which manufacturer has the best track record for updates?

I'm an adroid newb.. just wanted to get it out there....

First thing i've noticed now is this worrying trend of us consumers being dependent on the good graces of the manufacturers depending on them for OS upgrades and we all know they never really care or are motivated with providing something for free...

It seems like the same problem as the Laptop PC market has with them being slow releasing new drivers making our choices of which Linux or windows one wants to install limited and the negative performance impact that follows. My having to install drivers in compatibility mode on my HTC SHIFT to be able to run win7 on it which is waaay better on such a slow machine rather than the originally bundled vista.

SO, to the point. What android smartphone builder are generally considered the best and fastest, most reliable at releasing these new updates Froyo and future versions.

If i wanted to buy a real top-of-the-line model which would make the best investment, like will any of them get android 3 updates when it becomes available?

I gotta tell you i was real excited about it up until the ruined everything by making it an iphone... i want to be able to swap batteries, insert memory card and multitask, that's just how i roll...

So what do you think of HTC? they've always been my favorite.... but I would like one with keyboard...

My advise is to follow the HTC press release tomorrow. They are revealing at least one new smartphone. I don't recognize your location, but if your in the States, the T-Mobile G2. It's made by HTC. It's only 800mhz, but benchmarks put it up there with any other top of the line phone out there. Has a full keyboard, as well as vanilla UI. Not sure how new you are, but basically any vanilly ui will get updates before phones with manufacturer bloatware crap.

I've always liked HTC myself, and sadly they really aren't putting out as many killer phones with keyboards as they used to, which has made me go Samsung.

WinMo7.. no thanks. Your talking to someone who was a HUGE winmo Legacy supporter as well.

if i may ask, what are your reasons against win phone 7? OH and regarding the samsungs with android what is a good model with keyboard? I found one that cost friggin' 600€ with a 16gb memory, ought to be pretty neat for that price...

Also, what about these Motorola's? they seem pretty decent but i remain skeptical towards motorola, never liked their products in the past.

I was using winmo for the last 7 years but they never really developed...

Most phones end-of-life about 1 year after the manufacturer starts making them. That seems to be the average anyway. The high end mobile market is maturing so stupidly fast that a high end phone a year ago is now the low end.

I sort of wish mobiles were more like normal PCs. You can push them to the latest OS as long as the hardware can handle it. I'm running Windows 7 on an old Dell with 1 GB of RAM currently with not too much effort. I upgraded the RAM and GPU (for Aero and playing Steam games) along with a DVD drive so I could actually install it, but that's about it.

Not me, In fact i wish for the opposite, and by that i mean an increase in MEANINGFUL new hardware / software... not just micro releases but proper innovative and productive. not just half-assed jobs in hopes of conning you into buying YET again a new phone.
