Root beginner needs help with root options

Hi All,

Before I begin I have done some reading regarding rooting my HTC Evo but I am still unsure as to if I need it/want it. Here is what I essentially am looking for and hopefully you guys can tell me if i need to root to achieve it and if so which ROM to install to get those requirements.

requirements:
-Froyo
-wireless tethering for free
-30 fps cap removed

I know there are probably some threads covering parts of this or even all of it but I have been overwhelmed with all the rooting reading online.

Root using UnrEVOked 3.21 its the easiest for someone that is nervous about doing it. When you run unrevoked your phone will be pretty much the same as it is now but will be "unlocked". Once you have run the root process you can do a nandroid backup (think ghost image) that will allow you to bring your phone back to the first unrevoked state.

you can then try some of the sense based ROMS "Baked Snack" is pretty stable and it will let you do the things you are looking to do. The tether app will even be installed on your SD card in an "app" folder, all you need to do is install it if you want it.

First run unrevoked, get that part down, then I would head over to XDA forums or to bakedsnack.com to read up on some ROMs.

is that unrevoked you speak of the soft root? I have already done this to get the wireless tether.

I did some reading and the sticky provided step by step instructions to root so I feel comfortable doing that.

Is nand unlocking required? I didn't seem to grasp the purpose of that. Is it required to create a Nandroid?

I was looking at the Fresh 3.2 then upgrading it to 3.3. Does that have the Sense skin on it?

So let me get this straight. Unrevoked 3.21 is an exe file that I just run from my pc and it does everything I need it to do and from there I can create nandroids and load custom ROMs as long as they are an image and not an archive?

I have not updated my phone at all since release day so that I could still use the one click soft root which gave me access to wireless tether.

I am not intimidated to do the root method as described here http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-proof-root-guide-nand-unlock-adb-update.html up to step 35. That seems extremely straight forward. So I am just wondering what the differences are between this laborious method vs the unrevoked 3.21.

oh and is the radio flash really necessary, i dont have any issues with 4g or 3g so is that still recommended to do?

-download hboot drivers
-save unrevoked to your SD card
-ran unrevoked app
-sat back for about 5 minutes while it did its thing.

if this is about what you did then you hould be fully rooted.

The nandroid part is so that you can recover from any bad installations. You might as well consider it neccessary unless your the type that cuts off that "do not remove" tag on your mattress.

when you boot into H-Boot you should see the S-Off at the top of the screen. If you have that you are good to go.

I guess I dont get what I did wrong.

I did the most current unrevoked method, installed the proper drivers and uninstalled HTC sync. the first time i did it it said root didnt work but that it happens sometimes, i tried it again and it seemed to work just fine. I do see the ninja super user even after I deleted the unrevoked app that I had since day 1 and did a fresh restart. any ideas. Does it matter if i am on the same firmware version as it shipped with on Jun 4th release date?

I think unrevoked 3.2x only works on Android 2.2. So if you are still on 2.1, you have to upgrade to froyo (2.2) first, and then run it.

wow so after trying to install froyo i get "signature verification aborted" "installation aborted"

not finding too much on it online other than people saying to removed the .zip extension but I have windows showing file extensions and if i removed it then it is not associated with anything so this is not the problem for me. any idea?

Easiest way to root and achieve everything you want now is:
1) Do all the OTAs to get the latest updates
2) Download unrevoked 3.21 to your computer and run it (follow the instructions carefully drivers etc)
3) install Wireless tether 2.0.5 pre9

Done.

I'd suggest making a nandroid backup at this point, then start doing more customizations as needed. Remove bloatware with titanium backup etc..

Try doing a hard reset, then try the updates.

wireless tether 2.05 from android market. make sure to allow third party apps

eye baller, i did a hard reset and still no updates? I think the problem is that I started the root process and loaded the PC36IMG.zip file and my phone was then cleared and looked stock. I tried to update a rom but I guess i was missing the part with the update.zip file. I will try that and then hopefully be able to load a ROM.
