Help recovery mode 2.2

I was trying to put my Inc into recovery mode on 2.2 and it vibrated 3 times and then completely died, lol, like the charging light went out and I couldn't get it to turn back on, did a battery pull and all was well, but tried it again and the same thing happened, any clue how to go into recovery? Also I want to reset my phone to default, is there another way instead of going thru recovery?

You were probably holding the up volume and power instead of the down volume and power. You need to pull the battery, then hold down volume and power.

Exactly. You were not putting it into recovery. Rather, you were entering Qualcomm Diagnostics.

When I try to get into Fastboot by pressing VOLUME UP and booting the phone, my phone instead buzzes three times and acts dead. What happened?
The S-OFF update also enables Qualcomm Diagnostics mode on your phone, which is entered by doing what you just did. You can exit this mode (and boot normally) by removing the battery and USB cable.

well I tried both ways, I'll try it again, it was kinda funny to completely kill the phone, I'm going to try that on my friends phone!
