Orange HTC Desire 2.2 (Froyo) update

Hi guys,


Received word this morning that there is a delay in getting the Android 2.2 update OTA to everyone.

We are still waiting for HTC to supply us with the 2.2 ROM however you should expect to receive the update around mid-September..

Why say that when you have no intention of actually delivering? You haven't even got handsets in stock so god only knows how you can state that you'll release 2.2 in 14 days "or so" time.
Just grow a pair, relieve the pressure from yourselves and call it November. OK so you have to put up with a bit of flak, but just blame HTC and then everyone will leave you alone. That's gotta be better than a fortnightly hauling over the coals.... *shakes head* :thinking:

@Xavier - I think Vicdude is voicing an opinion that is shared by MANY Desire users with Orange phones, and it's an opinion based on experience with other Android phones with Orange ROM's. While the post may be a little harsh, I'm sure he's just sounding off.

My worry is that the official Orange update will contain lots of crap that nobody will ever use and that cannot be uninstalled - in complete opposition to the open, customisable and user-friendly ethos on which Android is based.

I pay Orange a shedload of cash every month for 2 contracts, but if I had known that my Desire would be loaded with the useless stuff, I would have gone to another network who understand what their Android customers want and keep network branding to the absolute minimum.

Didn't think I was being rude..... it was merely a suggestion. Grow a pair and stop putting yourselves in this situation. That's not rude! Rude would be to call you a fatty when I don't even know you or that your mum is.... oh you get it ;) :D

the 'Don't shoot the messenger' defense gets a little wearying - we've got no-one else to aim at.

I've been very happy with Orange for the last few years, but since getting an Android phone I'm becoming more and more dispirited. While I appreciate that many people aren't interested in using their Android phones to their full potential, there is still a small (and ever-growing) number of users who ARE, and I count myself among them. I feel that we are treated poorly by Orange as a company, and by the Customer Services teams who are ill-equipped to deal with Android-related queries and frequently issue blatant untruths in their correspondence.

It is obvious that Orange brand their phones purely to increase revunue, with apps such as 'Traffic TV' and trial version of games - all impossible to remove yet very easy to switch to paid subscriptions - and the disabling of GTalk, an inherent component of the OS, purely because it competes with Orange's own charged instant messaging service.

It is insulting to be told time and again that the delay of FroYo's release is to ensure that it is compatible with Orange's network provision, when customers who have unbranded phones on Orange have been using FroYo problem-free for some time. It seems evident that it is more to do with the unwanted branding Orange insist on applying to these supoosedly open, customisable handsets, and the time it takes for them to prepare and apply this.

Coupled with the constant obfuscation is the inability or refusal to provide any sort of accurate information regarding the (doubtless branded) version of FroYo's actual release date. Orange repeatedly rely on tweets and e-mails (with the caveat that they don't represent the view of the company) to release information, knowing full well that they are then not bound by it.

It is insulting and frustrating, and has certainly made me less likely to purchase another branded handset from the company, and more likely to change provider at the end of my contract.

I'd appreciate any feedback, and if you were able to pass these comments (and the countless others on the topic posted in this forum) to someone who actually has any authority within the company I'd be most grateful.

I'll also await a more definite announcement regarding FroYo's release with eager anticipation.

I had a sit down with one of the device managers at 1o'clock today as promised and all he can advise to me at the moment is that it's 'imminent'.

That could mean tomorrow, or next week.. He's going to find out a definite date and then (if he can) let me know and I will then of-course, post here..

I understand that a final build has been produced, but final isn't always 'final' when it comes to the mobile industry...

Orange don't need to test FroYo to make sure it's compatible with their network. FroYo WORKS on the Orange Network, as hundreds of non-branded HTC Desire users on the Orange network will testify. When Orange say this in an official capacity it makes me SOOO angry because (a) they are lying, and (b) they prove that they think their customers are complete technophobic idiots.

I am not "required" to have "branding on my phone", as Orange claim. I can buy a Desire from Carphone Warehouse and FroYo will work on Orange. I can debrand my phone myself and FroYo will still work on Orange!

So, after considering all the facts (over several weeks while waiting for 2.2), I have come to the only logical conclusion: Orange need time to install their crappy game demos and useless apps on an OS that already works, and any testing done is not to ensure that FroYo is compatible with the network, but to make sure that their own crapwear is compatible with the network (and FroYo, AND the Desire!)

This rant isn't aimed at Xavier, but at Orange as a company for failing to understand the needs and wishes (and intelligence) of today's smartphone users.

I have voiced my opinion to orange by email and over the phone about the crapware that they install and have never had an answer.

I mean if you want to install game demos at least make it so the customer can uninstall them if they don't want them (and let's face it, nobody does). Such a brilliant phone ruined by orange branding.

The only thing I could do was to install LauncherPro to hide the orange apps.

I have decided when my contract ends I am either going to go on another network or if I do go with orange I will be getting a non-branded phone from somewhere like carphone warhouse.

Sorry orange but you ruin decent phones as far as I am concerned!

Why do you install these crap demo's etc???????

.... and why the heck on earth haven I just not yet got my Froyo update? Seems the time has come for me indeed too to do a lil bit of polishing on the bloody CV. Oh....about time though... got really good stuff to add on, "EXTENSIVE Orange UK Googling knowledge and Experience!" :))

It's rolling out across the UK now.. Try manually checking for the update.
