Great idea Steven! Get some new blood flowing! :p

I'm glad that you enjoy this place! I too started as a noob here with my Droid and never really intended to be a contributing member. I was a lurker on virtually every forum I had ever visited. I'd grab whatever files people were sharing, search for answers to my questions and off I went.

I would say this about Android Forums...it has the BEST atmosphere of any forum I have seen to date. What a great place filled with great people! Android isn't going away anytime soon, in fact...it is expanding into all kinds of different devices. Android Forums will be here to support all of those devices.

As with the lurkers...while many of you may find the answers you came here to find...many people will come behind you with the same questions. Once you learn something new...you become a resource to the whole community! Share you experiences, share your opinions and I hope many of you will take the time to help a noob as your knowledge level increases :D...we all started without a whole wealth of knowledge ourselves. Helping others is always appreciated!

Hope to see some new faces sign up for accounts due to this thread. Again, great idea Steven! :)

I'm slowly stepping up my participation. At first I just read away, lurking in the background. Now I'm chiming in when I can add something to the discussion.

I think this post gets me to the Junior Member status. :p:p:p

Cool!

i was once a noob....afraid to help, after about a week or 2 i was flashing roms, changing kernels, adding themes, and helping on these forums. i alway join right away b/c i feel it is the fastest and best way to gain knowledge about a product. I love my android phone :)

I totally agree. This is one of the reasons why I started this forum-wide initiative!

Wow turdbogls, I've had mine since March or so and I'm still afraid to root. I really don't want a brick and w/ the recent discussions re: people getting lesser phones when they need a replacement I don't want to risk loosing my droid - i need my slide keyboard!

As you will read, it is virtually IMPOSSIBLE to brick a Motorola Droid. Rooting was the best move I ever made! I decided that independent, custom operating systems (ROMs) based on the Android open source far outpace the limited operating system that Verizon approved. My Droid has more capabilities than Verizon ever dreamed it could.

I guess the best thing about rooting and ROMming is this: every time a new ROM comes out, the phone re-invents itself into something altogether new. It never gets old or stale! There is always something going on in the Android developer community... while Verizon would love to see the Droid die on the vine, it just keeps getting better and better and better.

My participation in this site is about a fraction of what it was. It is just too annoying to use the phone's browser to read these forums (giant graphics and long forum lists) and the mobile skin for this site is only marginally better.

I really miss a lot of the folks around here, but I've been spending more time over at xda as the user experience from my phone is better and the information is just as good. Some of the users around here really crack me up like OfTheDamned, Eyebeam and IOWA. There almost needs to be a YouTube channel with those three plus Merf and Frisco. I could fire Comedy Central with no regrets.

I'll keep peeking in here when I:
  • am on a computer...
  • still remember that you guys are out there...
  • haven't seen a shiny object in the last 5 mintues
  • am not afraid that OfTheDamned will post something so funny that I squirt Coke Zero out of my nose (that really hurts)
The community here is excellent and I think it won't have any problems staying strong.

alright already... :) i'll look more into the whole rooting thing and probably do it soon. I've never been afraid to dig into any of my gadgets in the past but I've always known I could fix it if I made an error so had nothing to loose. I'm not so sure w/ the droid but I'm getting convinced to take the plunge. thanks for the encouragement.

At the risk of putting my lurker status in jeapordy, thanks Steven58. I agree with UBRocked about Android Forums and slowly emerging from my shell:) I'm planning on taking the root plunge tomorrow so I'll have some more new stuff to learn. Although I guess that means I'm a little on the slow side also:D

:) YW! Glad you posted!

Fellow lurker here, just saying hi. I always wanted a droid and when I heard they were being discontinued I finally pulled the trigger. Got mine via Walmarts wireless site, and with new Verizon 2 year contract phone was completely free. Very happy with it..

Thanks for posting! Glad you did! Feel free to post here. The folks are nice and helpful! :D

I may be on tomorrow, if I manage to screw up the rooting.
Have the "tools" setup on the comp but its too late to start tonight.
I've read about everything I thought could help and printed the method I plan to use.
Thanks to everyone who put these things together.

Fingers: Crossed. :)

What about those of us who signed up and then started lurking?:D

For those of you who are worried about rooting, dont be. Follow the instructions step by step and it really is a smooth process. Rooting will turn your Droid into a whole new phone, and opens up a world of possibilities.

Personally, I'm in the process of refamiliarizing myself with Java so I can start developing apps. Could take a month or so, but I'll have some time off starting after next week.

Freshly signed up and like most very seriously considering taking the rooting plunge.

Only concern is is the phone experiences issues and have to use warranty or insurance claim. Not computer savvy here either, but am very intrigued especially regarding the battery life.

I guess what I'm looking for is a final push me into the pool type of argument.

But will begin to be more active and offer whatever limited knowledge and biased opinions I have.

I have been lurking on these forums for awhile. I have found some cool apps people have talked about. I finally registered because I am ready to take the plunge and root my Droid. I have been nervous (and still am a bit) but have found the threads here helpful and when I have time this week I will be rooting my phone. This forum is very helpful and came highly recommended by a friend of mine.

I've been lurking in the forum for a long time, heck 12 posts since Dec 2009 should be some sort of record? But I am on here every day and I do read every post under the forums that pertain to me (which is nearly all of them). But my problem is I suffer from a poor self image so when I think about contributing I say, "no they'll think that's dumb," or "someone else will offer a better explanation."
