Bye Bye Captivate/Galaxy S (Back to Iphone 4- sigh)

Got rid of this giant turd well within the return period. Some ways loved it dearly; but in other ways despised it beyond all comprehension. I was an Android dude for all of 3 days.

Here's what I wrote on Facebook today:

Switched back to Iphone (Iphone 4 upgraded) from the Samsung Captivate/Galaxy. The Samsung/Android system was pretty danged neat, but too buggy (not quite ready for prime time), and came with un-deletable bloatware from AT&T on it - that alone was a deal-breaker for me, since the bloatware was recurring-monthly-fee-use-basis only, AND un-deletable.
Let's see here .... Useless pay-for apps (not just "pay-for", but "pay-EVERY-month-for", over and over), which duplicate several free ones per bloatware app, and you can't get them off your phone to save your life - BAD combination.... "Hey AT&T: 1999 desktops called, and they want their proprietary bloatware that made everyone hate Compaq and HP back!"

Before anyone starts in - I'm not nearly knowledgeable/advanced enough, NOR do I have the time, to start rooting.

Would switch to Sprint, but evidently the Epic 4 has the same type of bloatware crap on it...... At least the undeletable stuff on Iphone is free & useful. I'll stick with them for now, thanks.

Someday the Android phones and carriers will have enough competition, and be de-bugged enough, to force a no-bloatware situation, and thus make them far superior to Iphone (unless Apple seriously starts innovating at a faster rate) - but it ain't be gonna be THIS year.

I had TONS of basic phone and text malfunctions that would NEVER repeat when standing inside the AT&T store. It was ridiculous how many times basic functions would fail in the first 3 days, and then 1 hour later, it worked fine, etc.

YMMV.

Hey, maybe the Dell Streak won't have undeletable bloatware! One can dream, right!! :)

Anyone know how to contact Samsung to gripe & complain about this? I already did to AT&T.

But Samsung has a wee bit of leverage with this Galaxy that's becoming more and more popular every day - they *should* (at least at some point) have enough clout to tell at least ONE of the 4 big carriers (put it in their contract) to like it or lump it.

I.e. "You can sell/use our device if you agree not to put your stupid bloatware on it (or at least allow non-free bloatware to be deletable), and agree to take & sell only our version which has enabled: the front camera and MiFi capability."

Sprint's the most vulnerable on this, as can be seen by the fact that the Epic has the most features - they must have used a bargaining chip with Samsung though - "OK, we'll take the front-facing camera and Mifi version (both of which lead to more bandwidth usage), if you'll let us put at least some bloatware on it, and give us an exclusive on the full keyboard."

I imagine something similar to that went down. Samsung has to know that virtually NOBODY wants any pay-for, non-deletable bloatware from the carriers (or from themselves for that matter) on their phones, when android apps are readily available, better AND cheaper.

Now, on the other hand, the OTHER exclusive or "co-exclusive" (with Verizon) features that the Epic has *besides* the front-facing camera & MiFi capability happen to also be features the carriers and their users BOTH WANT, as opposed to features the carriers do NOT want (though their users do). So Sprint probably had to pay big money to Samsung to get them to agree to NOT offer the full keyboard & flash to the other guys (Verizon, ATT, & T-Mobile), but rather an exclusive (or co-exclusive) to them, in addition to agreeing to take the carrier-cost-increasing features version (MiFi & front-facing camera - due to more skype style usage).

I'm certainly not trying to argue with you or anything, you should absolutely be happy with the phone you use, but it seems that your problem is with AT&T not the Galaxy S. Calling it a giant turd doesn't seem right. I'm on T-Mo and the only monthly fee I pay is for my service. There's nothing pre-loaded that hogs resources and nothing I haven't been able to delete. I know you're on a different network, but my point is: I don't think the phone is your problem dude. But since you ditched your despised device, and Android, you probably won't be sticking around here reading this anyhow.

Thank you.....but yes & no - please don't misunderstand me... I want so much to love the Galaxy, and will almost surely be sticking around here. The Iphone has a LOT of deficiencies to it, in my book, some of which weren't addressed at all from 3 to 4, very very unfortunately.

