I would disagree that it's about being afraid to post - maybe people lurk because this forum is not their style?

I notice that many posts I read on here tend to be from a younger crowd; maybe this message board skews to a younger demographic. That's great if you are in that crowd, but for me, there are some negatives associated with reading posts from young adults. It's like I walked into a high school or college campus, where I wouldn't really feel comfortable "hanging out" with that crowd because I am at a different point in my life and don't share the same mindset.

I use forums to get value/learning, and contribute when I think I'm providing value. But some of the posts can include social interaction/posturing or people trying to prove they know something, when really they are just speculating. I'm not interested in that aspect of the forum, so it's a turn-off when I open a thread and discover that people are talking about things that add no value for me. You can run into a thread that has 50 responses of people guessing about something, and maybe one person actually goes through the trouble of pulling out their phone and testing/verifying and posting about it. So instead of reading through that long thread, it would have been better if I just searched elsewhere for value. But for younger crowds, I guess that is great stuff to speculate about something and then see if you were right or not and where you fit in pecking order with your forum peers. Another thing I'll see is when someone misses the point of something another user wrote, as if the concept goes over their head. But instead of getting clarification, the person will post nonsense and clutter up the forum with stuff that is just silly to have to read through. But again, I would expect that type of banter on a college campus or dorm etc., and I think some lurkers just don't bother because this and other issues are pervasive throughout the postings on this forum. Perhaps it's just something that is inherent when dealing with smartphones that younger people love.

Well of course the forum is going to be full of "young adults". Most of the older generation can barely figure out how to send a text message on a standard phone and because of the old age hardheadedness refuse to learn. They have no understanding or use for a smartphone. Those that do seem to be stuck on that kick about Blackberry being the grownup professional smart phone.

Not so! I'm 52 and a power user. We also have a 72 year old guide, there, young whippersnapper!

Also while the search feature on forums is great, and hopefully will be utilized - if someone comes here and asks a question, either answer it or don't. If you're going to suggest the search feature, be polite about it. Nothing irks me more than when I go to a forum, (and use the search!), then ask a question because I want some one on one with my problem, and get a simple "Use the search." reply. Suggesting it is encouraged, but don't withhold the answer because they don't.

Lol I have been an avid nightly reader for the past few weeks. For me, it's not feeling comfortable with hanging out with a new crowd or any type of fear. I come on to learn in preparation for my future dream device Evo (until it's available for Sprint advantage. My friend a Project manager for Sprint, says it's been pushed back to October now, ugh) then I can finally kick this iphone 3g device off to the kiddies to play their little hearts out (which they do anyway lol)

Personally, I'm a helper at heart, so any questions I have already been answered by searching for the sake of not irritating anyone with the same old repetitive questions.. When i finally get the hang of all this intense modding/rooting (seems much harder and longer of a process than jailbreaking! not too mention the slew's of Roms that need intense investigating since they're so different and I have no idea what my needs are yet), then i can contribute help to the forum or atleast try to. Because most of you guys are so helpful, knowledgeable and super fast as is.

Thank you guys and gals for your helpful posts! The silent readers will always out weigh the active ones So your always helping more than you know with just one post at a time.

What does age have anything to do with this? I know plenty of "adults" who act worse than the "kids." In any forum (or society for that matter), you will find immaturity, ignorance, and worthless blather. At the same time, you can find insightfulness, information, and courtesy. Why would the existence of the negatives cause you to lurk and not contribute? Sounds like a pretty snobby attitude to have, especially since there is a wealth of good info in these forums.

There's no reason why we from an older generation can't relate or even accept the mindset of today's youth. It frustrates me to no end how technologically inept my elders are, and at the same time, these people hold their heads up high and pull out their "When I was your age..." stories. I refuse to become like that. I will keep an open mind. I will evolve with the times. There's absolutely nothing wrong with today's kids. As a parent, my ability to relate to the mindset of todays kids translates directly into a deeper bond with my own kids, and lets them realize it's not a lost cause to try to communicate with a parent who actually understands.

Do us all a favor. If you see someone's question not answered properly, or it was treated with contempt, speak out and set the record straight. You might not convince the idiots, and you might not be placed high on their totem pole, but rest assured there are plenty of us here who can ignore the nonsense. We will get your message and thank you for it.

Hi! Glad you posted! I guess what I'm trying to say and do is the following. I'm trying to say that posts don't have to be perfect or original. If it's a repost, it's not the end of the world. Forums do have a short memory, especially this one. We have literally HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of excited android newbies signing up every week!

Contributing builds a sense of community. Even if you don't have the "answer" to a particular issue, you may have had a similar experience and might be able to share a funny or sarcastic anecdote. All of this adds to a sense of community here, which I hope to help foster by calling the lurkers out of the corners.

Over in the Droid X and Incredible sections, we do have a good sense of community. We crack each other up and help newbies along. We want to be inclusive. I hope you all would welcome that sense of community and inclusiveness as well.

Hi! I got my Evo earlier this week and immediately joined this forum. While I'm still a noob when it comes to Android (just came from BB Tour), I'm not sure how much I'll be able to contribute but will say that I've found the topics and comments here extremely, extremely helpful in helping me get up to speed with my suhweet new phone!

one of the really rewarding things about my experience on this forums is being able to contribute. I had a ton of fun researching, writing it up, and updating it with more relevant information. I think I'm like most EVO owners...not a programming IT wizard, but reasonably intelligent and able to do my homework and figure just about anything out if I set my mind to it. I still have a ton to learn and I've absorbed so much information since getting first my Hero then my Evo.

For example, I never would have known what 'port forwarding' was until I wanted to use SubSonic to stream music from my PC at home to my phone anywhere I was. I would never know what "ADB" meant or how to use it until I wanted to install a custom bootscreen on my phone. I never would know what relevance "45 nm processor" meant until I started looking at whats on the horizon for microprocessors for phones coming out later this year. I never would know what Wimax, LTE and 'true' 4G meant until I read about the industry. I would never know the difference between LCD, AMOLED and SAMOLED until I looked into the different screens on the market. And I wouldn't have found another reason to hate Apple's way of doing business

Just like when you are a kid and ask your dad what a word means and he says "Theres a dictionary on the shelf, look it up", people should take that attitude towards everything else in their lives. I started reading this forum the night I got my EVO, as someone else said. I didnt JOIN for a short time, untill I had a problem that I couldnt figure out. Searched and searched for an answer, and when I finally found it (ending my frustration) I wanted to join to thank the person (think it was Earlymon). Since then I think ive added my few shreds of help here and there

I am a lurker on every forum I ever visit. Just how I roll I guess, usually only register if it is required to search. imo lurkers are a lot better at using the search function than the average poster. More often times than not the specific question has been asked and answered several times over.

I have never really been a part of any type of forums other than sports forums until I got a blackberry and then got started being eveen more hooked once i got my evo...this is one of the best sources for information you will ever find. you can get an answer to almost any issues you might have sometimes within seconds just by asking a question..no need to deal with sprint customer service and being put on hold...or waiting until tomorrow to go to a sprint store as i have found the folks on this site in particular usually know more than most sprint folks to begin with..also, most of the real "tech saavy" folks are on here late so there is always the ability to have a question answered. I consider myself to have a limited knowledge about the evo and such but have learned a great deal just in the past 4 months by this site....thanks to all for sharing your knowledge!!
