No Froyo for Eris - Confirmed

..which is preferable to attempting to run Froyo on a non-rooted Eris, even if that were an option.

Which brings up a question that my son (the Eris owner) is going to ask:

Is there a Froyo ROM that retains Sense? I promised him we would root & ROM his Eris over Christmas break and I know of his fondness for Sense but his desire to upgrade the phone.

Go with xtrSense.

Sense with 2.2 isn't that much more useful than 2.1, and there isn't one around yet for our phone.

xtrSense 4.1 (or 4.5 if you wait for the weekend) is 100% stable, feature-packed, very very very fast, and the write-up for using it is comprehensive and idiot-proof.

I put all my friends (tech-savvy and NOT tech savvy alike) on this ROM when I root their phones.

100% success with eliminating a LOT of lag the Eris has, and making their lives better.

I've been running XtrSense for a month or so now. It's what should have shipped with Eris. No Lag, Overclocked at 768, Apps2SD, Cache2Cache or Cache2SD, JIT (I don't use it) and nearly 30 apps installed with a generous 96mb ram still unused. It's got wireless tether, why do I need 2.2?

Froyo rocks on the Eris with custom roms... Eris was an intro bottom line phone Verizon and HTC could care less to support it any longer. So we'll rely on Devs to keep the Eris alive with Froyo, since its obviously possible, but makes HTC/Verizon no additional income.

The Mobile world is based on phone sales... and supporting them until a new phone comes around. It's business thats all.

Another vote for xtrSense. Great rom. I installed it about a month ago, I'll never install again. Fixed almost all of my eris issues (lag, lag, and lag)

Well not surprise but it's nice to finally get an OFFICIAL statement. I just wish they would AT LEAST fix the darn Slideshow issue with MMS.

I also recommend XtrSense (if you want the senseui) or XtrROM (if you'd rather choose your own UI but still like some of the sense options). I'm still running 3 but will probably move to 4 soon.

I'm caring less and less about 2.2 these days as far as my Eris goes since i installed XtrSense. Now if only wife would let me do it to hers...hehehe.

Be curious to see whats out in 2012 when my upgrade is due

I also vote for xtrSENSE. Super fast, stable and sexy.

I didn't buy my Eris from Verizon and my NE2 is up this December from my old BB. If I had bought the Eris back in November (or later) with my NE2 I'd be FURIOUS that I am stuck with a phone for at least another full year that's completly obsolete and now, officially, written off by Verizon. I know it's a business and all they care about are sales but this is bullshit. I would call Verizon in a heartbeat and do whatever I could to get them to either

a. give me a NE2 upgrade asap
b. give me one of the newer droids (Inc, D2, X)

If they played hardball then I'd tell them that my 15+ years of being with Verizon would be coming to an end. If that didn't work, I'd hang up and try the same on a new CS rep. I suggest everyone else who is pissed off do the same thing.

I will not have to do this though because I'm rooted and LOVE my Eris. Unless something really, really, great comes out I don't think I'll even want to upgrade anytime soon. Everything I need I have on my Eris and it fits great in my hand

I'm glad I just made the jump then. Still haven't found a perfect ROM, but both I tried are definitely faster. Could XTRsense be better then xtrROM? I found xtrROM slower then KaosFroyo and it is already giving me the low storage warning. Woudn't the sense version be worse?

I'm caving - just didn't want the hassle, but I guess it's root and rom time. This Eris is on PagePlus, and for very little $ I get all the service I want. But I cannot upgrade to a better/faster smartphone on this service - so this is it.

xtrsense? Froyo? 2.x? In any case, I'm going to need a script to follow. Though I want more speed and flexibility, I don't have much of a tech background.

Anyone in san diego with a few minutes to spare? Is there such handholding available here?

You guys need to remember the Eris is a low-end device, or an entry-level device. It's like the Corolla to Android, whereas the Droid Xs and 2s and EVOs are your supercars of choice. Their capabilities are limited by hardware, which is not top-notch to begin with.

MY suggestion for your next phone, if you care about staying up to date with the latest OS and not having to worry if your carrier will leave you hanging after a six month relationship, you go and get a stock Android phone that is also the flagship of the carrier. The Devour is not the D1, D2, or DX. Yet the latter three have been supported for almost a year (in terms of OS) or will be supported for that long (the ones that just came out). Look at the G1. Look at the N1. The G1 runs Froyo (rooted) and is about to be two years old now. A year older than the Eris and Hero.

So, you really do get what you paid for. Some of us that got it recently paid nothing, or close to it. Others paid $50 with rebates and whatnot. Getting the $200 Droid (at release) may not seem reasonable to some, but then those people should not expect the best of the best in updates and performance. It's like buying that Corolla and then expecting the same performance as an M5.

Paying more does not always mean you're getting the best, though. So you may need to do some research prior to buying their next phone.

The G1 runs Froyo (rooted) and is about to be two years old now. A year older than the Eris and Hero.

The G1 stopped getting updates at 1.6 but has continued to be updated by the community. That's what I love about "open" software. (As I'm sure will continue for both the G1, D1, Eris, and many other android phones)

agree plus flash works with 4.1 as well and I still like sense...although overclocking improves somewhat not that a big deal as the rom is so good there is no lag at all at 586 and saves the battery a little more..wireless tether is awesome compared to what I was using with usb connection with Pdanet...also I found I didn't need Apps2SD with cache2cache as I have plenty of storage with about 20 apps...little eris is running so smooth and fast now I have no interest in upgrading to X, DINC or Fascinate right now and will wait for the next generation next year....

I am running KaosFroyo v34. Love it. I recommend root. I know a guy @ Verizon with an Eris, an rooted his also. if you want Froyo & gingerbread when it comes out, you must have root.

I don't think Gingerbread will be available for the Eris even with root. There are hardware requirements we simply don't have. Froyo works fine though. I'll be happy with this phone until my upgrade date.
