I LOVE Verizon! NFL app saved me!

!!!!!!

Ok, so I went on a little "lake house vacation" with the wife for Sunday/Monday. It would have been great but we couldn't use the boats (not our house), it was cloudy and stormy, and they had only 5 channels (2 weather 24/7, 2 paid programming 24/7 and NBC).

After we had made love like rabbits, played scrabble and darts, and talked about our deepest feelings, there wasn't much left to do and I wanted to see the Bears game so badly!

This place is in the BOONIES and in a valley so I was told by my wife's family who all have Verizon that they had bad service. Get this: Droid X pulls 1 bar of 3g service so i go into the NFL app and watch Red zone for the entire set of noon games (including the Bears/Cowboys) while my wife took a nap (i had tired her out, hehe). Then she watched half of the 4:15 games with me while it sat in the multimedia homedock.

Verizon + free NFL app turned boring afternoon into supercalifragilistic afternoon!!@!@!!

Just had to relate how awesome i think the verizon/nfl deal is right now. I will be sad to go to Sprint next year.

On a side note, my bro called me from Oklahoma saying is iPad was out of juice and he left his charger at home. I clicked open google maps, search, send to email and through handcent. 10 seconds later he has the address, directions and phone number of the closest Best Buy to Enid, OK. Then i went back to watching the NFL in the middle of nowhere!!!

This is an I-love-droidx-android-verizon-free nfl app thread!

Just wanted to share the love while we all stew in misery because the "First Coming of 2.2" hasn't happened yet. Happy Tuesday! :D

How did you get video for free? Whenever anyone tries to view them, it asks to subscribe to Vcast for $10 per month!?!?!?? All the other stuff in the app is free though.

yeah, i have heard the same. i traded for my X on Craigslist so i have no idea when it was purchased and if he got the NFL app right away. i guess he must have because i watched 4 hours of football on Sunday and didn't pay a dime. it was beautiful.../tear

as a side note, the quality is just bearable. Don't get me wrong it was AWESOME being able to watch every touchdown of every game and the audio is perfect but it sucks that it's not full screen and 720p or whatever (kinda like the commercial makes it look like).

Heck, i have the animal planet app and the videos you get from that are all much nice and use the full droid x screen. Sad they were cheap on the NFL app.

I think it depends when you downloaded/first accessed the service.

I downloaded the app the first day it came out on my D1, and haven't ever been prompted to pay $10.

I had the app on my storm, then the day I got my X, they updated it (scared I was going to get charged I waited to "agree") and haven't been charged since. Although they did mention they don't start charging until like September 9th, season basically. But heck, the red zone on my provider is 7/month, I would pay 10/month any day just for that - real HDMI to the rescue! :D

So that kept you busy for 40min. Apparently it was a long drawn out game of scrabble.

The point is not the length of time. The point is the passion that radiates between us. By the wide smile on my wife's face when she drifted off to sleep, i'd say she agrees!

Plus it was more like 20 minutes each time so 60 minutes would be more accurate. :D

I'm wondering if i'll have the free video on the app next week. I just talked to a co-worker who said Redzone was free on Comcast for the weekend or something, just to get people hooked. He watched it all day and agreed it was awesome. But since it won't be free on cable next weekend, maybe it won't be free on my app either....

i'll try and remember to post back here in a week. Even though i'll be in such euphoric froyo goodness that i might not be of a sane mind to do so...

Yeah redzones been free since the first weekend of the season, last Sunday was the end of the freeness. We have have a full HD setup and for some reason (comcast) the redzone channel didn't look good at all (compared the FOX/CBS), I was pumped the zone via X via HDMI was better quality than cable. Of course that may change once comcast starts charging.

EDIT: I'm not really sure that comcast, or any provider is in cahoots with Verizon though. Think they are just both promoing there services at the moment.

I'm not paying...it is a worthless app without the video I think.

What do mean by that? The app has three channels that stream video, the redzone is the same exact channel you would pay for through your local provider. That plus the real HDMI to your TV and you have the redzone, plus two other channels - only difference is, you can take your phone and cable anywhere, wifi is preferred but 3g certainly works. That's like saying you don't like your phone because you can't call anyone.

So you have to pay $10/month to watch video on the app. Two questions:

1) What does the app do free of charge? What free features does it have, I guess is what I'm asking.

2) Can I just pay $10/month for a few months until football season is over then cancel? :D

1) I installed before the date specified so I'm not going to get charged either way BUT I've read here and from what I understand the app its self, which is very nice and organized ( a tab bit sluggish at times ) is free, there is 3 channels, NFL Network, RedZone and Sunday Night Football (NBC). To view any channel the app uses Vcast, that's when I think you start to get hit, but still its a good value IMHO. Again though, I nor my GF won't get charged (this season) but this is what I've read here - only time will tell, or a VW rep.

2) In the licensed agreement it did state that you can cancel whenever you want, same way the Redzone stops at the end of the season.

EDIT: to add to your first question, the app itself is nice, very well put together, visually appealing BUT it does take a second to move screen to screen unless you're already in a section and move to a subsection. It recommends you use WIFI, and it is faster when connected but it is still stable on 3G. Theres some fantasy tracker (never used that), favorite team, notifications, schedule and a constant update on any NFL news. I still have and occasionally use ScoreMobile but the NFL app is much better. Most of the news is generated from NBC.

FYI guys, with 2.2 Froyo (flash) you can stream live games from one of the sites that streams them. I have been watching espn every day, and the nfl game of my choice on sundays, plus nfl red zone. Free + any game you want > verizon's nfl app. ;)

realsportz.net FTW - yes, I've taken and used (even this past weekend) that avenue, I streamed the vikings game via HDMI from my PC, although alls well on my end the quality of streaming broadcast is in no where a comparison, and thats all pending you even have a quality connection speed - and again, you either tote your PC around or your X. I love the fact the entire action is mobile as it gets.

Will the app tell you if you are going to be charged? I just checked mine and was able to watch a video with no warning of Vcast or anything for charges to my bill? It just played.

The warning is when you install the app, there is an agreement that you either accept or decline. I'm assuming once you see that Vcast circle that's when you get charged. You will see a "data charge" on your bill for media, I think verizons app will show it, if not check on their web site. Pretty much up-to-date.
