Went to purchase a Desire but...

Yeah, well...

It started with the idea of purchasing an E72, having already ruled out the Berries and the Apples. Set me sights on the Nexus One, only to find the Desire a lot more inviting.

Did my research too, in the meanwhile (comparing the iPhone 4, Galaxy S, Legend, X10 et al - found the Desire to be *value for money*-ish)...

Off I go to a renowned electronics chain... And just when I thought I had ruled out the Galaxy S (largely due to pricing; but otherwise, 'cos I found the Desire, literally, *Desirous*), it stares at me with a lower price tag (season sale), the salesman keeps urging me to overlook the Desire and I trudge off in a huff.

Must sound silly... But can you folks please give me reasons to tilt the scales in favour of the Desire again? Yes, I have googled enough. But I'd really like to hear it from the users. And what better than receiving opinions, albeit with generous dollops of nepotism...

PS: I guess it was the SLCD version; not that it matters. Remember reading comparisons (with the AMOLEDs) elsewhere in the forum.

basically its the dogs nuts and no matter what anyone says its the best android device on the market currently with 2.2 (other than the nexus but internaly they are pretty much the same)

the thing with android is the community behind it, desire has the biggest up take and growing community out of all the devices and there is not a device that seems to match it in terms of functionality and power.

ive moved from a galaxy original. i will never buy samsung again. samsung have no concept of updating or customer support at all.

Ah. could you elaborate on that, please. I am noob on Android-related topics (just the odd googling). Yet to own an Android device, actually...

Just google "Samsung support" and it'll be a VERY easy decision in favor of the Desire

I wouldnt say its the dogs nuts - the desire has many flaws. It also does many things well. Personally i dont think android is as polished as my 2yr old samsung soul!! But the phone itself is a powerhouse and for that i rate it.

Please dont buy a samsung, I switched to o2 after 10 yrs with vodafone just to get a galaxy, bad choice!

Now have a desire back on voda, probably the best phone ive ever had! (not perfect though)

I think the Desire is by far the best phone, my friend has the Galaxy S and he regrets it now, we have compared our hansets and both of us rekon the HTC Desire is the clear winner, there is no such thing as a phone that is is 100% perfect...

It's a Samsung, nuff said. My last phone was, broke 3m into the 18m contract and kept breaking. That was enough for me not to choose one. Support is bad and the UI i find clunky.

Sgs is a fugly looking phone, you will be disappointed and ashamed if you buy it.

Desire is the best phone I have ever owned.

First of all, the Galaxy S looks like crap to be honest. It's plastic all the way around and feel cheap "wiggly" in ur hand.

Second thing is the user interface. If you're not planning to root your phone, desire's the way to go. Samsung's Wiz UI is an pretty much like all samsung products; it's illogical, ugly and slow. The phone has alot of lag.

Third thing is the Kies software. I've never heard a good thing to be said about this piece of shit. It pretty much never works, and when it does, it's slow and insufficient - again, a definite Samsung product.

As u can probably guess, i'd go with HTC

Please don't buy a Galaxy!!! My sister has one and when i compared it to my desire i realised how good the desire was! For a start, the galaxy is slow! when you are navigating the phone there is a delay from when you touch the screen to it responding which is more than annoying when typing a text message. the Screen lock button on the side of the phone is in the most stupid place ever, your forefinger ends up right over the button whenyou are holding it normally and you end up turning the screen off all the time. I could continue but i think you get the point. I like my phones and also did alot of research before i purchased and i can personally tell you that this is the best phone on the market FACT!!!

People who own iphones only have one because they are sheep following the Cool Trend of owning an iphone. If you are looking for a phone that does everything+It has flash and without a doubt the best web browsing experience only next to actually using a computer then this is the bad boy you want.

If you trust one person today then please let it be me!

