HTC Desire HD vs IPhone4?

I am looking to buy a new phone and have researched extensively. I thought I'd post my research and thought processes here.

I am trying to choose between an iPhone 4 and a HTC Desire HD. In truth I want to get an Android phone but also want to consider the Apple.

Here's what I have learnt about the Desire HD vs the Iphone4:

Plus points for the iPhone 4 vs HTC Desire HD:

1. iPhone 4 has the best screen on the market (as of 22-10-2010 - Galaxy S is the nearest contender)
2. iPhone 4 has a 3 axis giro whereas there's only one axis on the Desire HD with G-Sensor.
3. iPhone 4 currently has more apps in its store (as of 22-10-2010)
4. iPhone 4 has a front facing camera
5. Iphone 4 has a dedicated button for taking a photo or recording a video on the side of the device whereas the the Desire HD has no buttons and you have to use the screen.
6. The iphone 4 can be docked into a cradle for sync with iTunes and charging. The Desire can't do this because of the Micro USB and 3mm jack on the bottom.
7. My research on Google says that the sound output through the 3mm jack and the speaker is the best on the iPhone 4.

Plus points for the Desire HD vs the iPhone 4:

1. The Desire HD looks like it will be free on 24 month contract for about

Couple things. First of all, the 8MP camera on the Desire will not be better than the iPhone's camera. HTC puts 8MPs on their cameras as a marketing ploy. The rest of the cameras hardware doesnt measure up.

With that being said, I'd choose almost any android phone over an iPhone... and the Desire HD looks amaaaaaaazing.

The Desire HD DOES have text-to-speech.

Also about the iPhone being smoother. Yes this is true, but only because of GPU acceleration that is implemented on the iPhone (and Galaxy S for that matter). GPU acceleration has been rumored to be a feature of Gingerbread which the Desire HD will probably get.

will you really keep a phone for 24 months??? Mine lasts about 6 months before I upgrade.

Since October 09 Ive had the Nokia N900, Desire and have the HD on pre-order. I've never considered any iphone as overall the desire is a better package.

I also believe the market will continue to grow. So what - apple are ahead in this area. Most apps are nonsense though. The ones you really need are available on the android market.

I love my desire and can't wait til oct for the HD to arrive.

Yes gingerbread might speed it up, but as it is at the moment we don't know.

With that said I didn't mean to imply it was a huge difference, from what I have seen the Galaxy is only a fraction slower than the iPhone, and you would really only notice if you compared the two directly. The desire HD from what I have heard looks to be almost as smooth as the Galaxy S so I wouldn't worry about it too much, I just thought I'd point it out for what it was worth.

this statistic is a mute-point

The term you mean is actually "moot point"

I was gonna mention pretty much exactly what everyone else has already said...But I can add that if you use the app Mixzing for playing music, the sound quality is supposed to be much better than the iphone. And being able to add widgets to your Android desktop is a huge reason for choosing Android over iOS.

This is a plus for the Desire HD. You don't need to buy any expansive accessory to sync or charge your phone and you can use any MP3 player software on your computer.

5. Iphone 4 has a dedicated button for taking a photo or recording a video on the side of the device whereas the the Desire HD has no buttons and you have to use the screen.
Maybe, but the Desire HD has much more useful buttons (back, home and menu are all useful)

the iphone is still MORE EXPENSIVE than the DHD even though it has a much smaller screen.
the DHD has a much bigger screen so if you like to watch movies / surf net on your mobile then get the DHD.

how many apps do u need really?
we can safely assume now that any app for iphone will come to android and vice versa.
although apple can keep their iPooLog app for all i care :)

Hi, I've been doing some research of my own, I had both the iPhone 4, the HTC Desire HD (DHD) and the Samsung Galaxy S (SGS) in play.

First shootout was iPhone or not. Basically the iPhone 4 lost because of the iOS' lack of home screen widgets (I'm an addict to widgets and a personalized homescreen in general), google maps navigation, and other google products exclusive to the android OS. It also lost because I don't want bad signal performance, and I don't want a bumper either.

So it is down to DHD vs. SGS, and I tell you now, I haven't decided yet, but here goes:

SGS wins over DHD on:
- Super AMOLED screen (no need to say more)
- Gorilla Glas protects the screen
- Batterylife (SGS is almost on par with iPhone 4, and the DHD have a smaller battery, and the talktime and standby time according to htc.com is a lot less than that of the SGS).
- Camera performance (according to GSMarena it beats iPhone 4)
- It comes preloaded with swype. I would just looooooove to swype :)
- 119 gram vs 164 gram of the DHD
- SGS is big but slim. DHD might be just a tad too big.

DHD wins over Galaxy S:
- Better build quality (no plastic)
- Generally more pretty
- HTC Sense owns Touchwiz 3.0
- Locations (preloaded maps etc.)
- HTCsense.com
- It might be bigger in the pocket, but the screen is bigger to look at :)
- DLNA support

There are a lot of differences between these two phones, but the above mentioned ones is the ones I say make a difference for me.

I do not take into consideration the bugs with the SGS lag and its GPS problems, because I expect those to be fixed, and also its getting the Froyo before I need to purchase (Am getting the phone 1st of January, but have to decide/order now, its a company phone).

I tend to lean towards the DHD, but batterylife is a big showstopper for me, if it can't last a full day, without me worrying wether it will die on me or not.

So in the end which is the best phone?
I'm 15 and I really wanted to get the iphone 4, but then the DHD came out and im now waiting for it to hit stores so i can get my hands on one. The thing is im not a real good techy, i don't know what each "3 axis grio" means; therefore I've just been intaking whatever other people have been saying and trying to understand it. What about both screens? Which one is better? How bout its smoothness?
Thanks Heaps
So please the more help the better.

