I'm not going to beat you up, but your post is vague, you didn't give specifics of exactly what you're referring to.

Second, I'm running Android ver 2.1 Eclair on my Captivate and find it reasonably fast, fun, stable, and it gets the job done quite nicely.

I'm as much of an early adopted as most, yet I also believe in optimizing what I have and enjoying it. I've had my Captivate since launch day, July 18th, I've spent some time learning Android and optimizing this phone for my needs and I'm very happy with it.

Well we pretty much all know that there's a software update coming out; that's what I'm referring to. The reason it sounds vague is because the "official" news on the update is vague.

We don't know if the update is just a GPS fix or if it includes a fix for the lag issues. We also don't know if the update is a Froyo build that includes the two fixes I just mentioned. We don't know if it's OTA or if there really is going to be a Kies update in the US.

All we really know is that some software update was scheduled to be released within the next 16 days. We haven't heard anything in a month, so who knows if they're still on track.

I'm happy with the phone too... when it works as it should. The lag is annoying and I haven't even turned my GPS on in the last few weeks because it's so frustrating to try to use.

This means the process of delivering an update will begin soon. The bad thing would be if Samsung never delivered an update but that seems not to be the case. Give it time, I rather they get it right then give us something that makes the phone totally suck.

One thing I've noticed in this forum, is that people are quick to assume.

Unless we are told otherwise (by Samsung) we can't relate any news about the I9000 to the Captivate. Also, the referenced article states that the news is a rumor. We definitely shouldn't take a rumor about another phone and apply it to our own.

I'm certain that we will eventually get Froyo, but wish we would get news specific to the Captivate.

I have to agree. I know we will get the GPS fix soon, and Froyo probably by the end of the year.

The issue for me anyway is that Samsung has been quiet about it for a few weeks now and when they did talk they were a bit vague. It would be nice to have more information about the issue, especially since it is now officially half way thru the month of September. I dont believe they even officially anounced that the U.S. Galaxy S line would even be getting Froyo. (But I could be wrong)

Samsung really could have done some damage to Apple with this phone if they played their cards right. Before the Captivate, AT&T really had NOTHING to compete with the iPhone. Then the Captivate came out and it was in supply. People were frustrated about waiting weeks and even over a month to get an Iphone. So here is this nice, sexy, shinny new Captivate they could take home right away! But alas it was fraught with bugs and bad GPS. Pretty much the reason I got the Captivate was because I couldnt get an iPhone for over a month! So i grabbed one. I had a TON of trouble with the first one, as MANY people here did too. I took it back. When I did, the lady at Best Buy told me that OVER 75% of the first batch of Captivates they sold had been returned! They even had a few iPhones in when I was doing the return. I really fought the urge to exchange for one, but I got another Captivate instead, and happy I did.

BUT; how many iPhone converts did Samsung miss out on because these issues? If I did a search on this forum alone I could find dozens. If Samsung had put a bit more into their testing and developing they probably could have easilly doubled the amount of iPhone converts on the simple fact that they could offer a great, fully functional alternative to the iPhone community to dangle in front of their noses as they stood in line to order their iPhones.

You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar.

Losing customers was a big loss for Samsung, as you all have pointed out, they could have made some in roads on launch, but the bugs were just too many for most. So Samsung lost sales to people waiting for an iPhone. Plus, how many people abandoned their Samsung for another phone simply beause of the bugs and failure of Samsung to communicate to the masses. The big thing, as many have pointed out, is that we are now half way through Sept and nothing has been said. Samsung has their lips sealed, which is a mistake in my opinion. The big question, is how many more are they going to lose if they do not keep their promise on Bug fixes in Sept and the community rolls into Oct with nothing more than they have now. I believe that will be the nail that does it, so I hope they keep their promises and speak more often to the community..

Just my 2 cents............

When I bought my Captivate, I was so pleased with Android (opposed to iOS) that I didn't mind the bugs. After a couple of weeks, I decided to hold on to the phone for a couple of reasons:
1. The hardware is second-to-none
2. Galaxy S is world wide, surely they won't screw this up with bad software
3. No other high-end Androids on at&t

I'll be disappointed if I'm stuck with a buggy phone so let's hope these issues are fixed. I'll patiently wait for Froyo if I have a working Eclair. Maybe Samsung should send some spies to HTC - it looks like they know what they're doing.

The lack of news isn't all Samsung's fault. Its not like they can just push out a fix for the Captivate when they feel like it. The fix needs to go through AT&T. I'm sure AT&T is doing a bunch of testing on any Captivate related updates because if something goes bad with it then its AT&T that will get the support headache, not Samsung.

So between the two of them we aren't going to hear a damn thing. We're lucky we get twitter updates from Samsung.

Totally unacceptable for either company to treat customers this way. I almost went for an Evo but was not sold on the HTC brand and had a bad experience with Sprint in the past. Not that AT&T is any better but at least I've had more luck with them.

As for Samsung, even if they update the phone by the end of the month, this will probably be my last one. I'm not into the wait in the dark approach, doesn't take much to say we are doing X and the plan to push out the fix is Y after working with our vendors.

Two weeks to go, here's hoping they deliver at least GPS and Lag fixes so I can enjoy my phone a bit more.

I disagree. Samsung hasn't given us any news since the "we are testing software to optimize GPS" tweet over a month ago.

I called TMobile to reactivate my old account and move back to the Nokia.

It will be enough to get me through the next three or six months until more proven tech is released. Perhaps all of my desires will be released by someone else and not serviced by AT&T. Dual GSM-CDMA with quad band, unlimited text and data for $60 a month, front facing camera, rear cam with flash and hard shutter button, working GPS and Google Nav, made by HTC?

I'm really going to miss al of the knee-jerk, unreaslistic, hystrionic fanboyism of this forum, however. :-/

Good riddance! Burn in hell!

:D

Hahaha, totally understandable. BTW, the new Desire HD looks like a pretty wicked device, not sure who's getting it stateside, but keep an eye out! Honestly, I'm pretty much like skinien, in that I love the OS and device but the issues are frustrating and I *hope* keeping it past the 30 days won't come back to bite me in my shiny metal ass.

Good luck! If you change your mind, we'll still be here ... waiting on 2.2 ... and waiting .... and waiting ...

Oh, don't get me wrong, this has been a total fiasco on Samsung's part. The only way their US galaxy s product launch would have been worse is if their was some major defect with their antenna design where you totally lost signal if you held the phone in your left hand. :)

Even as bad as Apple's communication was after the iPhone 4 launch (it's not a problem, there is no problem, just hold it a different way, ahh screw it, have a bumper, sorry) its still way better than the wall of silence that has come from AT&T and Samsung.
