After examining and fooling with four devices in the Verizon store late this morning, I came away with a Samsung Fascinate rather than the X, which I went there for, rather than the Incredible, which I really only handled for a few minutes and rather than the 2, which seemed a bit better to me than the Incredible.

The X came in a close second, but while I was spending time with it I found myself looking forward to more Fascinate experience. I seemed to have just naturally gravitated to the overall "big Eris-like" look, feel and form factor of the Samsung.

And then there is that great display.. my my. :D

As I go through the (familiar) menus and tweak and configure I get the feeling that this thing was waiting for me, coming off the rooted Eris.

Just my 2 cents at this point, having owned it for only about two and a half hours (I continued to configure and play with it while it was on the charger.. it's fully charged now so I'm going to make more calls, text and take photos, run a few videos, etc ;)).

Yippee. :)

Congrats. :D

My wife also went from a rooted, overclocked Eris to the Fascinate. Now I couldn't pry the thing from her hands, she loves the Fascinate.

It seems quite the natural transition; especially after running the Eris rooted for so long.. the little screen on the Eris was beginning to bother me on news sites with videos and even here at AF in full HTML mode rather than the restrictive phandroid mode; the Fascinate has no trouble loading pages fast and showing me more of each page without having to size them down.

Now to try to figure out how to get the soft buttons to stay lit longer.... :D

BTW the eris was the worst phone I ever owned.. e.

... yeah. I would still have mine if it wasn't for the constant silent bug... otherwise I loved that phone.

Hey Frisco, Congrats on the new phone!

I read this thread earlier today and almost got a Fascinate myself based on your review. It does seem like a great phone.
But I went with the D2. I had used a used D1 that i bought for a few months before it died on me, and i loved it. So i couldn't help but to be drawn to the D2.
But i am not quite sold on it. If I change my mind about it in the next 2 weeks, i will either get the FAscinate or the Dinc. ... we'll see what happens.
Not rooting until I'm sure.

You rooting right away?

Thanks, guy.

There seems to be fewer reasons to root the Fascinate than the Eris. The only thing yet that comes to mind right away is the plethora of ridiculous, bubble-gummer apps... unbelievable; I need to find a way to rid my device of many of them.

As it is, LP is fine with this as it was in the Eris.

Way to go on your choice of a new device, I was considering that one as you probably saw.

I had no "real" reason to move away from my (rooted) Eris at all. That little baby has been solid from the beginning, at 1.5, 2.1 OTA and of course through all of the ROMs I've had in it since rooting weeks ago.

It's just that there are better devices coming along all the time and I don't mind moving along with the technology.

I'm the same way about my lawn mower:

Looks like you'll still be raking with either of those mowers. :p

I'm coming from a rooted eris as well, was running xtr 4.x. I've had the fascinate for a week now and it still continues to amaze me. Have to say battery life is great and wouldn't mind getting rid of these vzw bloatware apps. Other than that awesome phone!

Did you do much to configure away from battery usage?

I was tempted to leave everything at the out-of-the-box defaults, such as live wallpapers etc. But I gave in and got rid of the live wallpapers and turned off GPS and wifi and did other battery saving things.

The device was first turned on at 11:45 am, charged to 100% at around 1 pm and shut down at 10:30 pm with 63% battery.

It was used heavily at my kid's high school football game, texting and sending pics of the marching band, etc. Several phone calls and a lot of exploring of the menus and apps.

So, yes, the battery life seems quite good on the Fascinate.

I did the same as well no live wallpapers (only to show off) :) Left sync on turned brightness way down. Even with my inability to put the phone down and watching movies constantly I still get awesome battery life compared to my Eris.
I have yet to see a former Eris owner who wasnt pleasantly surprised by how much longer the SF lasts.
My own 2cents here is that like others I enjoyed the fad of live wallpaper the first few days but when I went to static it did definitely seem to kick battery drain down a tick, nothing earth shaking but noticeable

Baloney. You are wrong.

Samsung Fascinate SUCKS!!!

ERIS FOREVER!!!

Hahaha. I can't even type that with a straight face. I hate my Eris so much. Only phone I've ever had that made me cry like a baby and lose sleep at night.

Now that's funny.

Yeah, mine is pretty frustrating. I can't even Swype good because the screen is so small. I hit too many letters. It was an OK phone until so much started coming out that wasn't just a step ahead but a light year ahead. It has made me really cautious about getting a new phone. I don't want to end up stuck again like this time.

I have a question that may sound stupid to some so I apologize in advance. I just ordered the SF online and will receive it tomorrow :). I currently have a rooted Eris (Xtrom) that my daughter would like to take over. Do I need to unroot before I can activate on her line? She has no data package so I know I'll need to add that but I wasn't sure about the rest.

Thanks in advance for your help.
