's text rendering is horrible, when compared to TFT.

So it all boils down to what you do most with your phone.

EDIT: There's also the issue of Android 1.6 limiting the display to 65K colors. The Xperia actually has a 16 million color display, which is only supported by Android 2.1. So it's a matter of a couple of weeks now and we'll see a big improvement on the Xperia's screen.

I know people who own the Desire and Galaxy and they all think the X10 has a more natural tone and prefer the X10's screen be it games, pictures or video?

Besides every person I know who has had any sort of Samsung phone in the last few years has ended up hating the phone! Feck I even threw my girlfriends old phone against the wall as it would never make or recive calls and when it did I would be shouting at her down the phone.

SE might have messed up on a few things but even owners of other phones say there is more they like about the X10 than their phones.

1) If Android version is a biggy for you, then go with Galaxy S b/c the X10 does not have the hardware for Gingerbread (Android 3.0) but not necessarily saying that Samsung will update the Galaxy S to 3.0, just saying the hardware is compatible with the upgrade.

2) AMOLED screens are supposed to produce better blacks and use less battery which is the main advantage for it. Under sunlight, however, it's difficult to read what's on the screen.

3) Samsung phones have great hardware (not meaning quality built) but crummy software support (since I owned an Omnia HD and they never fixed the issues on that well built phone). My guess is SE will definitely be better and quicker at updating the software compared to Samsung.

Also, to the OP, you should post on the Galaxy S forum and get their opinion of the phone. Asking people which one to get on an X10 forum is bound to get bias answers.

Hm...okay I guess nothing was official then, just some rumours. But I wouldn't be surprised if the rumoured 512MB RAM is the minimum requirement for Gingerbread. And I think getting Froyo on the X10 would already be a long stretch...
