Thank you everyone for responding to my question of "to root or not". I am rolling forward. I have downloaded the needed files and ready to rock. One small problem: I downloaded the Sprint update so my phone is on version .6. I have downloaded the .5 file on to my desktop but I don't know how to apply it to my phone. Any suggestions? Thanks!

You need to run the "RUU" from your computer..It should be an executable file. Be sure you have THC sync sfftware installed on the computer first. Then plug in the usb cord to both, and have at it! It will erase everything on your phone. NOT your sd card, however. Your contacts should be saved, if they are all "google" contacts.

Have a look at this-- How to Root .6 It should help.

I have the RUU, but it is a whited out block with the description below. When I try to open it I get a box that says it is unable to open, do I want to use the internet to find a program to open it??? MAke sense?

Sounds to me like you may have a bad download. Perhaps try one of the links above and re-download it?

Just to be sure, you download it to your computer then install it to the phone via USB cable. Again, be sure you have the software HTC Sync.