Having just spent the last month or so researching both phones and finally going for the Desire, here's my

One other thing I forgot to mention. The latest batch of Desires seem to all have the SLCD screen as opposed to the AMOLED. That was due to an insufficient supply of 3.7 in AMOLED screens (from Samsung funnily enough) to meet the huge demand for the Desire. So HTC have plumped for the comparable SLCD screen. When I bought mine last week the box did not mention AMOLED screen in the spec on the box, so I assume it has SLCD.

The SGS, of course, has a Super AMOLED screen, which is supposed to look better than both the AMOLED and the SLCD.

To be perfectly honest the screen on my Desire looks great so far. Not that we've had any bright sunshine this week to see how it fairs in that kind of environment......I guess I'll have to wait until next June for that...

The desire isnt 100% perfect, but its close, it does pretty much anything i want it to do, not much of a convincing arguemtn on my part, i cant really construct an arguement in favour of the desire

have you decided on what network to go with ?

when choosing a plan make sure you have enough data eg MB, i have 500MB and ive used 10% of my allowance, i mainly use wifi at home and save my 3g for when i want to use googl navigation when im out

Where I reside, the handsets are not locked with any operator.

@Rastaman: I suppose the ones available here are equipped with the SLCD.

You're quite right. iPhone rip-off notwithstanding, I do find the Desire a lot better in design!

And thanks for that info on drivers, et al. Mine is an old 32-bit OS, but nothing like a timely warning.

I do plan to root the Desire... Been reading a lot about the custom ROMs, et al. Would you suggest against rooting the Desire? And you're spot on with the "wiggly" bit!

@chris290 & @DesireME: It surprises me as to how popular Samsung is in this part of the world. I must say I was happy with one of their Dual-SIMS. But yeah... Somehow never felt their products to be "value-for-money"ish. (Am NOT including televisions, of course.)

Well after owning only one Samsung I cannot speak much about it because it was just the samsung impression, not even android, but I did notice that you spoke of the Nexus one, well I did have that phone for sometime until my favorite carrier decided to jack up my data charges from $15.00 to $30.00 a month just because I had that phone. Enough about that, the Nexus one is nothing next to the Desire, it has the basic same specs, but that Amoled screen is JUNK at best, after only one week it started to have burn in on the screen, the SLCD on the Desire willl not do that, plus who can forget that Track ball HOW QUAINT, quite stylish in the 90ies, stick with the Desire there is nothing better, not even old Stevie Job's iphone!!! Had a couple of them also, slight mental slip at the time!!!!

Do not listen to sales people they are just getting you to buy what will make them the most in sales commission and that is all!!!

i ordered the 8182 being i am on the ATT 3G network in North America..

can't not wait till i get my phone..

i will give you feed back once i get mine.. i currently have E 71 and need a solid phone that has a great photo viewer..

i am a pro photographer so i need that function to show how to pose for me clients.

Yes AT&T did a scan and when found Nexus one phones took it upon themselfs to move you from the unlimited basic Data for $15.00 to the higher smart phone unlimited data that was $30.00 without even asking you, they just sent a message on the phone telling you it was done, worst of all they did not even sell the Nexus one!!!! OH well enough about that sorry for the rant but it does make me a little mad!!!

You will not be sorry but I would suggest that you put the stock Froyo on the phone, I did it to my Telus Desire and it is a much better phone and I now can receive the OTA updates from HTC and all of the Telus firmware on the phone is gone!!!! Granted on the surface it looks like there is no Telus firmware but there is, Telus blocks the 850 band because they do not use it, but AT&T uses it for Edge and until I did the stock firmware I could not get edge Data at all.

Believe me it is well worth it to do, plus it gives me a much better connection to the AT&T nerwork. Good luck and enjoy your phone, it is a great phone!!!

Where do you live?

If you live here in the UK, do NOT get your phone through Orange. They have a lot of their own bloat on their Desires.

I could not get Edge Data at all I had GSM voice but the Edge never would until I unbranded the phone, there are many post on this subject on another forum and like me when they debranded they were able to get edge on the Telus Desire. Plus AT&T only uses 850 for Edge other carriers in other places also use 1900 for edge and that could be why!!!
