Droid Vs. Android dumb irritation

So maybe its just me, but I get so annoyed people saying they have a Droid when they don't. For example, someone asks me what's new. I tell them I got the new Droid X, then they proceed to tell me they have a droid too. So naturally I ask, "Oh cool, which one? D1, D2, or DX?" Then they respond with something like "The Evo"
My response usually is, that's not a droid, and they argue it is. I clarify that their phone is an android phone and not a Droid. Then they try to argue it is a Droid. I simply put it this way to them.......There are PC's out there, all have windows, but each are different. Like an HP Pavillion or Sony Viao, etc. But just because a sony has windows, doesnt make it an HP.
Maybe I am crazy or like the fact I have a droid so much, that when someone says they have one and actually don't, I get irritated........Just seeing if anyone else feels the same

Droid is the term the vast majority of people are going to stick with to describe Android phones and there's nothing anyone can do to change that so it's best to just accept it as the new slang for referring to an Android phone and not be offended by it.

I know, I guees i just like the fact I own an actual Droid and feel the privilege of saying Droid because of it. I know everyone will say they have a droid phone, but BLAH, just irritates me for some reason. I'll get over it for sure

I guess I don't identify with my electronics so much, or put so much importance on a brand name.

You do know that Verizon branded the HTC Incredible as the Droid Incredible, right? So Motorola isn't the only company who got the branding?

Verizon did an amazing job with pushing the Droid line
Its gonna end up being like other products such as "Band-Aid"(adhesive bandages), or any other thing that uses a name brand in place of the actual product.
Get used to it, I don't even correct people anymore

I dont really see a reason to differentiate the "Droid Line" from other android phones. If the Droid line of phones had a specific feature that separated them then I might agree but they dont. The Droid Lineup currently consists of 4 phones running 3 different variations of android. You have the Droid running plain android. The Droid Incredible running Sense and then the DX and D2 running motoblur or ninja blur or whatever motorola calls it. There are also 2 different manufacturers and probably will be more down the road.

The biggest thing these phones have in common is that they are or at least were when released very high spec android phones.

Android is android imo. Im not going to get upset if my friend that just bought a facinate tells me he has a droid. Its another person with an android phone which mean more market share which will drive in more apps and more developers.

Bobcat - as in the skid steer piece of equipment
ADT Alarms - as in any low quality home security system with overpriced monitoring service

If you ask me it was great marketing by verizon to use the name droid for these, at the time of their release, high end spec-ed android phones. Now, someone walks into say t-mobile and tells the sales rep "I want to look at a droid phone" a sales rep who isnt all to smart (we all know they are there... I've gone in their knowing more then the sales rep on a phone more often then I can count) might say "Oh we dont sell the droid phones" welp, there goes a sale! Using the name "droid" on a phone that runs "android" was a brilliant idea on verizons marketing part if you ask me

+1 !!!! Droid is a Droid. And Evo is an Evo. Both are Android phones, but Droid is NOT an Evo. And vice-versa.
It just recalled my memories.....the other day i asked my (blonde - no offense ) friend, what car did you buy yesterday? She said; a red one!!

I think you should stop worrying about what others think is a droid or not, because who really cares? It is a meaningless label designed purely for marketing and lining the pockets of executives, and George Lucas. You shouldn't take it so personally because you pretty much came off like a snobby douche bag iphone user, not that you are. I'm just sayin, there are more important things.

Then again, I don't get emotionally attached to electronic devices, so maybe I just don't get it.

Android was a company the Google bought and brought to market as their mobile OS.

Droid was trademarked by George Lucas and licensed by Verizon to use for their Android phone lineup.

Verizon licensed the right to the Droid name from Lucas Films when they launched their first Android OS phone, the original Motorola Droid. They continue to use it for their entire Android OS line of phones.

When asked, I tell people I have the Droid X, because if I just say X, I get a quizzical look. Other (non Verizon) people calling their phones Droids is merely shorthand, lazy, or quick of them. Doesn't bother me. I'm just happy to see other people enjoying the Android operating system, hopefully as much as I do!

BTW....None of us own Droids! Unless you've got an R2 unit for your mech droid needs. Wouldn't that be sweet!

I would rather get in the debate about Coke. I am sorry if I walk in some where and order a Coke (not a soda or pop). When I visit my parents in the south and go in somewhere to order a soda and they look at me funny and I have to say Coke and then they ask what kind that drives me nuts.

As for a phone, not a big deal and as others have said, great job by Verizon on the marketing.

My mom was recently looking for her first smartphone, and my step-dad was saying they were confused on the difference between the Droid phones and the Android software, and what the difference was. I really think Verizon calling all it's Android handsets Droid *whatever* is more confusing than helpful to people looking for a new phone.

I would rather get in the debate about Coke. I am sorry if I walk in some where and order a Coke (not a soda or pop). When I visit my parents in the south and go in somewhere to order a soda and they look at me funny and I have to say Coke and then they ask what kind that drives me nuts.

I live in Florida have been to Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina and when I order Coke they bring a Coke unless they don't have it then they ask if Pepsi is ok. I've never heard anyone here in the south refer to all sodas as Coke.

Exactly. Down here everything is by its own name. I havent heard anyone use a generic term for any soda.

However, my aunt is from Michigan and one time she offered me a "pop". I thought she was gonna hit me!