But anyway, to clarify, I stayed with AT&T, but went BACK to the known quantity of the Iphone (well, upgraded from 3 to 4). You're mostly right -- the phone wasn't the sole cause of it being what I described - but it WAS part of it - see what I wrote:

I had TONS of basic phone and text malfunctions that would NEVER repeat when standing inside the AT&T store. It was ridiculous how many times basic functions would fail in the first 3 days, and then 1 hour later, it worked fine, etc.

and

but too buggy (not quite ready for prime time)

They want us to be their final-stage Beta monkeys - but sorry, I'd rather pass. They'll get that worked out to be sure, in time - this much we know, right? So the Galaxy S & its progeny WILL be a great superphone family, eventually - definitely.

So it most certainly was and is a turd right NOW, at least the Captivate version I had was (and I tried two different brand new ones - they swapped me out after the initial problems) -- but it only became a GIANT one through something that is no fault of Samsung's; but rather that of AT&T, unless you think it's fair to place some blame on Samsung for not "sticking to their guns" and demanding that the carriers not infest and plague their otherwise-fantastic phone with their proprietary crap via contract demands/negotiations - "hold out" for purity, if you will.** I do happen to blame them too somewhat for that, myself - YMMV.

The questions here, really, now, for ME, are these:

1. The Sprint Navigator bloatware on Epic: It is free, or pay-for? If it's free, then that's NOT a deal-breaker, and may very well cause me to end up switching carriers once the bugs are out of the Captivate (software/firmware update - 2.2 should do it quite nicely, I'm sure). Is there ANY non-deletable, pay-for bloatware at all on the Epic?

2. With the TMobile and Verizon versions of the Galaxy S: Is there any non-deletable, non-free carrier bloatware on either or both of THEM? If the answer is yes, then us anal-retentive folks are pretty much screwed, and I place *some* blame on Samsung. If the answer is No, then I'll remove most all the blame from Samsung and will most likely be saying goodbye to AT&T within a year, and going with one of the others (can you tell I hate bloatware?).

3. To go a different route, what about the Sprint EVO? Any such bloatware on that phone? It's interesting in its own right, though I'm not a big fan of HTC products.

mdtolic, you answered part of this, thank you, when you said "there's nothing I cannot delete". I may very well go back to T-Mobile to get the Galaxy when it's upgraded, - I was with T-mobile for 12-13 years (since the voicestream days) - they were so stupid in severing their connection with the people who made the best phone bar none at the time (Palm/Treo). But looks like T-Mobile may have learned a thing or two about getting & keeping good phones available; not just ones with slower-than-molasses Mobile Windows based junk.

:)

Thanks again!

Lookit, even if you don't consider the bloatware issue to be even 1% Samsung's fault, it STILL makes sense to gripe and complain to them, IMO ... they have to base their business decisions in part on *what the end-user customers want*, and if they are convinced into thinking or knowing that a high *enough* percentage of users despise this type of bloatware (and I personally don't know what the percentage is, and don't much care - all I care about is trying to get what I want, and get the best product value for my money and my time on earth), then this belief *might* must just push them 'over the line' on the next contract negotiations with one or more of the carriers, when their current contract(s) expire(s), such that they can and will (hopefully) demand that for carrier A or B to use their device, they must agree to make pay-for bloatware deletable.

**Also, look, much of the advertising/marketing that's being done here is directly from Samsung themselves, right? And one of their top 3 or 4 basic high-point selling features (probably always top 3, regardless of version/carrier being adverstised) is this: "Our phone is extremely customizable to your tastes, and probably much more customizable than your Iphone or other phone you currently use." Right?

Well, having non-deletable bloatware is antithetical to the idea of customizable - in fact, it's about as 100% toward the opposite end of the spectrum of "customizable" as you can get, to not be able to take something which you know you will never need, use, or want OFF of this screen or that screen. So SAMSUNG is bordering on misleading advertising then they say "super-customizable", and yet 'allow' this nonsense, as far as I am concerned. Yes, it's really customizable.... in many ways... but in SOME ways, it's not at all.

P.S. By the way, please don't even mention the Sony/AT&T Android phone to me. I had not one but TWO *extraordinarily bad* customer services experiences with Sony over the years, where they failed to repair or replace a defective product as promised, one of which was where I clearly proved to them that it was still under warranty (they even gave me a return authorization number). The other one I didn't have my receipt, but they still should have made it right & repaired their piece of junk, with the reputation they enjoyed at the time. Instead, both times they just mailed the product back with a simple brush off of "not under warranty" or some such.