Desire screen is larger. iPhone 4 screen is amazing.
iPhone apps are better. Partly because it has been around longer, partly because iPhone devs could always be assured of large amounts of storage/run space for their apps so they could make them more full featured. Also much more likely revenue path for devs on iPhone.
More apps do matter. More apps means people have more options for whatever they are particularly interested in.
iPhone has much better usage of media through collection and syncing via iTunes. Podcasts, music, books, apps, all through one interface. Google has a lot of work to do here.
iPhone interface and apps are much more consistent. Google appears to be working on this with Gingerbread.
iPhone build quality and customer service is far superior.
The Desire HD is not available yet but price is almost certain to be a wash unless you buy a 32GB iPhone. Built in memory/storage is superior to SD card.
It's too early to say for sure with this phone but it is likely the iPhone 4 will have better battery life.
Desire has much more customization but much Android customization is needed because of the inferior UI. Personally I use Launcher Pro with no widgets because they suck up cpu and battery for little gain.
If you want to hack your phone the Desire will do some pretty amazing things and that is why I have an Android phone and an iPhone 4. A non hacked Android phone would be of no interest to me at all. On the other hand I feel no need to jailbreak my iPhone 4. It's great just as it is.
iPhone also has GPS based navigation and there are many mapping apps, far more than what is available on Android.
iPhone has Airplay to stream for PC/Mac to whatever. Also lots of apps for streaming video of any kind form PC/Mac.
Multi-touch on iPhone is a better implementation because Apple just has better code.

@snookie, Your narrow minded view should not be a.source of advice to someone seeking a phone. All you did was stated your individual liking of the iPhone, yes its a good phone but its nowhere superior than the high end smart phones that are out now. All phones have issues including the iPhone and just because you like how its done on the iPhone doesn't mean its bad on a Android phone, its all a individual preference.

So false. Large android apps put data on the SD card since the beggining. Only the main executable and config files are in the main memory.
Also much more likely revenue path for devs on iPhone.

Many people would disagree. Not being tied to iTunes is a big plus. Just put a MP3 file as you would on a USB key drive.

This one, especially customer service and support, I have to agree.

And how is not being able to upgrade storage any "superior"?

You are probably right, but don't forget that batteries do not last forever. At least with android phones you can change it.
Desire has much more customization but much Android customization is needed because of the inferior UI. Personally I use Launcher Pro with no widgets because they suck up cpu and battery for little gain.

Jailbreaking an iPhone is much more needed than "hacking" (I guess you meant rooting) an android phone since many feature which are standard in android, such as being able to wifi tether or to install apps not in the main market, requiert jailbreak on iPhone.
iPhone also has GPS based navigation and there are many mapping apps, far more than what is available on Android.
This one is a big plus for Android, really. It has Google Navigation built in and free. And it is arguably better than any paid app. I tried copilot live. Beside for the pre-downloaded maps advantage, it sucks compared to google because it's harder to search for something.
I don't think there is any free navigation app for iPhone which is as good.
iPhone has Airplay to stream for PC/Mac to whatever. Also lots of apps for streaming video of any kind form PC/Mac.
So does android. On the Galaxy S, for example, you can stream XviD AVIs, H264 MKVs, etc. On the iPhone you sometimes need to re-encode according to Apple's will.
Multi-touch on iPhone is a better implementation because Apple just has better code.
Well you don't know since even if you looked at Android's code (which I doubt) you didn't look at iOS' since you can't.

Not so. There are many many reports of people swapping their iphones out sometimes as many as 11 times. Many reports of overheating, microphone not working, bluetooth still not working, proximity sensors not working.

The Desire HD is not available yet but price is almost certain to be a wash unless you buy a 32GB iPhone. Built in memory/storage is superior to SD card..
lol, until you want to expand it

not according to the many posters on the apple discussion forum

Multi-touch on iPhone is a better implementation because Apple just has better code.

Actually apple code sucks big time. iOS4.1 STILL doesn't fix the proximity sensor issue, the iphone is without doubt, apple's buggiest, crashiest, not workiest, (prettiest) and most useles PHONE ever. Yes, the apps are amazing, yes the screen is great, but the PHONE sucks the grand wazoo - it's a horrible PHONE. And of course when you drop it, (as you will), you can't just replace the front glass - the whole screen and digitizer has to be replaced ($199) - it's a testament to form over function

I think its really unfair to compare one phone against another considering one hasn't actually hit the market yet.

Also if you look at it from a marketing point of view, you will notice that both phones are aimed for different markets.

The iPhone is in mind for the out of box user experience. Nobody can deny it looks nice (what apple product doesn't these days) and it just works. People who buy this want it for fashion and for something simple and just works.

Desire HD and most other android phones for that matter are the total opposite. Freedom to have it you way with no restrictions like Apple has.

Maybe I look at it from a marketing view, but being realistic, as long as it looks nice and people can make calls and texts, take photos and playback music, people are generally happy..

Me, i'm the old fashion type, a phone is a phone, its nice to have the features but being realistic, if i want to take a photo, i'll bring a proper camera. If i want to play music, i'll have a proper MP3 player with proper headphones..you get what im saying...

I've already discounted the iPhone 4, far too expensive. The DHD is excellent for the price you can buy it, although all this faffing around with the release date has got me interested in the Samsung Galaxy S.

That said, I'll probably stick with the DHD, the Sense UI is what got me interested in getting an Android phone in the first place

EDIT: After watching the Samsung Galaxy S reviews, it's the Desire HD for me
