Root WiFi tether for rooted 2.2

OK I've read a lot of posts about getting WiFi tether for a rooted phone, BUT not many talk about the newest version of a rooted froyo 2.2.
The android-wifi-tether site shows only a "wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre9.apk" for the HTC Evo 4G Android 2.1 (Eclair) version.
Some posts say it works for 2.2, but it clearly says *** EXPERIMENTAL ***, and that is for 2.1.
SO given that many of us will now have a rooted 2.2, who is using what to get WiFi tether on our rooted 2.2 EVO?

I think the ROM and the kernel may impact which version of wifi tether works on your phone. Different people are reporting that they are able to run certain versions but not others. I am currently using pre8 with VirusROM and BFS #9.

I'm rooted with 3.2 "one click" . Froyo 2.2. wireless tether pre9 and all is fine.

The main reason I rooted was to get the WiFi tether. I do not want to change ROMs or kernels etc. So are there more who have Froyo 2.2 rooted like above that have used "wireless tether pre9"? What are your reports?
BTW, I'm not very interested in using Blue Tooth to tether, so I'm only interested in Hot Spot applications.

Have you tried using pre8?

I too was wondering that. On 3g i was just getting 689kbs down and around 110 kbs up. On 4G I get around 900kbs down and 400 up. It doesn't seem consistent though, sometimes watching a youtube video doesnt need to buffer, other times it holds up for a bit. Does this seem avg for the wireless tether? PDAnet seemed tons quicker. How would one acquire higher speeds?

What exactly is happening when you try? You may want to try a different version of tether. Also mine woudn't work with Unrev until I flashed Fresh's ROM.

I test on win 7 and vista they both working at the same time. So I tried the third computer with XP. It will not connect and said the network may be out of range. I disconnect the computer with window 7 and tried agian but it still said the network is out of range.

All I have here is 3g and I was gettin around 750kb down downloading a podcast It does seem to be all over as far as speeds go. Maybe it's just the system? I have a few of the versions on my sd card and I'm going to try them till I get the best speeds, but that might not be a good way yes to measure either

So, are you all saying that you can get away with using Unrevoked to simply gain superuser privileges, then install wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre9.apk?

I don't really want the hassle of loading a custom ROM, or doing a titanium backup. I only need the hotspot functionality.

That is correct. Works perfectly.

I have tried Pre9 and Pre8 but both have a much slower hotspot upload rate than does the Evo on Speedtest.net. Has anyone seen this problem or have a solution? (380 nominal upload on phone and 70 or less on the Hotspot).

Thanks.

I don't have any technical knowledge of how wifi tethering works but it seems to me that some degradation in speed should be expected when you add another layer of connectivity. I have not seen it stated anywhere that one should expect tethered speeds to be comparable to the speed you get from the phone alone.

I am running pre9 and I tethered my friend's Hero to test it. She was getting slightly slower speeds on tether than when her phone was connected directly to the WiFi router. Her native WiFi speed was no where close to the EVO's native Wifi speed.
