Alas, I am leaving the EVO for the Epic

I was wondering if anyone else has had dropped call issues with their Evo? I love love love love my EVO but I cannot deal with the dropped calls. I've had Sprint for 8 years with damn near 30 different phones and I've been running at 89% call completion since I got it. This is my second Evo and Sprint I guess has taken on new policies of not satisfying the customer since retentions basically told me the old thing they could do for me is buy back my Evo for 125.....yeah, not happening. So I cancelled my line, selling my EVO on ebay as we speak, opened a new line and got the Epic. I finally got to play with it for the 2 hours I was sitting at the Sprint store the other day and I really liked it though it does seem a bit chincy and the 2.1 is disappointing since I really enjoyed having flash on my phone. Has anyone else used the EVO for an extended period of time and traded in for the EPIC? If so what was the biggest disappointment and improvements that you saw?

I forgot to mention that I even went so far as the purchase the Airave which improved service for all of my phones EXCEPT the Evo.

If anything my EVO is one of the better smartphones I've used as far as call quality and reception. If it's even dropping calls on an femtocell device then your EVO has serious issues.

EVO to Epic is a fairly universally accepted downgrade unless you just absolutely have to have the hardware keyboard.

I don't know but it seems strange to me that being your issue with the phone has a lot to due with the service in your area, why would you get another phone on the same provider?

I know the issue seems to be with just the phone itself as other devices have worked better than the EVO with the Airrave but what garauntee do you have that the EPIC will be better in this regard?

You should have tried the EPIC for 30 days before making the decision is really what I am saying.

I have had zero dropped calls with the EVO and it is the best phone I have ever had and even used as far as quality, reception, and lack of dropped calls and I have been on Sprint since the early Nextel days.

The Airrave didn't help? I have it and it's the only reason why I decided to stay with Sprint. It boosted my signal to full strength and I haven't had a dropped call in the last few weeks. It's like having a land line again. I love my Evo and I was previously an Iphone fan.

The building that houses my squadron is made out of lead walls...joking. But its hard to receive let alone hold a cell phone signal while in my squadron. I got my EVO in June, took that bad boy to work and I was surprised at how well the EVO holds onto calls in my building made of lead walls.

Actually that is an excellent point as dropped calls are not only a one way street, it vould very well be the other person's service, unless it's to landlines then there is no mistake about it.

I could be wrong, but my understanding is the Airrave is basically a localized signal that then travels through your Internet connection. If you are dropping calls next to it, there's something seriously wrong.

Yea... I've yet to drop a call where I have at least some signal...

If I drop a call, it's because there's literally butt fudge NO signal where I am. Three dead spots I can think of near my area... down the street, at my grandparents, and at one of my freind's houses. Other than that, I get at least 1-2 bars everywhere I go. If I need to, a phone call is always an option.

Also, it needs to be said for me, even since I had my Moment, these phones get WAY better signal pickup than my old Nextel flip brick. It'd drop signal in my room, my living room, at least 10 different areas around our area, and had no signal almost constantly at school.

I can tell when there's low signal though, because my battery runs hotter than usual in my phone, and it dies off faster. I.E. at work, the back room where I do all the fixing for furniture has metal walls. I get almost no, to no signal there. If I open the back doors, I get full 6 bars. While it's closed though, my battery dies off a little quicker than it should. I know full well why, but the reason I'm telling this long drag @#$ schpiel is to show how strong the radio in the Evo is. It works when it needs to, and won't leave you stranded out if you need to make a call; all depending on if there's actually signal available.

I have had Sprint since I was a HTC 6700 user and the EVO is the bet 'Phone' experience I have had. I do consulting work and there were a couple of locations that have always had terrible service and I was basically unreachable when I was working there. The problems at these two locations all but vanished as soon as I got my EVO. While it's unusual to get two bad devices in a row it is certainly possible and by the sound of it probable.

yeah.. I think Debra was unlucky to get 2 bad EVOs in a row.

but no-one has actually answered her request.. for other users that have moved on to the EPIC and how has it worked out for them.

