I got my SLCD Desire 2 days ago, and so far the battery sucks, I have not even managet to get a day out of it, standby is not so bad but if I decide to play a 2d game like robo tower defence then the battery will plumet, today I charged the phone to 100% overnight, unplugged at 8AM, did not even touch it till 1PM, its now 5:45 and I have played some 2d games, browsed the internet with wifi and made about 15mins of phone calls and its on 22%

how can I make that last till like 11PM?

any tips guys?

Once the novelty wears off, it will last longer. Mine was the same for the first few days, I was hammering everything and charging at teatime. I still have 85% left today.

You can improve it though by changing screen brightness, make sure wifi is off when you go out (otherwise it is always searching), change email notifications etc to manual or hourly.

Some of the other guys will have lots of other tips and will probably link you to an existing thread

Definitely bear with with it - as the others have said, it does improve. When I first got mine I was fiddling with all the settings trying to make it last and got about 5 hours!! Now I've upgraded to Froyo 2.2 and sorted what I need it'll happily run for a couple of days of average use. About the same as I was getting from my iPhone 3G.

Thanks for the tips guys, right now the phone if not very pratical for me as I like to sit there for a good hour or so and play games or browse the net, and you can watch it go down, I have set the brightness to 15%, and set most things to manual update such as weather and calendar, now going to look into juice defender and spare parts to see how they are, thanks.

Sorry just another question, so after a while does your battery get better over time or does your usage just drop, reason I ask is even with wifi, bluetooth and GPS off its still not very good, tbh I dont really need it to even last two days, im happy if I can pick it up at 8:30 AM and use it all day for light browsing and light gaming and put it back on charge at about 11:30, I dont want to have to take my charger to school with me lol.

Another reason why we should have one big ol battery MEGA thread.....

Regarding the brightness thing......You will NOT see a significant improvement by reducing the brightness. I have tested it out thoroughly and the gain is minimal at best! Just set it to auto and forget about it. IF you have the brightness at full then you will eat up battery! Having it set to auto simply adjusts it for the amount of light coming in through the sensor allowing you to view the screen in whatever conditions!

As I always say to folks getting these phones now, IF you run it as it came to you the battery will last a day and very little more. What you need to do is remove all the crapware that comes pre-installed. It might look good, but it is really not required! I mean, unless you need to know the weather for the next few days WHY would you have it constantly updating? IF you DONT have stocks, then why do you need to constantly update the stock market? DO you really need your emails checked every five minutes? DO you really need to have an always on wifi/data connection?

Most people DONT and when you figure this out you see your battery life increase from 1 and a bit days to 3 days between charges!

Design your phone around you and NOT around what others want you to be like!

Hi, i've got an unrooted Desire with Froyo. Lately my battery has started getting worse! It was never great but i generally got 24-36 hours out of it. Now i'm lucky if i get 16 hours out of it.

I do have a few apps that sync regularly but i think my battery may have a fault.

When i charge my battery to 100%, after about 10-15 min it drops to 90% without hardly touching it!

Any ideas guys? Do i ned a new battery, or is there something i can maybe change with the setting? Any help would greatly appreceiated.

Thanks for the info, but if i was to change my battery, i would probably just get another stock one. There seems to be enough people who can get reasonably good life out of it.

I've been reading about battery calibration, i think that the OS may think its fully charged when it's not.

If i figure it out, i'll post here.

Ignore the angry face at the top, not intended :)

Here is a little tip for anyone who gets this after charging to 100%. The drop off is caused by the battery NOT being correctly synced. SO, after charging to 100% simply remove from the charger for about 5 mins or so, THEN put it back on charge. IF the battery is incorrectly setup it should take a wee while to charge to 100% again.....IF it charges back to 100% quickly then you may have a dodgy battery or vampire app on your phone!

After doing this it should charge to 100% and stay ther when the phone is not being used. BUT, as a matter of course, please check that you DONT have a vampire app as the majority of cases I have come across are down to this

What is a vampire app?

An app that just sucks the life out of the battery for NO reason. They are usually down to bad coding practices, but they can also be done purposely to keep access to data/internet as well!

A good example of a vampire app would be the HTC weather app. It is badly coded as it does not need to sync as often as it does. It also keeps running in the background when it is NOT necessary! As I have said many times, who actually needs to know what the weather is going to be like in half an hours time? Look out the window

Another example would be the way some widgets are coded. Be careful of using widgets, especially IF you get poor battery life. You might find that it is a widget that is causing it.

