Hey,

I'm a apprentice IT Proffesional trying to get to grips with some basics

can anyone break down and explain the very basics how subnet mask works like, how you work out the range of ip address's say on a

255.255.255.0

and how you would work out the range of ip address's on a subnet mask of

255.255.252.0

also how do you work out if an IP address is related to a subnet mask? I've read some information regarding this online and in windows server 2003 admininstration toolkit book but still struggling to get to grips.

all help is greatly appreciated

This helped a Ton!! with a tad bit of help from a lad at work i really understand how this works now.

Thanks mate.

yeah, subnetting is a pretty basic concept, but can be REALLY useful if you understand how it really works. Most people are just used to doing a 192.168.1.x network with a 255.255.255.0 mask, and never really understand what they are doing.

Glad that helped.