I am curious too. I am trying to decided between the 2... I keep going back and forth. I still have time till my upgrade.. or just buy it out right from craigslist.

I can! I have had my Evo since launch day. I bought my wife the Epic on it's launch day. I have had nearly a month to get in depth with the Epic. Whatever people tell you about the screen, the processor, blah..blah..blah..there is SERIOUSLY no comparison to the Evo. Everything is more snappy on my Evo. And the screen?..size matters. You would not think .3 inches would make a difference, it does. The feel of Evo is solid. The Epic feels "plasticy" I guess would be a good term. If you like blueish tints to your screen, then you'll love the Epic. Maybe the only thing better is the camera, it does take nice pictures. The slider keyboard for me is a waste. I Swype twice as fast as I can ever type on it and I type 50 + wpm on a typewriter (full keyboard). I hope I don't jinx myself but to date I have had zero problems with my Evo. Took back my wife's original Epic because the capacitive buttons on the bottom didn't work right. Her replacement does just fine though. I'm not bias, I paid for both of them, mine at discount my wife's full price. I'm just giving my impression.

Your statement seems fair enough, although last weekends football sunday, a few guys and myself all had to PULL OUT to compare, and while there was about twenty people standing around watching us gloat over phones. there was not one person, that disputed that both my captivate and my friends epic blew the display away on every other phone that was there, including two evos and a droid x. As for the bluish tint I dont believe that my phone displays that at all ,and cant say that my friends epic had any sign of that either. I completely agree that the evo does seem a little more snappy, kind of like a galaxy after its rebooted and the bloatware is killed. I do not claim to have a superior device but I cannot agree that if I was to trade my phone for an evo that I would feel i made an upgrade. To some bigger is better, IMO the evo seems like a GREAT quality phone, but for its size seems AWFULLY feminine and lacks alot in what I consider a beautiful display. If you turn the brightness all the way up on my captivate, it can pretty much light a entirely dark room and eliminates the need for a flashlight all together. All in all I appreciate your feedback.

It's all preference. While vibrant colors is very attractive and is often perceived as better lots of people like the more realistc look of the way the EVO renders color. Too much color doesn't look real it looks atrificial or cartoonish. As another poster suggested bigger is better and the way it displays so large and clear at the same time is not like any other phone on the market.

Some phones have superior color rendering other have higher resolution on paper but none offer a combination of size of display, clarity, and rendering that the EVO does.

A think in general a lot of people think a smaller phone is more feminine and a bigger phone more masculine. I know a few girls who can't get it just because it won't necessarily fit or look good in their skinny jeans while a guy can usually pull it off no problem. Physical keypads are also definately more feminine at least IMO.

Fair enough. I too agree Sprint has produced two great competitive handsets finally and my wife tells me everyday 'I love my phone'. I can stick with Sprint now knowing that two of the cutting edge Android devices reside on their network and hopefully it will only get better. I definately was not going to re-up when my contract ended unless they stepped up their game.

The funny thing is, I thought the same about the Epic the moment I saw it re: feminine vs. masculine...that's why the wife has one.

@OP, this is the first I have read about the evo dropping calls. and I have to state that the evo has had the best reception out of any phone I have owned over the last 10 years. it really hasn't dropped any calls for me.

I guess it boils down to what appeals to the individuals eye. But I got you on one thing, The queen of all feminists uses an evo, yeah, Oprah Winfrey, just imagine how many 40 year old housewives own that phone. LOL

OP: Surprised you're having dropped calls... very surprised. I have had ZERO dropped calls on my EVO and have had it since three weeks after launch. My GF got her EVO on launch day and has had Zero dropped calls.. she lives way out on the edge of town, too. Been with Sprint since 1999 and my job (pilot) requires extensive travel... Sprint has always provided great coverage.

Sorry if it that statement came off in a way that made you feel uncomfortable. But lets be honest, the display is what sells these phones. tech specs are only impressive to us geeks and nerds. I married my wife because she was HOT not because she had a great OS.
2 million galaxys gone in two and a half months, flawed or not, thats a spec that cant be argued.
