Root 2.2 root and 3.0

Ok, so i bought my droid x off Craigslist that had the original leaked 2.2 on it. I SBF'ed back to "the_gift" or hopefully the official 2.1 and got the 2.2 OTA.

Previously on 2.1 i had done the 1 click universal androot ONLY to rename bloatware to "bak." Now i want to do the same and i realize i can use the D2 method or xda-developers - View Single Post - Easier 1-2-3 Droid 2 Root for Windows and Linux (and soon Mac) which is almost a 1 click root with some SDK download or something.

My question is, since the newly signed bootloader is locked and there is no true 2.2 SBF, is the only risk of rooting the 2.2 OTA that if the official 2.2 SBF isn't obtained before 3.0 comes out then all the people rooting their 2.2 OTA will NOT GET 3.0???

Because with my 2.1 root i literally clicked a button and ROOT and then i clicked the same button and STOCK. But if i do this 2.2 root method there is currently no way to get back to STOCK OTA (no ninja super user permission) and so i would not be able to get 3.0.

Obviously, 3.0 won't come out until probably late December at the EARLIEST and who knows if Droid X will get it (even though it likely should considering it's in the top 2 or 3 android phones hardware wise currently). So i could root now and have the most updated Droid X WITH the stupid bloatware gone for a good 3 months or so.

But i'll be honest, i don't even know if that's worth it since 3.0 sounds so awesome. So can anyone answer my one question for me please? If i root my 2.2 OTA is there the possibility i might never get back to STOCK 2.2 and hence may never get another official Motorola update?

And that doesn't even take into consideration if Moto decides to send out some small patch with a few fixes in the meantime. That would suck not to get that.

That's the reason I'm holding off on rooting. I will wait until someone comes up with a one click unrooting method.

I followed the identical path as you. I actually didn't see the root batch file and did it "by hand". I'd figure though, there must be a procedure to reverse things and unroot. Is there not?

And 3.0 in late December?! That's definitely a pipe dream. Didn't Froyo go final in early August. So that means it took Motorola about 7 weeks to push it to us.

I don't think 3.0 is anywhere close to final yet, so figure probably 2 months from the time it is final. That's if we even ever get 3.0 at all.

Right now, if Moto doesn't give us 3.0, people on 2.2 OTA have no path to 3.0 ROMs because we are still locked up with the new bootloader.

Either way, I'd say you might as well just root 2.2. I'd be very surprised if there's not a way to restore your phone so that you can get the next OTA.

Also, there easily could be an OTA between 2.2 and 3.0 to fix some bugs just as there was an OTA between 2.1 and 2.2.

I'm holding off for now but i think 3.0 before year end was officially announced by Google. But if you mean that it won't make it to the droid x until a couple months after you are probably right. Google might have 1 phone get 3.0 by Dec. 31st and the rest wait for a couple months.

Anyways, i'm holding off on root until there is a way to get back to the official 2.2 so i can get any other OTA Motorola might push out.

there is an sbf that will take your /system back to stock. As long as you dont mess with other stuff that will get you back just fine.

1 click unroot is a bit of a misnomer. It does unroot you but it does not take you back to stock unless it actually flashes a stock update.zip(Dont know of any for the DX that will work like that) or an sbf file. The apps like universal androot that have an unroot button only remove the items that they put in place so if you made other changes you wont be put back to stock.

I think I took the August time frame as when the Nexus One got Froyo. That's really "final". Or did Nexus One get it sooner than that?

So if people who had 2.1 rooted got the OTA, why the concern about being able to unroot?

froyo went final in like march or april. we didnt get it til 6 months later. the x wont see it til early next year at the very earliest. i think it's far too early to make decisions based on how it will affect gingerbread.

Froyo was officially detailed at google i/o on May 20th. The Froyo source didnt officially get released until 6/23/10. Did motorola have it before that. Sure they did but who knows how much sooner. On the up side they will have Gingerbread source well before its officially released too.

There's also Honeycomb, which is after Gingerbread. There is rumor that Gingerbread would be more of a update to froyo, and Honeycomb will have some major changes.

the nexus got several versions of froyo. They got the initial release a little earlier, but got several MRs after the initial release. I would say froyo was really "final" after that last MR.

I was under the impression that gingerbread would have the big UI overhaul and honeycomb was going to bring tablet support.

Well, I was talking about waiting to see if/when Motorola decides to fix the many bugs that people have been reporting. I figured it takes at least a month or two to find, fix and retest bugs and I don't know what they plan to do to the rooted phones next release (so many DX phones got bricked this release) so I think it's safer for me to wait.
