Android Desire: Need simple text editor and can't find it

My Android Desire is a superb device and will do almost anything I want. Even cleans up around the house and makes coffee and feeds the cat. However, there is one simple thing I cannot get it to do: provide me with a simple text editor like Wordpad so that I can write little texts on the go. I've searched everywhere for this function. I cannot imagine that it is missing from the phone, it's so basic. When I search for "text" I get all sorts of stuff on writing "text" messages, i.e. SMS messages (the term "text" seems to have lost its original meaning and is now used almost exclusively to refer to SMS messages).

Where is the Desire equivalent of Wordpad or Notepad or, better, Notepad++ ?

Are you telling me that there is no notepad supplied with the Desire ? There's a calendar, a gps, a camera, a voice recorder, all sorts of social networking tools, a camcorder, a clock, a flashlight, an internet browser, a mail client, a music player, a messaging client, a phone, a video viewer, a photo gallery, but no simple device to take some plain, simple, ordinary notes ?

If that's the case I'm wondering what sort of world this manufacturer lives in. Don't people write things there ?

There is a very basic note app - HTC notes - but its not much use

I did use Note Me, but it kept opening on its own and I ended up removing it in frustration. Now, I have AK Notepad, which is a freebie and can import/export txt files to and from SD cards. It's excellent as a quick note taker.

Thanks to all of your for your answers. I'm trying the various offerings to see which suits me best. I need something that will produce a file that I can transfer to a standard PC program like Word or Notepad for further editing.

I've installed it to try it but it talks about syncing with Snaptic and Google and I don't want to sync my notes with anyone or anything and can't work out whether this syncing is an obligatory part of the app.

I didnt sync mine. Its just local to my hand set

Txtpad is decent - its basically notepad for android, handles .txt files, which is what I use it for.

If youre looking for some kind of "organiser" type note/list maker like you find on every other phone under the sun then I like colornote, it has all sorts of funky options.

Have a look at Scribe as I've tried a few note apps and that is my favourite Notepad Notes Scribe - Android app on AppBrain Evernote is also worth considering Evernote - Android app on AppBrain

1+ for 'TxtPad Lite', a realy simple litle notepad

But when you like sketching, handwriting and texting on the same note, then take a look on 'DioMemo'.
When you like, the app does a little OCR on your handwriting, too

Yes and no. I'm greatly enjoying my Desire and am impressed by the variety of solutions/apps available. However, as a security-conscious person I am concerned that at this early stage of Android's career there is no easy/reliable way to find out if a given app is clean. In the Market the apps have notes in red saying that, for example "This app accesses the Internet", or "This app accesses your Contacts" where I cannot see any reason why the app should do any of these things. It is, in most cases, difficult to find out WHY the app wants to do these things.
The bottom line for me is that I don't store any data (e.g. in Contacts) which I don't want others to see or steal. But then I'm careful by nature. Others are less so.

Problem solved. Went back to the thread root (Android Desire) and logged in again and now the Thanks appears. However - this might be the source of the problem - when I simply refresh the page to see whether anyone has responded to my question or posting the Thanks icons disappear. Looks like a bug in the forum software.

Windows 7 64-bit /Firefox 3.6.10