Sidebar. In my opinion and belief, in order to not be crushed into cult-only oblivion by Android phones, Apple will have to, *at a minimum*, do these things to their next Iphone within 1.5-2 years:

1. Add some type of their own version of a Swype-style keyboard, even if it means getting sued for (alleged or not) patent/copyright violations; and
2. Enable/implement Mifi hotspot capability (this just makes sense, with ATT's huge network capability and variety of data plans); and
3. Generally innovate this and that small feature set at a much faster rate than they did from 3 to 4, by frankly, copying all the things that Android phones blow them away in, not the least of which is the swiping left to right to call, and swiping right to left to text, regardless of whether you're in the text or call log lists; and
4. Allow much much more free and cheap(er) songs, movies, ringtones, etc., from Itunes, to keep pace with all the free Android stuff.

That's a big order, but I think Apple is smart enough to see that they must do ALL of these things, with the possible exception of #1 - inertia alone can only cut the mustard for so long..... They *probably* need to go to other carriers besides AT&T, too, but not 100% sure on just *when* they'll need to do that. In the old days, people came to AT&T to get the Iphone - that's gonna be happening less and less as we go along here.

Oh, another thing, they also need to make their phone "insurABLE" against my/your/our own stupidity. Why in gawd's name can't we choose to pay $5 per month to cover EVERYTHING that could possibly happen save theft, like we can with every other phone on earth, if say, for example, we KNOW we're the droppin-it-in-the-toilet-prone type?

You mean to tell me they can't recoup the cost and even make a profit by charging those folks as a group $5 every single month per customer, indefinitely, and tack it on the phone bill, even with a dadgummed $125 deductible, chrissake? And even if they can't, then fine --just up the fee to $7/month, with a $150 deductible! Why on earth are Apple users forced to live with the idea & worry that "if my phone breaks due to my own negligence or whathaveyou", there's nothing I can do about it except shell out another $609"??? Why do we put up with this crap? Oh yeah, wait - I remember now - inertia (I already have chargers for the iphone!) and a really high screen resolution.

Very advanced screens, processors, apps, etc. are all great - but they're also (more or less) a WASH as between the best phones, save for special small percentage oddball screen preferences & such here and there. Oh, and of course Apple WILL eventually lose on apps.

Sheesh, who all is into the app game now.... Apple, Android/Google, & Blackberry, with Palm, Microsoft, & Samsung's own proprietary deals up and coming? That's a lot of competition there. Subject for a different thread..

UD, I love your nick. I'm known to be pretty frightening with a dremel and ball-peen hammer (and that's just to fix computers).

I have been very much on the fence with my Captivate in my first demo month. I sent one back, and almost just sent them both back to be done with it. I have one more week on the demo.

Yesterday i found out that I cannot boot into recovery mode, effectively killing my ability to root the device, further limiting its use to me.

I also find that without ever being launched, I have AT&T Hot Spots, AT&T Navigator AT&T IM, and QuickOffice running all the time, though i never launched them. My 3G data use keeps going up, though i am always on WiFi at home and work, don't stream in the car, and have 3G as secondary network to WiFi.

And, my 2.5 year old ipod Touch is a better Pandora player on WiFi.

The only things I would miss from the Captivate are Google Nav and the E-book reading on the gorgeous screen. But, with three laptops and two GPSes, it's hard to consider those mission critical.

I find the Android space to be interesting, and hopefully the pace of development will get the whole package closer to what Apple has done.

However, it was the same in the enterprise computing world. Sun, HP and IBM all made tightly coupled UNIX workstations and servers with their own OSes. That stuff ran and ran, and we built the Internet on it.

Windows has always been substandard crapware, and nothing has ever run comparably (to Solaris on Sun, for example) on any flavor of Windows.

I'm seeing the Android phones to be the Windows crapware and iPhone to be the more coupled (though not UNIX) platform. hard to get excited about stuff that doesn't work well.

Yes, good input, and more comment on that later...

My idea was to wait for 2.2, when you could supposedly tether devices with mifi even on Captivate, THEN tether an IPad to it! Best of all worlds; both app worlds; what's not to like!? Still may do this eventually with EVO or other Galaxy.

