Help Turning off everything but Wi-Fi?

I hate the fact that my two other phones on my plan can't reply to my voice mails, this is a key way that we communicated quickly before my move to the Hero. Also, I am getting crappy reception of my Hero, so I am going to swap phones.

I still want to use the Hero as a really nice PDA, so I want to shut off all communications except for Wi-fi (i.e. data and voice disabled other than Wi-Fi). I want to retain the ability to toggle Wi-fi.

Is there a way to accomplish this? I am currently not rooted, but I am open to rooting, so suggestions either native, or rooted are appreciated.

Thanks!

Yes put the HTC wifi toggle as a shortcut on you homescreen

turn on airplane mode, and turn on wifi, works for me

That seems to work where other tweak apps have failed to get rid of whatever radio that connectivity icon in the system tray was for, but would there be any way to get rid of the airplane mode icon and the airplane background when you are at the slide to unlock screen?

Also, is there a way to keep wifi on in standby mode, or do I need an app for that (one that is easy on the battery)?
