I like it, but they should have used a 2.1 EVO to test against our 2.1 Epic. Using a 2.2 EVO is a bit one sided considering that 2.2 is geared towards performance.

Yea I didn't think it was too fair to compare a product that has had two(?) minor updates and a major upgrade to a product that is brand new practically.

It didn't seem to make much of a difference in the end but I just thought that this review could have waited till the end of the month at least.

I think the benchmark tests would have produce different results if Epic was on Froyo. That was the only issue I had.

well isn't that part of the review that goes as a plus to htc? as in samsung isn't known to support their products (see behold) and the evo was the first major handset besides the nexus one (which obviously was going to get it first seeing as though it was googles own device and ran vanilla android) to get froyo so quickly. well thats what i personally think, that the plus for support would go to htc no doubt over samsung.

Well the Epic has only been out for 13 days... lol They said September for a release. I think the support for the Galaxy S phones should be on point since its been such a big deal.

yeah i agree with u there about the epic only being out for a little bit but at the same time, samsung is known to drop the ball for updates and support. i mean i get what ur saying but for me personally, manufacturer plays a huge part in choosing. i was gonna return my evo fer the epic but i mean i can't go wrong with either phone, plus htc is better with support. at least thats my opinion

I would disagree.

Reason being is that the average user doesn't want what will be coming, they want what is available NOW.

I DID like the way that they said that one was 2.1 and the other was 2.2 and that it would make a difference. I would also like to see the performance test redone when 2.2 comes for the Epic (just to keep the comparison equal).


Personally, I could care less who wins/loses. I have a phone that ***I*** like, and that's what's important.

It bothers me that none of these face-offs even mention the GPS performance.

Other than having the slightest bit of wobble on the keyboard, the terrible GPS performance is what keeps this from being a perfect phone.

I don't want to go back to the EVO, but I use the GPS a lot, so I can't have a phone with a bad GPS. Hopefully it's rectified soon...

exactly, evo has froyo, htc may make crappy products but at least they update them, will this thing ever get froyo? given the galaxy series has been out for awhile now, we should all be on froyo already.

It is possible they don't mention it because it seems that GPS performance/ problems do not span across all devices. As I have said in other threads, **MY** Epic GPS works perfectly. I know that other users however, do not have the same performance with their Epics.

So they may be trying to limit backlash, if they post that GPS is flawless and a person gets their Epic and it is flawed that person may post a negative feedback against the review. As happens here when someone posts that their own performance is good, there is often negative posts after that.

I didn't like how they said they didn't like the on screen keyboard from the epic. I have it and it is very responsive. I rarely mess up. The entire phone is responsive. I'm still getting used to the physical keyboard. Soon I will be flying on that.

I think both phones are awesome though. I have both. I'm using the Epic as my primary one though.

The thing to remember is that keyboard response and accuracy impressions are highly personal. I'm a studio musician and am often amazed at how differently trained professionals can feel about the exact same instruments.

I evaluate the Epic's keyboards the same way I do the ivories of that Yamaha baby grand in the studio room: very subjectively. So do most users and reviewers.

That said, IMO, the Epic's keys (physical and virtual) destroy the Evo's. That's one of the main reasons I haven't traded mine in.

EVO users will bitch and moan about this... but I agree for the most part. For me, the Epic is a better phone. Sadly, I've had more issues with my Epic than I've had with my EVO. But the pros outweigh the cons, I suppose.

i dont understand why you would say that evo users would bitch and moan? i have the evo and im still within the 30 day grace period so im thinking about returning it for the epic because the epic may be a better phone. but i think im going to stick with the evo because it feels more premium than the epic (plastic) and i just trust htc WAAAAY more than i would ever trust samsung. now im not bitching and moaning because the epic is a bomb ass phone and i can admit that. just because i have an evo doesn't automatically mean im going to get butthurt about every new super phone that comes out, even if it is better. but personally, i feel that the evo is the best. to each his own i guess.

It bothers me even more that some Epic GPS's work flawlessly. Kinda tells me that's a hardware glitch and not software, seeing as how all Epic's have the same software, but different build dates could have different hardware glitches.

I'm torn on whether to replace it before my 30 days, or just hold on to it and potentially sell it on ebay if there's no GPS fix, then get an EVO (or something newer that's out by then).

No. It's not a plus for HTC. The Evo has been out for three months. The Epic, only a few weeks. Put two more months under the Epic's belt, and I'd agree with you.

You should stop talking to 13-yr-old Evo users (or users that act 13). I'm an Evo user, and I saw nothing offensive about this review. I think it's pretty accurate. I disagree with the weight placed on certain things, but that's a personal preference.

I've seen several professional reviews pitting the Evo against the Epic, and sometimes the Evo wins, and sometimes the Epic wins. What does this mean? They are evenly matched phones, and I agree with that completely. I would never considering upgrading from my Evo to the Epic because I consider it moving sideways and not forward.

OTOH, if I had bought the epic first, I would never consider upgrading to the Evo. Again, it'd be more of a sidegrade than an upgrade. People who claim one phone is way superior than the other (in either direction) are fanboys and fanatics, and they aren't being objective. But that's their right also.
