What makes Juice Defender better than manually turning on 3G/wifi when needed? I've played with Juice Defender and found I get better battery life by controlling it all myself.

Also worth noting, of course, that I do NOT use any push emails or anything like that.

The fact that it's not manual . That may sound flippant, but honestly, if a piece of software will do it for me, so I don't even have to think about it, I'm all for it, even if I could do it a little bit better manually. Juice Defender seems to work pretty well - I've definitely noticed an increase in battery life, and it hasn't changed my interaction with the phone at all.

I'm not sure. I find it works for me. But I'm not a manual type guy I need something to do it for me and this seems to do enough to make a difference for me at least.

I don't understand your question. J/D can be run in automatic mode (load and do nothing on my part) Or it can be run in a custom mode where you can select it to save even more power but you could have some adverse effects on some 3rd party apps. if you shut to many things off.

You can MANUALLY control the 3g data with Juice defender also FYI. Download it again and look for the widget called "toggle mobile data". I didnt see this widget on my first time trying this app either and it snuck up on me lol.

It works well too. It has 3 options, one for always on data, one for juice defender to control the mobile data and the last option allows you to turn off 3g even with your screen on. Its excellent and I have it manually off as I type (I'm at work).

I left my phone off the charger over night and am at 10 and a half hours since last charge. battery is at 76%

Its definitely up'd my battery life; I was gettin 7-8 hrs before installing it; the other day I get 18hrs & its been @least 12hrs that I get from it; I hav 7 other emails outside of my 3 gmail accts comin to the phone so the manual stuff isn't for me... J.D. is the man-ual

Juice defender is great! I had it on my EVO and it was great.
On the Epic, I ran it for a bit, but just didn't see any good results.

The best results I got was using switch pro widget and just turning off data connection. I don't mind manually doing it. Ultimate juice is great too I had that also.

I'm so glad to hear first hand experience with J/D, running as-is. I didn't want to have to mess with manually turning things on/off, other than the obvious, and changing my usage of the device. I installed it a couple days ago but then forgot to toggle the airplane mode after a reboot. Going to keep an eye out for that now. Crossing fingers for similar result as you.

BTW, I also downloaded the companion battery widget with Quick Settings. Nice. I will go give the J/D app 5 stars soon as I see improvements.

I agree, Juice Defender was useless for me. I like having control myself, plus I have already optimized my phone manually for max battery life, juice defender did not add any additional benefit.

Hmmm counter productive? Just how much can you get done with a dead battery? That is the flip side of this coin.

However, you'll be missing email, notifications, and calls if you have it killing everything like it seems most of these people do. What good is your phone doing if it can't communicate?

My Evo, with a stock 2.2 rom, will get on average 16 hours a day with what I consider moderate use. About 9 hours since it's unplugged are spent running music (sd and mostly streaming) while I make plenty of text messages and a few calls through the day. Occasionally, I'll have to take anywhere from 1-6 pictures and email them out, but that never really seems to have any major impact on my phone.

Of course, here's my catch 22: I run set cpu and it throttles back my cpu to 426mhz when the screen's off. Also, when my battery hits 20%, the max cpu clock is set down to just above what it is with the screen off, 625mhz. This, along with an awesome kernel, let me use my phone all day on 3g, wifi, and leave gps on without worry. One thing to note about the gps system difference on the Evo...it never pulls your location using full on gps unless something like google maps/nav requests it. Is it the same on the Epic? I remember I've have to turn it off on my old Moment when I was done with it because it'd constantly try to lock onto my location.

I have JuiceDefender and I like it a lot....I use my phone in spurts so it's nice to have a program that automatically turns off 3g when my screen goes off. Also, if you haven't used it, you should know that it also allows the 3g to come on (scheduler) for 1/3mins every 15 mins, and there are other settings as well. So, auto-sync still works, just not technically right away...you would get your e-mails 15 minutes late as the worst case scenario. Of course, if you're actively using your phone (the screen is on), 3g will also be on and auto-sync will work regularly.

So, really, the main benefit I see from this phone is that it turns 3g off when the screen is off (when I'm not using it), but it still allows auto-sync, just not instantaneous auto-sync.
