I see all these official guides, but don't know where to start b/c there are so many. is there an "idiots guide to rooting and rom'ing" anywhere? there is s a sticky but it is months old, is that still good?

I have a DINC sent to me right from factory, haven't even turned it on yet. already running froyo

which of these do I do? some? all? are they good for froyo?

thanks. actually my new refurb is at fimrware 2.1, I assume that guide will work?

Nope, that guide is for the new Unrevoked rooting program that is for 2.2 only.

I highly suggest waiting until your phone gets the 2.2 OTA or just installing the 2.2 RUU yourself and use the new method (from that link). It is a lot easier than the old way, it really is just "one click" to root. The program does it all. And unlike the previous versions, this package has unrevoked (the rooting program) and unrevoked forever (the program that gives you S-OFF) all in one.

will do

but, just to be clear, I still need to follow this guide/these steps, right? I'm not sure which part is "1 click" :)

Download the Android SDK from Google
Download the unrEVOked3 recovery reflash tool for windows, linux, or mac.
Download the modified drivers from unrEVOked.
Remove HTC Sync or PDA Net form your computer. The software and drivers may interfere with the rooting process. Once you

so I'm trying to do this "Windows HBOOT driver installation instructions" but under
other devices" I dont see my phone. any idea?

onnect the phone to your Windows machine with a USB cable and wait for the phone to say HBOOT USB PLUG on screen.
Open Device Manager.
Click Start, then right click on Computer, then click Properties, then click Device Manager.
Under Other devices, you should now see the Android 1.0 device, similar to the picture below.

I appreciate the help. but for a newb, I literally have no idea what any of this information is or what to do with it

Root for Froyo:

Since Unrevoked 3.2 had a couple bugs, the new Beta 3.21 has been released and anyone can test it for root.

join IRC channel #unrevokedtest

You can join through: freenode Web IRC (qwebirc)

The developer is in chat. Link as at top of IRC channel. (Can't distribute).

The reason I posted the above link is b/c I'm under the impression you were not rooted with unrevoked forever (s-off) prior to accepting the 2.2 OTA. If that is the case, in order to root you must use the beta which allows the rooting of a 2.2 phone. It can be accessed in the IRC. The original Unrevoked doesn't work to root 2.2. I was under the impression that's what you were attemtping to use but maybe I misunderstood.

Maybe linking the entire thread would be more helpful:

right, this was a fresh phone from factory, never rooted. shortly after activating, I installed froyo ota.

now, are you saying that I can't use unrevoked3 RC? I followed the root steps and get partway through but am getting this error

"communications with phone unexpectedly interrupted" in unrevoked 3

I'm not even sure where you got the link for Unrevoked 3. To my knowledge, it's been down for awhile since they're working out the bugs in the new version that roots stock 2.2. When I go to Unrevoked, I get this and it's been this way for a week or more now:

public:unrevoked3 [RootWiki]

They list the same IRC option to get the beta so you can root your 2.2 OTA phone. If you'd have rooted when you were on 2.1 and then installed Unrevoked Forever all before you loaded the OTA, you'd have had other options. As it is, you now have the beta option. FWIW, all the Incredible phones I've personally heard of have done great with the beta.

Took me about 30 minutes to root and s-off my phone back on 2.1 with unrevoked3. It really is pretty easy.

it's pretty easy if everything goes right

my point was that to a laymen "one click root" means I come home from work, plug my my phone into my computer, and click a button somewhere and I'm rooted. that is pretty far from what it actually takes from soup to nuts
