Root Best Rom and Best Kernel

Hey, I am getting my Evo tomorrow i think it will be 2.2. So does anyone know how to root it with everything unlocked? Also, what is the best rom and kernel based on speed and battery. Also, if you suggest a kernel and a rom can you tell me exactly how to install it because this will be my first android phone and i dont know wat nadroid and other stuff means. thanks

Read the stickies, the best ROM and Kernel will be the one of your choice. All ROM-Kenel combinations work different with each phone even tho the hardware is the same.

It is a matter of trying different roms and figuring out what you like and dont like. Everyone likes different things. Some like sense, some dont. Best advice i got was to try as many as you are willing, gets to be a little tedious but once you find what you like, you will be set!

well, i only want to install something once because i don't want to brick my phone. so can you guys give me like the top 3 roms and kernels and pros and cons of each?

So long as you make a nandroid of a stable ROM you should be fine, it's actually pretty difficult to brick it, all be it possible. I would suggest holding off of flashing kernels until you have a grasp of what they do. Every ROM comes with it's own kernel. Regardless there are a ton of threads about the best ROMs and Kernels and everyone will have a different opinion depending on what it is they want out of their device.

That said, top 3 ROM's that seem to come up in threads the most are Fresh, Baked Snacks and CM6. All have their pro's and con's. You will have to decide for yourself which is best.

I can only tell you from my experience. I liked fresh, it was a nice layout and stable, pretty much the same with backed snack, I didnt care for CM6 because i dont really like the ADW launcher. CM6 doesnt have 4G, HDMI, and something else not working in it, i forget what it is at the moment. Really though, it's all about preference.

You can always use launcher pro,and about the missing features what can I say,if you want to have the cream of the crop you gotta give a little. No ROM out there compares to CM6.

FM tuner is that other thing that doesn't work.

Hey, I'm getting my driver license tomorrow, I think I'll be able to find the DMV. So does anyone know how to pass the exam? Also, what is the best car based on speed and mileage? Also, if you suggest a car can you tell me exactly how to drive it because this will be my first car and I don't know what "steering wheel" and "pedals" and other stuff means.

OP:

Here's just a quick reference (in my opinion)

CM6 - Will be the fastest of any custom rom, especially if you continue and install a snap kernel.
BUT - No 4g, HDMI, FM Radio as mentioned. Also you will lose Sense, and may have many issues arise when trying to use features of the phone. For instance, Wireless Tethering can give problems. CM6 is a GREAT rom, but I would say it's the most high maintenance as there will likely always be something going on strange that needs to be handled or corrected.

Fresh 3.2.0.2 - Great Rom. It's got a lot of the additional Sprint bloatware removed. I used Fresh as my primary rom for quite some time, on the Evo and my Hero.
BUT - I can tell you it won't be the snappiest rom, and there's really not much customization going on. It's a great rom if you just want to drop some bloatware and run a custom rom, very little maintenance ever required.

Caulk's Evio series 1.2 - This is a great rom as well. Has most the bloatware still in place, but the battery life won't suffer and you can actually remove sense and the bloatware through ADB with this rom. Everything works as it should after installing the update patches included with the Rom thread.

My history is Fresh (3 months) CM6 (1.5 months) Evio (2 weeks). I have to say I miss the barebones feel and performance of CM6, but no 4g turned out to be a dissappoinment (though I rarely even use it) and I also had lots of problems with tethering no matter how much I messed with it.

I like Evio and plan to stick with it for a while. Everything just works, the phone is still performing very well and I didn't have to make any sacrifices.

Now, You make the decision.

****And I don't want to hear anyone bashing back at me about my opinions... I offered them to answer the OP, not for your personal judgement****

This is my favorite rom. Baked Snack 1.7 on my Evo non-overclocked. I've tried so many roms but I kept going back to Baked. The video got cut off before i started Qaudrant but it got 1133. Even though it's not OC'd and doesn't score high in Quadrant its still so smooth. It's almost as smooth as the Epic I returned.

Thanks for the info. I successfully rooted EVO4G from 2.2 to back to 2.1, and then 2.2 which is rooted now.

I am reading a lot, but still not quite sure on how to try different ROM? One ROM I downloaded was like more then Gig in size compare to the one I rooted with was only 180 Mb zip in the size. Where can I find good documentation on how to try various ROM by copying the zip file on your SD Card, removing the old one, and booting in recover, install the zip file, and re-install the recovery on top of the new ROM. Did I miss something?

xda developers, or the other one is sdx developers too I think...xda is where I got all of my ROMS. I have the stock 2.2 from first root, Evio, and now I am going to try Baked Snack after that video!!!

Art,

Do you mind summarizing the few steps of how to flash ROM's in your EVO since you have recently rooted. I have rooted my evo which came with 2.2 by following process on xda which essentially changes to 2.1, and then root, and then upgrades it to stock 2.2.

This is your best friend: HTC EVO helpful/popular threads (Look here First!) - xda-developers

Anyway, I recommend visiting the link I gave you. But to summarize, its like this.

After you have root, and FULL NAND unlock, you download the zip file of a rom you want.
You put this zip file (leave it zipped) on the main category of your SD card (not in any folder).
Then turn the phone off.
Hold Vol. Down and Power button until phone screen comes to white screen with options menu.
Scroll down to Recovery and hit power to select.

Once phone is running in recovery (Black screen, green writing) then first

Make a nandroid backup. Option is under Backup/Restore.

After that, select Update ....
In that menu select the zip file for the rom. Then let it install, reboot and Done.

It's likely any rom you choose will also require you update a radio, wipe the device, possibly install additional update fixes.

If anything ever goes wrong do this:

Pull out the battery. Put it back in. Boot into recovery (vol down and power) and restore the Nandroid backup you made prior to starting.
