Root Kernal question

It took me weeks of reading to learn the language and process to root my phone with the easiest recent unrevoked 3.21. I come from the Windows Mobile world so I had to learn a whole new lingo. Now I'm getting there but have a ways to go.

SO, does anybody have a step by step procedure for flashing a kernal or ROM? Every time I read a quick explanation there are several assumed items that are mentioned that beginners will not get. Also many times I read several different short explanations, followed by someone else adding, "and don't forget to..." which also makes it more confusing. Everyone is well meaning, but multiple pieces of advice tend to be confusing.

for instance:
"copy the ZIP file to your SD card" - how? Do I just copy it from my computer using the USB connected as a "Disc Drive"?
"flash it like a ROM" - OK I've read a lot on this but I'm still a little hazy. "There are multiple ways to reboot into recovery. The main way is to hold the volume button down, then power up. Programs like ROM Manager and Fresh Updater let you reboot into recovery from your phone while its powered on." I'd like to see some step by steps of videos on this.
"wipe cache & dalvik cache" and "and battery stat"- Here is another item I've heard before but not seen a good how to instructions.

Any help would be appreciated.

1. Yes, you don't even need a computer. Just download it on your phone and move it to the root of the SD card using estrongs or astro file manager.

2. Flashing like a ROM means installing the file from the SD card in recovery. The only difference is with a ROM, you must do a full data wipe. With a kernel you only need to wipe cache & dalvik cache.

3. Holding volume down and the power button will bring you to the bootloader menu where there is an option to boot into recovery. I do not use ROM manager because it requires clockwork recovery but there is an option for this in the main menu. I use quickboot which gives you one click access to recovery.

4. Wipe cache, dalvik cache and battery stats are located under the wipe option in Amons RA recovery. I think wipe dalvik cache is located in the advanced menu of clockwork.
