Upgrade from Eris to Droid x?

Hey everyone,

So i got fed up with my music player constantly skipping/phone lag on my Eris and got a VZW manager to approve a early upgrade for me. I was thinking should I go with the Droid X? I wanted some current owner's opinions before I drop $200 on it.

Currently I mainly use my phone for:

1. Texting- I send hundreds of texts a day.

2. Web Surfing- I spend a lot of time on-line google, news..etc

3. Picture taking- I love to snap photos of friends and travels.

4. Talking- I maybe use 500 min a month if that. I text a lot due to working in a call center.

5. Mp3 player- i use my phone in the car and at work so i can have good music rather than the crap work plays on the speakers to listen to.

Considering these points do you think it would be wise to choose the X?

All input is welcome and appreciated.

I came from the Eris also and have never regretted doing so.

1. Texting - I had lag issues with the Eris. Never a problem on the X with Swype or MultiTouch.

2. Web - The 4.3" screen is a dream compared to the Eris 3.2" screen. Also, smooth scrolling and much better/easier link selection than on the Eris.

3. Camera - I'm still not impressed with the X's camera. Image quality is as good as the Eris, but I was expecting more. See my TwitPic stream for comparisons. Anything after the photo of my Droid X box was taken with the Droid X (except the deer, bear and Angry Bird photos). The 720p movie capture is a technical feature. Yes it's 720p resolution, but it's not the 720p quality/clarity you might be expecting.

4. Talking - I had weak signal issues with the Eris. A few with the Droid X, but definitely better than the Eris. I hated the Eris dialer. I would constantly redial recent callers by accident when on the screen. Not an issue with the Droid X.

5. Music - Haven't used music player too much on the X. The times I have used it, it's worked fine (both earbuds and speaker). Speaker may be slightly louder than on the Eris, but not much. Sound quality is same, but what do you expect from a dime sized speaker. FM radio is a plus the Eris didn't have! But if your earbuds loose connection for a split second, it will throw you out of the FM radio app.

I never had an Eris, but I can give you some pros and cons (IMO)

Pros

-Best signal and GPS reception of any phone I currently have (I have 5)
-Screen is PERFECT for surfing
-Swype is stupid good
-The camera is good, but if you are looking to replace a point and shoot, I haven't found a phone that can do it as effortlessly as my 10mp. It's a great fill-in for taking unexpected pics, though. Most are.
-Music player is fine. I use doubletwist or rockplayer, but the stock one is fine and doesn't skip at all for me.
-Battery life seems really good. I average 4 hours of usage between 6am and 11pm and I usually make it (watching a move at lunch usually forces me to charge it by 8pm).
-Hardware is top notch. Very well designed (good construction, gorilla glass, smart placement of buttons)
-Best sound quality of any of my current phones. You can have your windows down or loud noise in the background and no one complains. Sound quality on my side isn't bad either.

Cons

-eFuse. If you like using different ROMs, the steps moto has taken will start to piss you off.
-Blur is in heavy competition for the crappiest UI skin with Samsung, apparently. You will be buying widgets to replace the ones that Moto puts stock.
-Delays on opening app lists. My DINC is quite fast at this, but this thing (which is overall faster) make me wait 10 seconds before it can build an app list. I dont mean the app drawer, just places where you want to add a shortcut or whatever.
-Buttons can be hard to press at times. And even swiping down the notification bar can be interesting if you are doing something else. 4.3 inches is a long way to travel (at least my GF says so! ;) )

If modding the phone is important to you, get an HTC. If it's not important, this is the phone you want.

I have had my X for just over a week now. I upgraded from the Eris. And I have to agree...it's a heck of a great phone! Leaps and bounds over the Eris. I was having similar issues to those mentioned (lag, etc.). But haven't noticed that so far with the X. Yes it's bigger but I believe it's also a bit thinner and very light weight (although not light enough to feel like a cheap phone). Definitely recommend the X. I'm lovin' mine!

Upgraded from an Eris here, too. Had major lag issues with the HTC. I only get minor hiccups with the X. 2.2 upgrade seems to increase speaker volume. Just to let you know for playing music. The camera's quality is average for a phone, but I love the panarama feature. The phone stitches together 5 (or 6) shots together to create a wide-angle shot. Works pretty well.

My wife went from an Eris to a Fascinate and loves it. The Fascinate is like a pumped up turbocharged Eris. It has a great camera, gorgeous 4" screen, and the build quality is good. Light does not equal cheap.

Check out the X as well as the Fascinate when you are in the store. The Fascinate will likely be in stock, the X on a short backorder status.

couldnt agree more, i thought a 8 mp camera i would notice the difference, i didnt, though i must say the X is by far better than the eris, i had one previously and got to upgrade to the X after a several months with the eris and some talkin to verizon reps that my pitbull sister took care of :p (dont judge me) she can talk her but off to reps and get what she wants, and she did for me, but i must say this is by far the best phone i have owned. and its been alot, not alot of android phones, i have had all blackberry phones minus the storm1 n 2 so im happy, and if you make this leap let us know, we would love to know what you pick :)

+1 on checking out the Fascinate also. Screens a little smaller, but the SuperAMOLED is the best looking screen on the market, absolutely gorgeous.

Battery life will be similar to the Eris (at least in my experience). There are some slight GPS issues at the moment. It's really a nice, beautiful sleek, fast. It's on the same level as the X and don't let anyone tell you differently, make sure you check it out.

First of all - I moved from the Eris to the DX and I'm glad I did, the phone is AWESOME compared to Eris...... except I miss the SenseUI really bad.

Blur just seems really klunky to use, but after reading a bit, I gave LauncherPro a try and it's a pretty good substitute. (I'll gladly take any tips on this point.)

You'll love the screen size and the speed will blow you away.

get another eris. best phone ever made. makes the x look like a giant rock with a camera button. heh. obviously kidding.

do you really even need to ask? verizon offered to nullify the contract you signed, and give you a nearly $600 phone for $200. my only question is, why dont you have an x in your hands yet?

i have both the x and the fascinate, and imho, for what you use it for, you need to go with the x. the x gets about 40% better battery life than the fascinate, the radio is better (my x is consistently 10dbm's better than the fascinate side by side), and it does all of the things you like to do beautifully.

do it. it'll be the best $200 phone decision you've ever made.

i agree. i just think people interpret those thin plastic snap-on backs as being cheap.the phone is really well made though. if it werent for the GPS issues, weaker radio, and less battery life, i would recommend it over the x. but now that verizon stores stock both, i have to say go with the x. unless, of course, you need 2 phones, then get the fascinate, as the BOGA is an awesome deal.
