Root (Froyo ROM) The browser is just sooo slow...

I've been using the last 4 versions of the KaosFroyo ROM and it has always done my phone some good. The only complaint is that the browser just runs so slow. The pinch zoom is slow and sometimes lags. Even typing in the browser is slow. Everything else runs fairly snappy which is why I continue to use this particular ROM. But the browsing part leaves much to be desired...

anyone else? suggestions?

I have wiped the correct way and have done reboots. But this problem seems to stick.

I'm not having this problem. I do have location services turned off; using the multi-touch keyboard; plug-ins set to "on demand"; settings->cyanogenmod settings-> user interface -> reflow after pinch-in off; settings->cyanogenmod->performance->enable surface dithering off, heap size 24, use compcache on, use jit on. That's about all I can think of that I may have changed from defaults.

Have you tried any other browser besides the stock one? I never liked the stock one, but for other reasons (I could never get it to download stuff correctly). I'd suggest something like Dolphin, or Xscope maybe. I know Firefox has a version of their browser out as well. I haven't tried it, but I'd be surprised if they haven't put some effort into making it work decently.

Opera is fantastic! I believe it's faster (scrolling, zoom, etc..) than any of the other mobile versions of browsers I've tried such as Dolphin and Xcope. Amazingly fast!

Most mobile versions of websites are optimized and developed around the Webkit engine. If you use Opera, or any other non-Webkit browser, your browsing experience won't be as pretty. I personally will not move over to any other mobile browser unless it ran Webkit.

I suppose 'granted' is in order here but Opera is still faster than those others.

Isn't Opera a caching browser, like Opera Mini on Win Mobile? Basically, you send a request, it renders it remotely, and just sends you the display - none of the rendering is done by your (slow) phone. Of course, the issue with that, if you are privacy-concerned, is that Opera sees everything that you browse. It's fast, though.

(I ho have a point: there is no engine in Opera Mini on your phone, since your phone does no rendering. It just sends page requests and gets compressed screen info and shows that to you.)

And doesn't Opera still work for me very well, in fact better than the others?
Answer: Yes it does.

Oddly enough, I was reading some stuff on Froyo last night and it talked about the fact that the browser should be around 2-5 times faster than it was on 2.1.

Not my experience. It was noticeably slower with the ROM change - everything from typing, to click response, and scrolling. Everything else in the ROM was exceptionally snappier with the exception of the browser.

I've had a few quirks with the browser and drop down menus on websites, but other than that everything is pretty good speed wise.

I've had the same problem with KaosFroyo, the stock browser runs slower and so does opera. I also have a problem with them both crashing often. I love KaosFroyo but unfortunately because of that I no longer run it. I'm currently using xtrROM4.2 and haven't had a single problem with it. My browser runs faster, smoother, and never crashes. It's a step back from what I honestly want but, for me, it speeds up the thing I use most on my phone.

I have the same problem with the stock browser. VM heap size changed, overclocked, etc. etc. performance wise, but the browser is still laggy when scrolling around a page (like very slow and moves in lumpy increments), and I have some problems with menu's/selections etc.

Opera works fine for me (scrolling/zooming/speed).