Anyhoo, if you want the details on the basic buggy problems with it that came and went, let me know. One issue that did NOT come and go, but was a consistent (arguable) problem was the GPS receiver on the Galaxy - it didn't pick up a signal and nail down my location as quickly or easily inside the house as my Iphones do (particularly when holding my hand a couple inches above it) - this is very worrisome to me, because I need a strong receiver - I do a lot of hunting, and need to be able to see where I am at all times - whether with GPS + 3G, or whether with a full-map-download app which does not rely on the 3G signal to work - still works with just GPS signal, which is everywhere. Regardless, the GPS receiver needs to WORK, and work well, even if cloudy and under thick forest canopy, and even if a cover is on the edges of the phone. Anyone know what portion of the Galaxy is the GPS receiver?

On the nickname, ha... I'm an amateur wannabe gunsmith, and well, if *anything* should be licensed, it's dremels, not guns.

Also, I'm sure this has probably been posted before, but if you haven't seen it, this is a most useful basic comparison of the different Galaxys:

http://www.billshrink.com/blog/9912...te-vibrant-captivate-total-cost-of-ownership/

I just wish it would compare battery life - I'd like to know if one or another type of Galaxy (such as perhaps the Epic) uses more battery life than the others for some reason...

look carriers in the US just want to take your money! they charge silly amounts for things that are free in europe like shareing G3 connection via wifi and charging extra for video calling which is the same price as a voice call here. i even hear data is expensive. (i get 7GB for €20)

it may seem like i went a little off topic there but my central point is that the reason there are so many problems with US Galaxy phones is the carriers wanting their own twist with exclusive models and addin a fattend version of samsungs software all in the aim of sucking more money from your pocket.

@LordHumongouz
how to put it into recovery mode

Oh I am. I groan 1000 times less per year than I did in 3 days with the Galaxy. Curse a lot less, too. Did you read the whole thread? I want very very much to like the Galaxy - I'm no fanboy of Apple by any stretch.

Sounds like in Europe, the Galaxy is what I want (or will be when debugged a bit). Too bad I'm not moving to Europe. Well I should say, thank gawd I'm not moving to Europe. Have fun with your country where the nanny state gov't controls your every move.

Sprint navigator is free. None of the sprint apps cost money and honestly, there isn't nearly as much bloatware on the epic as there is on the other galaxy s versions

Hehe that sounds like the usual brain washed American drivel, some parts of the USA are almost as inward looking as North Korea! We're pretty much on par with the US for nanny state, at least I don't have a sticker in my car warning that it might kill me and safety bongs when i open the door, just in case I don't notice I opened the door :D

I was reading patientley this guy's thread until he wrote this. Obviously he doesn't have any idea what a Galaxy S is capable of... in 3 days you couldn't even taste it. He's delirious and certainly iPhanboy.

You're talking about nanny states? Have you ever been to Europe? You can breathe freedom in the air, you're not afraid of being killed by a psycho moron when you go to college or the gas station. You're talking about nannies? How about nanny Steve Jobs who tells you the way you must grab your phone?

Go away and eat your national apple.

Oh man! you're so screwed going with iCrap! Good luck with the antenna-gate and glass-gate issues. Helicopter grade glass my butt! Anyways, did you know that with iPhones you're not able to assign mp3 as ringtones? That's enough to throw away that useless garbage. When I got my Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant, I understood that it'll be a lot of tweaking on my part, but that's just the beauty of it. It's fully customizable! Now my device is like a polished diamond, and with 2.2 coming out soon, its going to be absolutely flawless that will be able to support flash 10.1.

Well, good luck with your iCrap, and when you drop your phone (100% sure) and you'll see a shattered glass, just think of us smirking back at you.

You do know that you can get a Galaxy S without being on a carrier right? (AKA no bloatware out of the box)

Also if you are not feeling the Galaxy S please do yourself a favor and don't torment yourself with a Dell Streak, that will be another unhappy update on your Facebook page.

Finally if Apple is your thing that's cool, but you only gave Android 3 days you barely even scratched the surface on the learning curve.

Then again 3 days with an iPhone is a lifetime since that's more than enough time to do everything with the device...
