Root Trying to root froyo OTA.. assistance?

I tried the easy root instructions here:

How to: Root DROID X Running Official Android 2.2 - Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog

when the bat was running, it kept telling me that adb was not a valid command.

The entire process only took 30 seconds or so.

I suspect adb is not installed, or the sdk is not installed completely. My phone still is on, and appears normal, and is still plugged into the pc.

How can I check to see if it is indeed rooted, and if not, how to I install adb (link?) so it does root properly?

Ok, missed the part where you copy do root for windows archive files to sdk tools

did that now, and the batch is running. only things its done so far, is started the deamon successfully

but 4 minutes later, not updates.

Trying again after installing drivers that worked for someone else.

Ok, it appears to have completed, and I have superuser permissions in my apps. If I run it however, its blank, and menu doesn;t appear to do anything.

When you run superuser, should you see it do something other then just display a black screen?

not until you grant something (ie wireless teather) superuser permissions which it should ask for when you open that app.... do that then go back and look in there

Woot! Everythings working fine, and I have OTA rooted now.

Now to grab all those nifty utilities everyone keeps talking about.

Is there a list anywhere of applications that always run in the background that we might want to uninstall? I know blockbuster and vz navigator will be hitting the trash bin soon.

you could just install a custom rom that has the bloatware removed and is deodexed so you can theme if you choose. look into rom manager. i'm using fly x with the blackmodz status bar personally and have been loving it. there are plenty of threads on here about it.

What were the drivers that worked? I cannot get USB Debugging to run while in PC mode. I uninstalled the drivers I had and made sure to plug in the phone with USB Debugging OFF so that it could load the device and I keep getting root failed. I assumed it was because of the lack of USB Debugging in PC Mode.

If you read the comments, the 4.7.1 drivers were what worked. I also followed someone else's tip, shutting down the verison software when it opened in a browser, and switched between pc mode and media mode as well, to make sure it didn;t fall asleep.. I think I had to try it 4 times before it took.

I haven't seen anyone mention anywhere that ota can be deodexed yet, and saw warnings about not using themes yet.

What comments should I be reading as I saw no mention of the 4.7.1 drivers being the ones that worked anywhere in this thread?.? I posed the question in this thread and after re-reading, I still don't see anywhere that 4.7.1 drivers were what worked. Could you please send the link to the specific comment being made in this thread?

I read above where you said you were going to try some drivers that worked for someone else. I guess I should have known you meant 4.7.1 drivers. Thanks for setting me straight.

Go to my first post.

Follow the link in that post.

Scroll down to read the comments.. the very first comment you see is one with the link to the proper working drivers. Continue to read the comments.. you'll see someone ask, and then also confirm that the 4.7.1 drivers listed in that first comment are what you want installed.

The reason I direct you there, is because all the comments there cover mistakes you might make, and tips you should read.

Thank you Garee, but that was where and why I was asking. I have read that link and have been using the 4.7.1 and cannot get the USB Debugging to load during PC or Media mode. A few comments later you mentioned using drivers that worked for someone else, thus the confusion and question as to what drivers you used. This thing should root like "that" and I have never had an issue like the one I'm having with this method and it seems so incredibly simple, it's driving me nuts.

I have downloaded both zip files. If you have already plugged your phone into the computer before to charge it will the drivers already be installed?

Will someone please talk me through this so I can do it? I am horrified that I will do something wrong and really want to learn how to do this. Both zips have been downloaded, just not sure where to go from here...

The installer tells you it was successful. If you have superuser, then yes you should be rooted. read the stickied root thread here for what you can now do. Do NOT install any themes yet! Heed the warning posts here about that.

Thanks for the advice. What about deodexing? What does that do? Do I need to do it?

I really want the black status bar, hence the main reason for rooting. Do you know how I go about doing that?
