Root Can we Unroot yet?

I'm having a bit of buyers remourse (coming from the DX) and I see there is a root available for this phone (Fascinate), but is there a way to unroot it once I've rooted?

I miss some of my rooted aps and I won't feel like this phone is making a fair comparison against my DX until I root it and they are both on equal grounds.

Overall I am liking this phone. It is a great phone but I think I unfairly expected it to be as good in every catagory as my DX and more. There are definitely pros and cons to making the change but I'll save that for another thread.

So... it seems that rooting the phone, fixing the Search button on the bottom of the phone and renaming some bloatware MIGHT NOT prevent me from getting the OTA Froyo 2.2 update. Is that right?

Hello all,

new to android, so new in fact my phone arrives Thursday lol...

I am up in arms about rooting... The one thing I want to do is remove all of the Verizon stuff that comes with the phone... Shouldn't be there anyways, but that's another story.

so, question... Is it worth rooting? Do i have to unroot for the 2.2? Should i just wait it out? and... i'm just a noobie... i followed the link for unrooting, but i'm sorry... but when following the link, i'm assuming i'm putting the download on the SD card? I want to make sure i know how to unroot before i do root... if i actually go down that path.

Hello TopherWV, welcome to Android Forums.

I don't think the Fascinate needs to be rooted, however, I rooted mine out of the urge to remove the bloatware, which I've done.

No need to overclock, as the processor is blazing fast and the display is remarkably clear and bright.

Some Fascinate users have issues with things here and there that they feel rooting can resolve; I've seen none of those issues on my device as yet (GPS problems? Something to do with the search soft key? ..etc).

I'm coming off an Eris, which benefited more dramatically from rooting and had a vast array of ROM develpers putting out Froyo ROMs and amazingly tweaked 2.1 ROMs as well.

I don't want to mod anything like the processor... I do want to strip the device of any VZ crap. It's bad enough I have to deal with the Bing thing, even though I know about the workaround... it's the point. So, i want to strip the thing of stuff i don't need that runs in the background and takes up unneeded space...

Given that... should I just wait for 2.2 if i have to unroot? what do you guys think?

is there anyway to strip that stuff without rooting?

My 2 cents: like just about everyone else here I rooted primarily to get rid of VZW bloat and to re-google my searches. There are also certain apps I like/use/prefer that need root to work.
Any and all of us will need to unroot and restore the ROM back to default to receive the Froyo OTA. However, equally true the leaked Froyo and custom ROM's will be out weeks ahead of the OTA and some of us will just going that route. All in all, anyone who was able enough to root can unroot

I've never had occasion to use that feature, myself, preferring to use the voice search icon in the app drawer.

As it is, I rooted just four days into owning the Fascinate to get rid of silly bloatware, so, as I tested that feature just now (for the first time), it works but, again, is not needed.

To me rooting is about access to the files more than fixing issues because I test the device in the store for a long time (long enough to annoy a floor rep or two ); if I see an annoyance I take notice and move away from that device, as I did the Incredible.

Just as an update and speaking as someone who manually rooted his SF. There is now an app which in one click will root you and will another click can get you lag fix. Search Market for Lag Fix and its probably the first one you get: One Click Lag Fix. Also for removing bloat again its pretty much a one app fix. Get Titanium Back Up and you're set [after you're rooted].
Its one of those things, early adopters do it the hard way but if you wait an easier path always emerges. Today anyone with a factory fresh SF, can DL just 2 apps and be rooted and bloatless in minutes

I just tested the un-rooting method linked in post #2 and it worked flawlessly.

Good to have that.

Of course I now have all the kiddy stuff in my app drawer again.. guess I'll re-root.

By the way, un-rooting using Odin did not cause the device to have to be activated again, nor did it change any of my home screen settings or menu settings, etc.

I was surprised to see my configured home screen fire up, instead of the generic, stock one. I was even prepared to have to re-activate the device.

Then I thought that perhaps the un-root was not successful, so I went into Root Explorer and deleted YouTube and a few others. The confirmation of them being deleted did show, so, again, I thought I was still rooted.

But then I saw them all in the app drawer. Rebooted. Still there.

And, of course, "mount r/o" would not change in R.E.

I noticed yesterday, after attempting a new "universal" root method, and going back to root via the old tried and true method, that this unroot method only brings the stock apps into the device but leaves it rooted.

Doesn't work on my Fascinate.

It fails at "rm /system/app/Superuser.apk."

[edit]: finding the correct paths to Superuser.apk and su .. they are on the sd card, not in /system/bin.. everything else appears to be correct paths.

So, after

mount -t rfs -o remount,rw /dev/block/stl9 /system

it becomes rem /sdcard/Superuser.apk ~ and so on.
