Please help me root this android phone guys? This should be easy since its running stock android 1.6(besides some installed cricket apps). This phone is going to be a mass market android phone because of its price, specs, and cheap plan rate's.This phone needs to be updated to froyo bad, it needs a performance boost.Im a android noob but ive hacked ipods, gps,s and computer programs. So please help me out guys and if you need anything let me know. Thanks!

No offence, but I am rather skittish when it comes to this sort of thing. You, and others say rooting is a good thing, but lots of things can go wrong. Admittedly, I might be wrong about my opinion of rooting. I am flexible and I can admit when I am up in the air about something I know nothing about.

Can anyone tell me why I might be overly paranoid? I am not an expert, and I love my Zio just the way it is now. The things one wants to accomplish by rooting are of little consequence to me, so I'll forgo rooting; I can wait until January to see if Criket indeed releases an OTA update.

I searched pages on the site you gave and I see nothing to say the Zio is supported. I am not saying my Zio cant be rooted; I am saying, when a specific device is not listed, I am looking for disaster should I try.

What am I missing? I am certainly willing to admit that I might be wrong.

The site tells us that rooting improperly can damage the phone and it seems to me that if a device is not supported, I should not try.

I too am very interested in rooting the Zio,.. The only reason I hesitate is that I'm uncertain exactly what it will do to my current setup. I have alot of contacts and apps I like alot and rooting a phone sounds alot like an OSRI (operating system reinstall) on a computer,.. wiping everything out that's there for a different OS.

once you root the phone you now have full access to the phones os. just like having administrator rights on windows.

Does rooting the ZIO with the process you used from XDA make it so it is now running 2.1 or 2.2? I am thinking about getting this phone but I refuse to use 1.6 as it was terrible on the HERO.

Thanks

nope. you need the carrier and manufacturer to release a rom update to 2.1. you do need to root in order to run custom roms. criket said it will release a upgrade sometime later this year, no specific ver was released.

can anyone possibly point me in the right direction to show how to delete dumb apps that came with the phone.I'm pretty sure the root app worked but i don't know how to delete stuff i don't want or do just about anything worth while.sorry to keep asking but i'm really illiterate when it comes to this kinda stuff but am willing to do whatever it takes to learn it.

ok so i've rooted my zio on cricket, still running android 1.6 ( and sick of it ) ready to update to froyo 2.2 and get rid of these crappy apps from cricket ( UNO, Midnight Bowling, Ect. ) but have absolutely no F-ing idea how to do this. anyone got any info?

Once you root there may be a way to get rid of UNO, Midnight Bowling, etc I am going to root my phone this afternoon and then use the tips found here

Remove amazon mp3 store or other stock apps (rooted device) - Android @ MoDaCo

to see if i can uninstall the bloatware from the phone. I'll let everyone know my results.

heres the link [APP] [ROOT] 1-click root for N1 (Latest ver: 1.6.2 beta 5) - xda-developers download the newest version 1.6.2 beta 5 (now lets gets some custom roms made.)

I Did it!! I got rid of the bloatware!! (Uno and Midnight Bowling) Follow these steps.

1.) Download Universal Android Root from above.
2.) Root the phone. (install Universal Android Root, open program, root)
3.) Download Android Mate from the Market. Install this.
4.) Click on File Manager in Android Mate, give it super user powers.
5.) In the address box type /data/FLEX/app
6.) Check the apps you want to delete.
7.) Click delete on the bottom.

Word of Warning: These are system apps, delete whatever at your own risk, i take no blame if you brick your phone. This is how i got rid of my bloatware, you do so at your own risk.

Rooting the Zio was simple! Just download "Barcode Scanner" from the Market and scan this image (or follow the link at the bottom). The best part is it is not permanent, so when the new updates come out you will still get them.

P.S. If you are looking to tether your Zio wirelessly, download "Barnacle" from the market as it is the only app I have found that will work with the Zio. After installing, open the app and hit your menu button, then hit settings, check the box that says "Skip wpa_supplicant" and you can now wirelessly tether your Zio.
