Does anyone recommend, use or just know of an email client other than K-9 for use with IMAP email. I use touchdown for my Exchange/Corporate account. I have been using K-9 for my email client, which is alright and gets the job down, but I am wanting more.
I have searched the MArket place but can' find any.

Any suggestions?

Nothing really at the other thread either ;-(. I downloaded and tried an app called Seven yesterday, but it never connected to Yahoo. I also was not fond of the internationl SMS it wanted to send out when registering a new mail server. I hope those are covered by my text plan, otherwise I'll be paying a $1 for an app that didn't even work. I see that Yahoo has dedicated mail apps for blackberry and iPhone. I wish they would make one for droid too.

Yahoo! Mail for mobile

The ones we have now, k9 and the stock mail app are lacking / buggy. I suppose there is hope that k9 will fix the bugs etc. It does have some nice features compared to the stock app including being able to save attachments. Perhaps the stock app will get some fixes? I am guessing no as they probably want to steer people to gmail. Probably the same reason the stock support for Exchange is quite immature. That I think is a really bad move as corporate users will avoid the platform. I am using TouchDown for Exchange, but wish I didn't need to.

That's because there are really no other options at this point, save for GMail app., regarding importing your POP3 accounts.

I can import my yahoo mail into gmail? How does that work? Do I need the Yahoo plus account to do that? I think I do in order to do forwarding. Funny thing is that if I did have a Yahoo plus then I wouldn't have the problem with the stock app causing dupe sent items.

There are multiple threads in this forum about yahoo mail (and issues importing with DROID) and using the GMAIL app to import other POP3 accounts, (including yahoo).

thanks colnago. I'll look around, but do you have a good thread in mind?

I do have a question about using POP with yahoo though in general. I f I do that then when a message is downloaded, it won't be seen on the web, right? I prefer to be able to see the messages in both places until they are deleted from either place. This is only available with imap, right? If so then pulling in yahoo via pop to the gmail app is a non-starter for me. I am also pretty sure that the pop interface to yahoo is only available t yahoo pro users, so that is probably not an option for me

Thanks,
John

Yeah, there was something specific which had to be done to get yahoo to work (never looked into it, don't have yahoo mail) and probably just manual settings. K-9 specifically says that some "hotmail paid accounts" don't work, not sure about yahoo.

By default, when deleted from the DROID, K-9 "leaves a copy of message on the server". This setting should be under the "account settings" in K-9. Should be additional setting for "reading", but may be handled under "sync" and "class" settings (sorry, don't have DROID anymore).

If you don't mind google having your yahoo message store, that may work for you, as GMAIL app is more robust.

gmail.com in the settings page has the option of gmail sucking in yahoo
mail at regular intervals. no plus required.

Did some searching and found and tested an even better solution:

Yahoo Mail free POP access Picobit

By changing my region to asia (only affects news) I can now do pop forwardng as well as pop polling with a free account. I setup the forwarding and it is working like a charm. mail came right to gmail and I was able to reply to the original sender from gmail. Very happy with this solution. This way the mail comes right through and I don't have to wait for gmail's regular polling interval which I think is an hour. I did not try that option as you described above. I think I need plus to use POP though. I didn;t try, but everything I read says you need plus to do POP, or use the asia hack linked above. Give forwarding a try I think you'll like it. The mail comes through much faster this way. Totally psyched as now I basically have my yahoo mail and gmail funneled into one app / inbox.

Thanks all,
John

OK, so now I another gap in the plan. I forgot that the gmail client does not handle attachments very well. In particular it does not let me save an apk file to install an app on the phone. It also barfed pretty bad on a zip file. Is there a way around this? One of the cool features of k9 was that it seemed to handle attachments well.

Thanks,
John

GMail app doesn't poll every hour...its pretty much "push". If you have problems with install, and zip files, you may want to install a file explorer program and a zip extractor program. I believe Astro has both with their explorer program. If not, there are standalone zip programs.

I was referring to how gmail will fetch mail from other POP accounts on the hour. I was not referring to the gmail clients (android or web). Some people mentioned that the fetch may even be more than two hours. That won't work for me. The POP forwarding is working great so far.

I have Astro and reallly like it. The problem I have is that the gmail app on my droid does not provide the option to save attachments. It looks like only images can be saved. All others provide "preview" option, but it doesn't always work. K9 handles saving attachments MUCH better. Hope future versions of the gmail app improve on this.

Thanks,
John
