Welcome to Android Forums, stang13.

If your Eris is running flawlessly, as you say, you may want to just leave it as it is and wait until the next phone out there convinces you that you need to replace your Eris with it, such as the Droid X or Samsung Fascinate. ;)

But having a look around these Eris forums, you'll see a lot of users taking it upon themselves to upgrade their device by rooting and experimenting with different ROMs ("OSs") until they find the one that suits them.

Rooting gives you more control over the device's configuration, and has many benefits, including the ones you seem to be looking for. Please read more about that process here:

Eris - All Things Root - Android Forums

Take your time learning about it, ask questions in that forum (All Things Root).

Having 1.5 makes little difference than having 2.1 when it comes to beginning the root process.. here is the method I used:

http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/53963-guide-stock-1-5-latest-root-2-1-a.html

Many rooted Eris users will come along and post the names of their favorite ROM for your consideration. ;)

Thanks 4 the response....was. thinkin bout doin the official 2.1 update then doing the one click root......but beyond that is too much hassle...would that get me a flawless eris on 2.1 with 4 bars? If not ill prolly wait for newer phone ...on my original eris I had vol 3 2.1 leak ...liked it except for silent call bug and only 1 or 2 bars and a some other. Bugs....

Anybody who promises you "a flawless Eris on 2.1 with four bars" is taking a big chance, my friend.

There used to be an unwritten rule of thumb that stated, "good 1.5 = good 2.1," however the 2.1 OTA seemed to cause (or to highlight) various issues with many users, such as "the silent call bug" and low signal reception.

So, no, I will not state flatly that you will for sure end up with a "flawless" Eris. I will say that you will have more control over those things than with an unrooted device, and I'll also say that my 1.5 was truly flawless as it was following the 2.1 OTA as it remains so rooted. ;)

I know it makes little difference, but the signal bar issue in 2.1 is really just a software thing. The actual signal you receive won't be any different on a phone running 1.5, 2.1 or 2.2. It is really just a glitch with the meter itself. That said, I do understand the want of seeing an accurate representation of your current signal. Even rooted though, all the Sense based ROMs are going to have this issue. You won't get away from it until a vanilla ROM is loaded on your phone.

I do miss those little Android robots waving at me when the phone is powering up.:(
:D:D:D

You're not the only one. I loved that little guy. :D I wonder if anyone has that boot animation sitting on a shelf that they can offer.

The Eris on 1.5 I will always stick by my story was uba stable!!!!

It really was. I think the only real bug was the YouTube app.

Yes, it was. But the phone was too slow, so you needed root to OC. If they were able to OC 1.5 now you're talking. That being said, XTR 4.5b is the way this phone should be. Everything works and it's quick. 1.5 looks like Windows 3.1 in comparison. Stable, but antiquated.

I've never used a signal strength app, but my girlfriend and two other friends have the Eris. When I had each version of the 2.1 leak and they were on the original 1.5 I could compare signal strength between all 4 phones at one time in the same location.

Going to Settings > About Phone > Status and looking at the Signal Strength gives you the most accurate picture of your current signal. Mine is currently at -69 dBm, which displays as 4 bars out of 5. Basically the numbers are shown as negatives so a "lower" number (-50) is better than a "higher" number (-99). Technically, since they are negatives -50 is higher than -90, but saying it that way confuses some people. The OS takes these numbers and converts it to bars as a way of displaying it. In the 2.1 version of Sense there is something not quite right about how the software converts and displays that signal. It is still present on the Incredible from what I remember. Some say that it is displaying your 3G signal instead of you voice signal, but that has never been really proven. The idea came from the fact that the bars would change when sending a text or on a voice call and you could see that 3G had switched to 1 RT.

With the 4 phones that I tested using various versions of the software over time and even rooted ROMs, the Signal Strength on each phone was pretty much the same. They would all usually be + or - 2 or 3 dBm from each other. This was with the bars showing far greater variances in signal strength. The time I remember the most was when I installed the first or second 2.1 leak and was looking at 3 other phones running 1.5. My bars were almost non-existent while everyone else had 3 or 4, be we were all right at about -70 dBm.

It is on the Plain Jane 2.1 Rom:D

That would mean going back to a Sense Rom, which I am not willing to do right now.

After switching to Nonsensikal Black I don't know if I can ever go back. I loved Sense so much and really enjoyed using it, but this ROM is so close to perfect for me that I don't even know if I could buy another phone with Sense on it now. My next phone may have to be a vanilla. Nonsensikal Black with LauncherPro Plus is just too perfect for me.

Thanks, I may have to change my boot animation now. I didn't even remember that thread.

LOL - this thread is just too humorous for an old-timer like me.
First we have Frisco touting the joys of rooting away from v1.5. Frisco, from whom we heard the scream "NOOOOOOOOO" when the OTA to 2.1 arrived on his phone.
Now here's OTD saying "I may not ever go back to Sense" when's she's loved Sense from day 1.
The times, they are a-changin' :)

Trust me, I'm as shocked to say it as anyone else could be to hear it. I bought the Eris because of Sense and I still think it offers some really nice features. I miss the music player and footprints :(, but there are replacements out there for just about everything. LP even offers the widgets that I was going to miss from Sense and unlike HTC the dev updates that constantly.
