Help RJ45 to Micro USB?

I was in several hotels the past two weeks, and although they all advertised WiFi in the room, none had reliable access. They all had a wired connection, though.

So I was wondering about getting or making a Micro USB to RJ45 cable, and jacking in that way. Anyone know if this would work, and if such cables exist?

In order for this to work you'd have to have a network adapter driver on the EVO, assuming you are talking about getting the net on the EVO. i would just stick with 3G in that case, or bring you're own wireless router with you. Getting the microusb to convert to an RJ45 for a net connection, while not impossible, would probably be a pain compared to simply setting up your own hotspot.

There's a ton of reasons you won't be able to find this:

1. You'd need more than just a cable, you'd need an entire usb ethernet device.
2. You'd need to give the EVO USB Host support. (Thus far, never done on an EVO, pretty freakin' hard)
3. You'd need a microUSB adapter.
4. You might need an external power source since I'm not sure the microusb can even provide power (As it's not designed for that)
5. You'd need drivers for it.

There is no way to get this to work on a phone. You would need to have ethernet drivers, hosts, etc, and the phone is just not capable of this. The only thing the usb port is for is transferring data to the sd card and charging.

and although they all advertised WiFi in the room, none had reliable access.

Sounds like you should talk to the hotel manager and complain.

Thanks. I take it that this was not one of my better ideas ...

FYI, I did complain, but the manager was like "It is working from my desk". The reason 3G was not an option is that I was in Austria and Hungary, that is, GSM Land. Had only WiFi.

I was able to go to the bar or lobby for WiFi, and survived. I really hope HTC puts a GSM radio in the next EVO. That can't cost much. My stinking Blackberry is quad-band, and costs no more than other BB's.

Hi, any update on this method ?
Does it work ?

On what method? I already stated, this won't work with the evo, or any other phone for that matter. The evo doesnt have host support, and Android doesnt have the necessary drivers and framework to accept an ethernet connection. Those links in the above post will not work, those are for other devices.

Thinking a much better Idea would be to have a mini wifi that you could plug into the rj45 that would be better IMO problem with cables is being limited to their size so if you have a 10 foot cable then you can only move ten foot. With the Wifi you should at least be able to move freely around the room not to mention the drivers and everything else that others have mentioned
