Bye bye Captivate

I just wanted to say thanks to all of those helpful members on here that helped me get my phone somewhat operable over the past 3 weeks.

I have concluded though, that this phoen - at best - is an incomplete product. It has the most potential of any phone I've ever had. It's not limited by the app store, and not so open that it's prone to viruses. It has great features (screen, swipe, etc) and some terrible features (email sucks, gps, etc) and overall my experience has been somewhat positive.

I listed my phone on ebay two days ago and today it will sell for close to $400. At that amount of money, I can afford the $399 for the iPhone 4G and while I hate the app store, I love that this phone is a polished product.

If Android keeps going the way they are, I have no doubt that I'll be back. But until then I need something better at email, as my job revolves around it.

Well, it's not the Andoird problem. This phone has a lot of issues because of Samsung. It doesn't have anything to do with Android OS itself.

I think it's a bit premature to blame this users problems on Samsung. It may simply have been a defective phone.

I do agree that it's not Android.

Don't get me wrong, as the owner of several smartphones, of various brands, I'm _not_ advocating for Samsung. However I will say that of all the Samsung phones I've had, this is far and away their best to date.

I've got _three_ Captivates in my family and each of them performs quite well. The updates all went smoothly, and for Samsungs (self described) first serious effort in the Android arena they've done pretty well.

Oh sure, they've certainly tarnished their reputation in the past for not staying on top of customer support, or providing the timely and proper drivers, software updates and the like. However I believe that every company deserves to be evaluated on what they are _currently_ doing as opposed to what is now past history.

My Droid X is also a very good smartphone, and based on public opinion one of the top rated products. It also happens to have had some issues, nothing that I've haven't' sorted out, yet it's the nature a device with a dynamic young OS.

Next up is my iPhone 4, a phone that is well regarded for it's refinement and stellar design. And yet look at the Antenna debacle, the proximity sensor issues and on and on. Say what you will (and I'm not advocating for Apple either) but the iPhone 4 is a pretty good phone as well.

So to my point...

Before we as enthusiasts, condemn a certain phone / model / company, I think it's reasonable to give them the benefit of the doubt over a certain period of time to see if they are indeed changing, improving and providing the healthy level of competition that makes all phones better.

Personally I think the Android platform is the best thing that ever happened to Apple, and the industry for that matter. In Apples case, it's just the kick in the ass they needed to get off their high horse and get serious about innovating, not just talking about it.

Then months of denial from Apple, then begrudging admittance from them, offers of a FREE rubberband to correct it, then weeks and weeks of Steve Jobs, slamming other phones, in an attempt to prop up his.

Oh... never mind that your 4g will be replaced in May.

I think it's worse with android. With the iPhone once a year a new version comes out that makes you want it. With android new phones are coming out near weekly now. I understand that these aren't all updated versions of the phone you own but damn there's enough to make you jealous.

Too bad...must suck to be a sheeple. I use my email every day and I've had no issues at all.

Make sure you test out the proximity sensor on the IP4 in the store, or you will be like my roommate who's on his fifth one. Also, make sure the home button isn't loose or doesn't wiggle, and that the vibrate toggle switch actually does what it's supposed to.

No mass-produced device is completely free of defects, as we have seen in this and every forum known to man.

So (I'm assuming) you spent $200 to upgrade to the Captivate, and if you sell it for $400 then you're really only $200 ahead in which all the iPhone4's I've seen on ebay are about $600-$800. So instead of spending $200 to upgrade to a iPhone4 you'll spend $400.

If you're within the 30 days just take it back! I'm guessing you're not or you wouldn't be going through all of this trouble. Maybe upgrading to the iPhone4 is $400. I'm not 100% sure.

GPS doesn't even bother me. I just wish the phone had an LED flash, and the pictures looked a little better once you get them on your computer and after from the ridiculously great AMOLED screen.

I second that all he did was thank the forum. The truth is after this so called update and the other posts. Im surprised that more Captives are not on e-bay or C-list. Either way they will be giving them away free when you buy the next new phone. Me I want out of At&trash altogether.

i agree the op was just thanking, i think people were flying off the hook because untill about a month ago all it was on here was people talking about returning/selling the phones, and normally I would have just responded that this be merged into this thread: http://androidforums.com/samsung-captivate/145734-official-taking-back-captivate-thread.html . but thats more than a month old now so i can see why someone wouldnt see it ( and he's not taking it back as much as selling it )

anyway, good luck on your endevours, the only thing that saddens me is that so many of you guys are having problems that it means my (and my co-workers) perfectly working captivates wont see updates as quick due to bad sales/returns. ours works great but i feel that its going to get a bad rep of being a bad phone, odd to think that we both got great ones (on launch day, from entirely different areas) but regardless, goodbye op, enjoy your iPhone 4 (the device i sold to get the captivate)

I think getting a choice of a free case is not a bad deal at all. On my wife's iPhone 4 no matter how I hold it, I can't get the issues people are whining about, but I live in an area with good coverage. Nevertheless, she got to choose from a number of free cases. Not a bad solution.

I WISH that the GPS issues on the captivate could be solved by something as straightforward as a "free rubberband." As much as you may want to fault Apple, they made good on their mistake (more or less). Samsung has thus far not done jack other than make promises.

some of the attacks are unnecessary and rude.

having had the iPhone 4 my biggest complaint was itunes. I loved it for the short time I had it.

I have a few small complaints about the phone. but if Apple didn't require itunes for everything I would still have it to this day.

the Android fanboys are equally as bad as Apple fanboys when it comes to defending their phone and trashing another.

I'm contemplating whether to either return or exchange my Captivate this weekend since my 30 days are just about up and the GPS still isn't working correctly. The night of the update it worked incredibly then the next morning it refused to lock again and has been refusing all week. Only problem is that the phone works perfectly otherwise so I don't want to risk getting a Captivate with other issues and my other option is an iPhone 4 which doesn't appeal to me at all.

I could return my phone and wait for them to work out the kinks but can I really go back to my five year old Sony Ericsson??

In the end I'll probably keep it and hope Samsung takes another whack at fixing the GPS.

I don't mind the rude comments. Everyone has an opinion . Got my iphone last night and oddly enough got to the car, was testing it, realized it had a problem and took it back and exchanged it immediately. I thought it was funny.

Sadly, after the OTA update bricked my first Captivate (which worked great, even GPS), the 2 Captivates I had since then have been nothing but trouble. GPS does not work what-so-ever. The phone constantly has 10-12 satellites in view but does not lock onto a singe one (all with a signal strength of 42.0 down to 12.0). I have tried both spirent-lcs.com and supl.google.com.

I have until Tuesday to decide if I'm keeping it or not. I'm thinking of just returning it. Not sure if I will get another phone now as I don't really want an iPhone.

It is incredibly small yet I would definitely say it
Does somethings better than my captivate.

I.e. gps and my signal does not drop when I hold it
