With regards to how to watch video

There are so many links I am overwhelmed.... Would you agree??

I have a couple simple questions.

There are two ways of doing video.

1. Video, etc... coming from OTHER equipment TO the Galaxy (Vibrant in my case)

No questions here except that the link I found gave basic instructions says you TURN ON "ALL SHARE" AND IT WILL PICK UP AN "ALL SHARE" DEVICE

AND

2. Watching what I have on my Android phone ON my TV....

This is where I have my questions.

1. I go to TV Out and check it. they say to use the 3.5 Jack and plug in that part of the cable from the RCA cable...
I don't know, but where is the 3.5 jack part of that???

2. What I want to do is use the HDMI part. It wasn't mentioned. I simply want to go from the micro usb part to HDMI...correct???

Thanks
Eric

Eric,
The AllShare App is designed to transfer media from a variety of sources including your Galaxy S via Wifi ~ no cable attached.
Be advised ~ video files on your Galaxy S (inc Camera video) transfered to your TV will be slow and most probably cut out as the Galaxy can't keep up with the transfer speed.
Having said that I have a standard .avi movie I converted a long time ago from one of my DVD's and this plays just fine from the Galaxy S to the TV.

Re Q1. The 3.5mm Jack you are talking of is the Headphone's socket on the top of your Galaxy S.
You need a special cable that has the Jack on one end and 3 RCA (Red/White & Yellow) at the other end.
You simply plug the 3.5 Jack into your Galaxy and the 3 RCA into the TV (or whatever you are using to display the content).

Re Q2. Samsung have mentioned that a HDMI cable will be available for the Galaxy S.
However, this requires special software to be written for the Galaxy S and as yet there is no news of when (and if) this will happen.

Wow. Thank you very much for your quick and fulfilling answer.

The only thing that does not make sense is the last part.....I believe there are other phones that either do OR say they can output 720p video with a micro HDMI cable, correct. Like the EVO?
Can you tell me if that phone does it...and if so. ..the difference. I just bought a HDMI to micro cable las night. Are you saying I really wont be able to use it? So at this time I could watch the Avatar movie just to use the phone with the TV. But I would have to go the other way with the avi. Correct? ?

I was wondering if you could answer me this. If I want to set a contacts number as default I know how to do it. However to use the functionality of it is not working. Can u help. In particular. If u r Joe and I set cell 1 as default. ..at this time, I go to call Joe shouldn't it either go directly to call him if I press him OR at the least ask if I want to call or message. But it should not pull up both numbers I have. Would you agree. It is not working

Also for the speed dial. I go into set up mode hit 3 then hit Kathy where she has a home number and a cell. Well isn't it supposed to put in her default number. An incredibly nice person like itself (for ur patience ) was helping me. I lost the thread. But still can't solvebit. Might you be able to help

Thanks a lot,
Eric

Sorry, am about to go into surgery soon so need to brief my surgical team... as such I only have a few minutes.

Re the HDMI cable
Yes, certain machine's will have the ability to use a dedicated Samsung HDMI to MicroUSB cable and yes they do indeed use 720p
Again unfortunately, although it has been advertised that the Galaxy S can do this at this present time it is incorrect... Again it will require further software which should appear either an an update through Kies or as an Samsung Market Ap.
If you want my take on this it's not going to happen, just like a few other software's which were meant to come to the Galaxy S which now are not appearing.

In reference to watching Avatar via AllShare ~ it depends on how the movie has been converted.
A straightforward .avi will little compression may work fine but if it's something like a .mkv file or divx or even the bog standard video recording straight from the phone's camera direct to a TV then you will get a lot of errors with buffer overruns and lockups.

The only way you can watch the likes of video is via the 3.5 Jack to 3 RCA but as that only comes out in PAL/NTSC the quality will be downgraded quite a bit.
It's okay.... just don't expect what you see on your Galaxy S screen to be the same on your TV.

Sorry... got to go.... hopefully someone else can answer your other questions but they should really be in a different topic so as to not cause confusion. :)

Beards, Again, Thanks so much

MOD....as to Beards last comment, please feel free to remove my last part of my previous post in this thread. I have no intention of confusing others. I understand.

After surgery Beards (what kind?)

-might I simply ask what other software was promised for the Galaxy but did not come out. You think it will. I am fairly new to Samsung phones. I had only one. I heard with the newer touch screens they have been fair at best up to this point. They had to sign petitions and everything else just to get updates.
With that said, they know that, Samsung said that that will no longer be the case. Especially with the Galaxy line of phones. Do you believe them.
Will Froyo be pushed out in a couple of weeks as the rumor says OR NOT, like the software you are speaking og

Let's see if I understand what you said about Avatar.
1. You do know I was speaking of watching the one on the phone?

2. You said it may or may not work well depending on the compression type, correct? So one of the ways was the "bog standard video.." right from the phone. Well, first, what kind of compression format is that. Second, for others you were mentioning, up to and including the .avi, I assume you were speaking of saving the file, and then doing some file conversion?? then putting back on the phone...to watch from the phone

Then, lastly you said that the rca cable will work, but not as good as the others, the 720p, etc... Will it be as good as HDTV or regular TV, or not even that..we talking a lot of static??

Again, thanks a lot. I am a little slower at this with what I go thru, but I keep pushing. Take care of yourself

Sorry Eric but I'm going to be out of action here for quite some time I'm afraid.
I head my own surgical team and we are going to be busy over this weekend sorry.

Hopefully someone else can come to your assistance.

In the meantime just to recap:-
If it is video that is produced on the phone by the camera and watched through AllShare you will have problems with stutter. The Galaxy S using wifi with AllShare simply can not keep up with the video compression.

The only way to successfully watch video over wifi using AllShare is to ensure the video is of a lesser compression type ~ this would require using a third-party software on your PC such as Xilisoft HD Video Converter.

To be honest, I don't bother with AllShare as it is so problematic both with wifi and the other hardware it is sharing media with.
Both my Laptop & Samsung TV have DLNA which is the software AllShare uses to talk with other hardware's.

I simply use a 3.5mm Audio Jack to 3 RCA (a Nokia CA-75U cable) if I want to watch content direct from the phone to the TV.

Also bear in mind using the 3 RCA cable you get to see the actual Galaxy S screen and all programs/games.
It's so much better than AllShare which only shows Video,Audio & Photo's.

I have my Nokia cable do presentations of surgical work I have filmed using my Galaxy S (I get one of my team to use my phone and film the procedure for me).
Basically, the Galaxy S does a movie of the surgery which is then saved to the phone's external SD card.
When I next do a lecture which requires video assistance I simply connect my Galaxy & Nokia cable to the large screen on stage and playback the surgery performed earlier.

Sorry Eric... now must definitely go...
