Help Can't upgrade to 2.1, what the heck?

I have an O2 UK Dell Streak 16GB Pay-&-Go phone.

It worked fine and then I decided I wanted to upgrade it.

Inevitably, the update bricked it and it was stuck on the Dell logo screen.

So after freaking out and scouring more forums/threads on this, I found the below thread from Modaco which had the original build.

I was able to flash it as update.pkg and it brought my phone back to life!!

But it is still 1.6 now.

So again I tried the update - this time with the 8105 build on the Modaco 2.1 update thread. Still no dice. It gets stuck on the Dell logo screen.
I have tried all the builds I can find and none of them work. They all brick it except the original build.

I have not flashed the recovery although I did try thinking I could unbrick it, but it failed so I never did get anywhere on that.

I don't think I'm doing anything wrong but clearly it doesn't like my build.

Oh and after I update, I always get "open INSTALL_IMAGE failed" even when I try the original O2 build and that one works despite this "failed" error msg before it reboots.

*shrug*

Any ideas?? Anyone else have a build for me to try?

The Dell mobileupdate website is 404 file not found when you try to get the build from their webserver. I tried doing an update check and it goes to some web page on dell.co.uk and it just says it is up to date already.

I'm going to assume at this point that nobody else can either, at least not w/out installing a custom recovery and ROM.

I say this because every forum says the same thing - the update fails and it bricks your phone, then you have to go back to this original pkg in order to un-brick it and get it working (albeit still 1.6) again.

It would be nice if there was official word from Dell though. I'll blow up their Twitter inbox and see what they say.

I have heard from an 02 representative that they have pulled the offically 2.1 update because it was causing too many problems with the phone. Hence why anyone with a 1.6 dell streak on 02 at this moment in time can not update their phone to 2.1.

...unless we install a custom recovery which lets us install custom (unsigned) ROMs, right?

Yeah this is basically what I'm piecing together slowly, assuredly. It kind of sucks because I don't really want to install a custom recovery - yet.
