Root Installing an OFFICIAL update on a CUSTOM ROM. Is it safe?

Hi Kids.

Okay so some of you may know, I have a rooted Desire running the MoDaCo R8 Froyo ROM, and for the first time since I've had the phone, even pre-rooting days, I've got an OFFICIAL update.

Not sure what build/version it is as it doesnt say, but it patches the Android OS, canges to GMail, and improved keyboard layout. It's a 25.06MB download

If that helps.

How safe is it to install an official update onto an unofficial ROM?

Thanks in advance

Andy.

Help? I accepted the OTA HTC Update without thinking yesterday and now my Wi-Fi is showing 'error' and doesn't work. I haven't checked for anything else playing up yet.

I had unbranded from O2 and used an unofficial / Custom ROM before upgrading to FROYO in accordance with threads on this forum about a week before O2 released FROYO earlier this month.

What can I do now as I am in a poor signal area and used Wi-Fi for all my downloading, browsing and emailing? Without Wi-Fi any downloading steps to correct this will be very difficult in this area!

If you flashed an official ROM and you have update problems, you're in the wrong forum section.

Official updates/flashes will always update hboot, but that has nothing to do with anything really.

The post is about installing OTA updates over custom roms, which is why I moved it here.

Now he has and has an issue, it probably no longer should be here but in the attempt to not have broken redirects from the original post's location, I am going to leave for the time being.

I was responding to DaveY62100, who's installed official froyo.

I unbranded and upgraded to FROYO using threads in the Forum Section and now I accepted the OTA update and have lost the use of Wi-Fi. I would just appreciate an answer to my problem please?

I think the thread titled: 'FROYO update (2.09.405.8) Windows not required' may be the method to use, but I just need some reassurance it won't brick my phone.

I bit the bullet and carried out the above method using file PB99IMG.zip and it has seemed to have worked. I now have Wi-Fi working, Thanks to all.

I checked once again I accepted to download the latest HTC update (ref Google mail inboxes and keypad), but then Wi-Wi was not responding again at all and showing 'error' however, so I had to go all through the whole procedure again, as at the top of this tread titled: 'FROYO update (2.09.405.8) Windows not required' - another 4 hour slog!! I now have software 2.09.405.8. once more with Wi-Fi working, but I am unable to download the latest HTC update and I also suspect any future OTA updates and upgrades!

Incidentally I have a HTC desire mobile unbranded from O2. Both times and I had to use a Goldcard with the file PB99IMG.zip also on the SD Card to be able to complete the procedure, which seems at odds for an unbranded mobile. The lead thread said " you will need a Goldcard if your phone is branded".

How oh! how do I get my mobile in the state with FROYO that it is able to accept future OTA software updates and upgrades and have everything working. I am sure quite a few people on this forum will know the answer?

If your phone has an O2 splash screen, it's branded. If you didn't buy the phone directly from O2 yourself it's possible that it has been debranded.

You can upgrade directly to 2.10.405.2 with an RUU (avoiding the OTA update). This is better on another thread as it hasn't anything to do with rooting.

Thanks Teppic, but my problem fitted the title of this thread. I am not able to move it and didn't want to start the same thread again and get a slapped wrist! (;-)

My phone came from O2 but I unbranded it to remove the O2 splash and upgraded to FROYO via a RUU long before 02 released the O2 OTA software upgrade to FROYO.

Everything was OK until the latest HTC OTA update arrived at my mobile and I accepted it only to find the Wi-Fi not working. I restored using the file PB99IMG.zip then I rather stupidly accepted the latest HTC OTA upgrade again - only to find the Wi-Fi not working once again.

Can you please direct me to the method and files to upgrade directly to 2.10.405.2 with an RUU (avoiding the OTA update), as you suggested above? I think I had that version after I unbranded from O2 and upgraded to FROYO, but I still got the latest HTC OTA update arrive at my mobile! That was when it all started to go wrong.
Cheers.