Unfortunately, the way this phone is marketed means that HTC as well as some of the carriers are loading it up with bloatware and crapware. Most of it is simply NOT needed. Every single Android phone user should uninstall most of the rubbish BEFORE doing anything else with their phone. Then start from scratch and CREATE the smartphone that is suited to the individual and NOT the carrier or maker!

Now had the phone 3 days, and still suprised how much the battery sucks tbh, I was expecting it to last much longer, I mean with everything set to off like wifi ect it will kinda long in standby, but the second you start doing something like playing a 2D game you can pratically watch the battery fall, I was hoping it would last at least 16 hours with medium/heavy use but I guess I will wait and see what its like in a few weeks, as far as using it less I have been leaving my phone at home from abiut 8 till 4 when im at school and still finding I dont get anywhere near 11 or 12PM.

No, it's because the phone charges to 100%, then the charger cuts out and the battery discharges to 90%, then when it hits 90% it starts charging again. If you unplug it substantially after it finishes charging, but before it hits the 90% mark, the battery will be slightly discharged. This is normal, and covered in at least one of the threads linked to above.

Have you read through the threads above and taken note of all the tips? The battery doesn't suck if you use it properly. ;)

1) Don't install any task killing apps. Anyone who tells you otherwise simply does not know what they are talking about.
2) Avoid any "charge it for an hour, unplug for 10 mins, charge for an hour" nonsense. These battery "fixes" are superstitious twaddle.
3) Take charge of your apps and widgets. Sync manually. Removed battery hogging widgets. Turn off 3G and wi-fi when you don't need them.
4) Don't use live wallpapers and turn down the screen brightness.
5) Monitor your usage using *#*#4636#*#* and identify any apps that may be sapping power.

All I was suggesting was to all who have this issue is to stick the phone back on charge AFTER the green light comes on as it is NOT fully charged! I am fully aware of the mechanics of li-ion batteries but thanks anyway ;)

It might be "NORMAL" for these phones but it is still a problem that most people will be blissfully unaware of.

And???? IF you dispute the findings then all I will say is TRY IT and see for yourself.....I have and that is why I speak from MY OWN experience and NOT because it sounds right therefore it MUST be right

Why is it that everyone has a different opinion?

1) Yet task killing is needed sometimes for "stuck apps" which drain battery life - I now use a program that monitors memory usage and lets me kill apps that should have shut down after I quit them. Saying there's no need is going too far. Saying you don't need to constantly use it, is more accurate.

2) This is one where other people have said it works and no-one seems to agree on this. I haven't tested it so I don't know but charging batteries is not an exact science because it's a chemical reaction after all.

3) This one I partially disagree with. Manual syncing defeats the point of a phone. If I only discover I received an urgent email after an hour or more, it would be too late. Sure, for people who don't read emails on their phone, it's not a big deal. But syncing of news, facebook, etc. can be a nuisance when turned off because it takes 10-20 secs to manually sync so a quick look would turn into a lengthy look.

Another thing: the problem with disabling 3G and Wi-fi, is that people all too often forget to turn them back on which can have painful results (like blasting through your data package or crossing it which would result in a lengthy bill).

Generally, the best advice I can give is to find a way of working that requires as little fiddling and adjusting as possible. That means leaving everything on if you might need it. 3G and Wi-fi both on won't drain the battery that much at all. Unless you know you'll spend a few days at a place with Wi-Fi, go ahead and leave 3G on but when on the move, its beyond ridiculous to keep switching stuff on and off. It's not a pleasant way of working either. The less "attention" your phone needs, the better.

4) Live wallpaper only drains the battery when it's visible i.e. when not in an app or when the phone is in standby mood I was told. how often do you leave your phone on the front page? Turning it off might make a minute difference but the result would be losing a cool and attractive wallpaper. Reminds me of people saying to turn off Aero in Vista for the tiny performance boost - is it really worth it?

Screen brightness is something that generally won't make that big a difference anymore. Again, you're sacrificing the attractive clarity and colourfulness of your phone for maybe a few % of power saved. If I were to watch a movie with brightness turned lower, it would harm the enjoyment.

-----------------------------------------

In the end, most of these measures are a big hassle compared to the result. It's way easier to just get another battery and replace it if you really fall without power.

Me? I watched a 2 hour HD movie yesterday, spent an hour surfing, 5 minutes calling, installing apps, using Dropbox extensively, using my phone as shopping list, an hour of listening to music, an hour surfing at the very least ... and I had 50+% left. This was from 11am till 11pm (I leave it plugged in at home when I don't need it). This is WITHOUT any of the measures above. Syncing is left on, weather is left on, Wifi and 3G is left on, etc.

Did you plug it in at all during the 12 hour shift?
