Help New to Droid 2 - confused about the internal 8 gigs

So, I got my Droid 2 today, and I'm curious...

I know the thing has 8 (or 6.5 gigs, by my count) of internal memory. Now..is this memory user accessible without root or is it strictly for apps? Meaning, cause I use my 16 gigs card AND a few gigs from the internal memory for music and video or is it strictly for installation of apps?

I did notice that when I installed Beautiful Widgets, it created a folder in data on my freshly formatted SD card to keep the skins, so thats what got me wondering what exactly the internal memory is for.

Thanks!

The reason for the Beautiful Widget thing is probably based on the app itself. When it came out phones didn't have that much flash memory built in so the app wrote any extra data it used for skins to the sd card. Maybe someday Beautiful Widgets would be updated to write data to flash memory seeing that most android phones coming out anymore are getting more flash data.

The internal is pretty much for apps, as far as I know. Other things that get stored in there are things like pictures and videos that are sent you you via text messaging (MMS). Although you have the option to save that picture and video to your SD card, if you haven't deleted it from your messaging app, it's in your internal memory.

The 8GB internal is supposed to be available for installed programs to use...as noted I presume programs may or may not use it depending on the program's awareness of it and support for it.

You might be able make use of the space, if you have Root access - the /Data folder is mapped to that internal storage space.

If your app has root access it may be able to read/write from that space (i.e., save files there). However, I tried with a simple text editor and while it could see the /Data directory and allowed me to select "Save" to save a file there, the file was not actually saved. So the OS may block that kind of activity....
