Root Not sure if it's a ROM, Kernel, or just my dang phone (Address book FC)

I recently loaded Baked Snack 1.7 on my phone as my first custom ROM - before that I had rooted stock Froyo. I tried two Baked Snack kernels and now have KingsxKlick bfs #9.

So I have all these variables and now I have a weird problem - my address book is force-closing on me every time I try to create a new contact. I haven't created a new contact in awhile, so I have no idea whether this could be related to my new ROM or kernel, or if it's a problem with the address book itself. I have had no other problems since installing the ROM and kernel.

I can input the new number for the contact, but when I try to name the contact it says it has encountered an error and needs to stop. This is the stock HTC People app, and I have tried it creating the contact as a regular phone contact and as a Google contact. No dice.

I've also tried a battery pull, clearing cache, the basics.

Any thoughts, guys? I met a cute boy and I REALLY need to save his number.

run fix permissions in ROM manager, and reboot..
Not ALL cute guys are worth calling back!

Nope, didn't work :( Boo.

Maybe the Address Book gods are trying to tell me something about this guy?

Do you think this could be caused by something in the kernel or even the ROM? I'll reflash either one of them if it's something that might help...

Did you try clearing the phonebook's data? I mean if its synched to your google account, it would just reload it...

There are problems with the Camera app that causes force closes on certain roms, which are resolved by clearing data. Try it. :)

Here's the exact error message I should have posted first:

"The application People (process com.android.htccontacts) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."

Then I get the options to force close or report.

So I cleared the data from People (via Settings > Applications > Manage Applications) and rebooted, still nothing. I don't see anywhere I have access to something called com.android.htccontacts because it's not in the application list.

Thanks for the ideas, guys! I'd appreciate any other thoughts on what I should try.

i never tried baked snack kernels, so I cant speak to them..

I know it sounds silly, but fix the permissions again, clean your cache with Cache mate, reboot, then try..let the phone settle down after booting before you try.
You might want to grab Root Explorer; its 2 bucks, and you can always return it, but it will let you see ALL files everywhere, including your /system directory if you need to
Are you using ADW launcher or Launcher pro, or straight sense?

1. Did you wipe cache, dalvik-cache and full wipe before flashing?
2. did you use titanium backup to restore things?
This can sometimes cause fc issues. Try clearing data for contacts storage, contacts sync adapter and see if that helps

1. Yes, yes and yes. Twice each.
2. Yes, for apps and data. Then restored contacts via Google.

Contacts storage has been cleared, Google un-synced.

Wait are you trying to the htc people widget with launcher pro? Is that even compatible?

Have you tried adding the contact through your pc or mac to gmail.com and then just sync your phonebook? I know this won't fix your force close problem but It may at least let you save the contact for now.

No, I'm not using the widget. This is just the regular old phone book that's causing a problem.

battery pull first?

x2 :(

I just ran a nandroid and am reflashing a Baked kernel now. I'm going to try and get into Titanium one more time before I do a full wipe on this thing. Blerg.

UPDATE:
Nandroid done. Cache partition and dalvik cache wiped twice each. Kings Kernel replaced with Baked Snack kernel and system rebooted.

Got the touchscreen responsiveness back and Titanium worked fine for another backup. Tried to save the phone number with both LauncherPro and with HTC Sense, and still a no-go on both. I suppose I could just write the guy's number down for now, right?

lol, why don't you just add the contact to your gmail over the internet.

I did :)

Downloading Baked Snack 1.8 now and even though the dev says it's not required, I'm doing a full wipe of everything. The ROM is based off the latest OTA update so maybe that will help a little bit.

UPDATE: IT WORKS!
Baked Snack 1.8 is running after full wipe of partition, dalvik, and factory reset. Restored apps ONLY (no data) via Titanium Backup. I'm still using LauncherPro and all the same other apps as before - and no more force close on the address book!

Hooray!

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions.
