How many Epic Exchanges till U found a good one?

I'm on my third Epic... before I finally found a good one :D

The first two had problems with gaps between the top and bottom halves on the slider. First one had a gap as thick as a dime; the second one had a gap as thick as a quarter. On both of them, the two halves would click / slap together as you touched the screen.

The first one also had dim and/or unresponsive menu buttons (along the bottom) as well as a camera issue.

The third device has no gap issues, buttons well lit and responsive, and the on/off, volume and camera buttons are also MUCH better than the other two devices. The third phone's buttons 'click' much better; more travel and more positive engagement. :)

0 first one is still great.

i wonder if posts like this are made by anti epic people?

Uh, nope... I'm pro Epic actually. That's why I made the exchanges instead of giving up on the device.

While some people are anal about everything being perfect, others are about things being 'right.' It's evident by many posts in this forum that others have had issues with their devices, but it's difficult to sift through it all to find this particular tidbit of info. So, I elected to start this thread so that the info would be more available. ;)

So what criteria qualifies you for a phone exchange? The screen portion of the phone is a little bit loose for me. I can lift up the side with the volume buttons a little bit. I don't like how that feels, but I figured it was normal.

My letter "O" key is also mushy compared to the rest of my keys.

My capacitive buttons are also a bit unresponsive at times, but I've actually gotten used to that.

Just wonder if I can walk in and have them give me a new Epic.

Do you keep your current SD card? Mine is filled with a lot of useful stuff I'd rather not lose.

I'm on my third. The first had a bad mic, the second, gps issues. The third is working just fine.

Having to swap out a few phones is nothing new though, I've had to do it with almost every new phone I've ever owned.

If I decide to keep this phone, I may try and get another exchange (on my 2nd Epic now), as my slider seems a little loose, as well as the Menu button often times is non-responsive.

The 1st Epic I had, I couldn't get above 200 on the DL, and UL was a real joke - most of the time a -0! This 2nd Epic is doing MUCH better on the DL, and UL is capped at 150 or lower - like most of us are experiencing (on 3G).

I called my Sprint store and they said my issues are normal and not enough to exchange a phone...........

It wouldn't surprise me if you got a different answer calling around different Sprint stores...or even visiting a different store (presumably you can go into any Sprint store with an issue and not just the one you bought from?)

Is that so? I figured I could only exchange my phone at the Sprint store I bought it from.

What all do you need to take them? The phone + box + everything in it? Receipt? Or just the phone?

When I took mine back, I took everything - and I didn't need to. Just the phone and receipt is all you should need.

Try going to a Sprint store that also has tech support within its store, as the 1st store I took it to was a retail Sprint store, and they know nothing about technical issues or design. And they wouldn't exchange it either. So I went to another Sprint store that had techs onsite, and they ordered me another one.

*On a side note; I really miss the days of where the customer is ALWAYS right! Now days, it's like pulling teeth with companies to get them to even listen to you about an issue.

I'm not 100% sure but most retail companies allow you to return goods to any of their stores. Might be different with a cell phone company but certainly worth a try. Call around a few of your more local stores to see what they say. You could also get a different response from one person to the next in each store. Always ask to speak to the manager too....and be pretty loud about the issues if you're in the store, LOL. Especially if other customers are checking out the Epic! ;)

You should probably back up everything on your memory card just in case they want you to exchange that as well...but I'd imagine they'd let you keep it and would take the one in the new box.

You know, I think companies need to make a product right the first time. We deserve to get something in perfect condition in exchange for our money.

With that said, reading these forums, and seeing people exchange their phones 3-4-5 times? What really? You think companies will allow this to continue for ever? If people continue to do so many exchanges, expect companies to limit exchanges to 1 with an exchange fee. When the system is abused, it ends up back firing on all consumers. Case in point, almost every retail store now charges restocking fee's on returns. I remember the good old days of 30day returns with no restocking fees, but then again, when people abuse the system, I guess a company needs to protect itself.

I personally don't want to see cell phone carriers changing their return/exchange to something more strict than it is now, but trust me, they will if the 3-5 exchanges continue.

Or they could release quality products.

I don't think returning defective phones is abusing the system. In fact, I'd say the consumer is the one being abused. You shouldn't have to keep running around wasting your time and gas trying to find a working phone, that you paid almost $400 for.

Like I said "You know, I think companies need to make a product right the first time. We deserve to get something in perfect condition in exchange for our money."

With that said, some people are way too picky. They exchange a phone 5 times, only to make themselves feel rest assured that their first 4 weren't defective. Some people are too picky.

I think it boils down to what the consumer is willing to accept vs. their expectations. Consumers have been told that [this thing] is the latest and greatest... The demo videos are stunning, and showcase all kinds of awesome capabilities... The price point suggests "quality" and "features"... Som, yeah, I expect to get what I pay for, and what I've been told to expect.

With this technology, the product design is so integrated that there's no way to 'fix' something that is baked into the design. For example, the touch sensitive 'buttons' on the Epic. If one is intermittent, you can't just fix that one button. You HAVE to replace the whole thing. That's a nightmare in the making, and not something the consumer can be held responsible for.

You're right, Big Brother will crunch some numbers, and will likely implement some sort of penalty or limitation. More likely, they'll charge more for the product(s) in the beginning, anticipating the fallout from non-conforming product. In my opinion, that's happening already...
