Is there a way to check if your screen is a AMOLED display or SLCD

Couldn't you just search your phone and see which screen it has?
The issue is even with the same model, manufacturers change the displays depending on availability.

For example, the HTC Incredible may ship with AMOLED screens, or be transitioned to SLCD screens later on.

So a user would need to look at the manufacturer date to try to figure it out, something not very easy to do.

Still waiting a good answer to the OP.

I take it the black screen with the cross is the AMOLED
the lit up black the SLCD

Correct. The SLCD screen has a backlight that is always on dark colors are washed out by the backlight. The AMOLED only powers each LED to display a color so you get a true black. This is why AMOLED has better power consumption than LCD, but SLCD is advertised as comparable to AMOLED for power consumption. The backlight in an LCD/SLCD is what makes those screens easier to read in bright/direct sunlight. The biggest complaint of AMOLED is that it's hard to read (some say nigh impossible). There's also Super AMOLED but those are only available for the Galaxy S line of devices due to manufacturing shortages (probably not going to change until 2012). Super AMOLED should have better power consumption than AMOLED/SLCD and helps with the sunlight issue. I don't have anythign comparing sharpness (like text) between Super AMOLED and SLCD, but I do know that the 720p Avatar on the Tmobile USA Vibrant (a Galaxy S phone) looks pretty damn amazing, with very good picture clarity in the background details.
