Thats like buying a new car and having the AC not work.

You cant have a product with something that is advertised (and is used in tons of applications), and not have it functional. I am not one who is compaining about GPS, but I want i fixed because there are many times that I would use it for short navigation trips instead of getting my real GPS out. Its just the fact that GPS is such a big part of the phone, that there are so many complaints.

I'm not sure I understand why people should be happy with the phone as it is right now. It's an unfinished product (which is indisputable) that has been passed off as a fully functioning device. Are you correct in stating that the GPS is a minor feature and shouldn't be a dealbreaker to most people? Maybe to some, I'll give you that. some people actually depend the GPS though- this is a big issue for them.

I believe 100% that customers should hold Samsung accountable for this. You wouldn't buy a new, top of the line car that has a broken radio, would you? That is exactly what you have done by purchasing this phone.

This is all in addition to the fact that Samsung is stepping all over it's **** trying to fox the issue. It's been how many months without a straight answer? Not to mention the the broken OTA update that they evidently let slip trough the cracks.

tl;dr: We payed for a top of the line phone and deserve a working device and better support; we have the right to be upset, no matter what "amazing Crap the Cap can do that others CANT" (I can't think of anything, actually- but I can think of phones that have a working GPS and decent customer support)

I think the point Cheif714 was trying to make is that if everyone is so unhappy with the phone why don't you just return it?

if your outside your 30 days its your own fault: if you didn't realize your gps issue untill after 30 days then you obviously dont use it that much, and if you realized it quick but just assumed that it was being fixed and just waited untill after your 30 days then your just naive.

to further kollarism's analogy above: its like buying a new car and having the ac not work, then rather then returning the car because your unhappy, going on the cars forums and complaining about it until far after your return policy, then complaining that you cant return it

If something is defective in a product I say bitch the crap out of it and annoy the manufacturer endlessly until they fix it (or force a recall of the issue cannot be fixed through software). The Captivate is a great phone but people need to speak up when something isn't working the way it should. They are selling us a product and all the features in that product should work.

Should people have shut up about Microsoft releasing defective XBox 360s and just bought a new system when it inevitably died?

Should people have shut up about Apple's antenna flaw on the iPhone 4?

We're going to see more and more flawed products as companies rush to be the first to market and these devices get more and more complicated. The least they can do is correct the issues ASAP.

OK, so... 4 days after the update (oh.noes, I said update) today my GPS ( yea I said the g word) is completely dead. Sees zero sats and zero locks on lbs and GPS status. Cleared all the cache info, cold start, and over a half hour of testing nothing.

But, I guess I should just shut up about it because I can still make phone calls and surf the web, hey, I even have a navigation unit in my car. I can't use latitude, Google maps, or any other location based apps. But that's OK. I should live with it and be totally happy that I can change my notification sounds! I can't find the nearest.coffee shop or gas station when I am in a strange.town, but hey, I have a swyp keyboard. But it is all my fault because I didn't take it back when I could. Its my fault that I believed Samsung when they promised to fix it.

This is a technology forum, as such people come here to get help with problems and discuss neat features of their devices. That is just the nature of the game. Go to any other phone or computer forum and you'll always see the same thing.

You won't find a forum full of people congratulating themselves over their intelligent purchase of the ultimate device.

I'm glad people complain in these forums, it is the only way I can get a feeling for how widespread certain problems are. For example, if I'm about to buy a product and one guy has an issue, I'll likely ignore it. If 75% of people have an issue, I think I'll take it into consideration.

As for the CAP and the amazing things it can do. Ok, I can put a widget onto my home screen. Whoop de doo. I'd like it to first perform the functions it was advertised to, then we can talk about how great it is.

My phone not working is not my own fault, it is Samsung's.
The update being pushed back is not my fault, it is Samsung's.
Nobody assumed it was being fixed, Samsung promised it.

You've taken this analogy way too far. Air conditioners can't be fixed by a software update. If my volume keys were broken on my phone, you can bet your *** that I'd return it; the problem is that Samsung is luring us along with this "carrot on a stick" promise that the update is just around the corner.

This issue has changed from an honest mistake to a giant "**** you" to their customers.

Exactly!
Why would you buy a brand new car that has something wrong with it? You wouldn't. And If you did, you Would take it back and get another. If you realize its a problem with all the models I'm pretty sure you would simply get a refund or buy a completely different car.

Again.... quit b!itching.

If you're outside of your 30... deal with it and quit being a whiner.
if you're within your 30... trade it in for a half eaten apple.

PS. My GPS works great. :D

Brilliant... I agree!

When I see all this obsessing over the GPS I wonder how much, if any experience, some users have with _other_ smartphones.

These are complicated devices people! Not only that, there are many factors that come into play, far beyond just the technical side of the device. There is all the R&D time, the compromises the engineers must make to satisfy the stylists that determine what they want the phone to look like. Then there is the budget they're forced to adhere to in order to be price competitive. Then there's the wait they must endure as they deal with FCC approvals, patents etc. In other words, there is far more involved than many people realize.

Then to be fair, lets' set the discussion about the Captivate aside for one moment.

I'm a multi-platformist that is heavily invested in mobile communications and computing... IE: smartphones and laptops. I've owned over 40 smartphones of all makes and models over the last several years and I'm here to tell you they _all_ have issues. Currently I have four active lines and four phones that I test / use and evaluate.

My Droid X a very well respected, and sought after phone is not perfect, I could give you a list longer than that of the Captivate of it's issues. My iPhone 4 which is a platform that is far more mature than Android, still has issues that I find unacceptable.

So I don't buy into the Captivate is crap line of thinking. Not for a second. In fact I have been so pleased with the first one, I bought two more for family members. Having mine since day one and fully optimizing it for the best performance with 2.1 Eclair, this is my current favorite.

So... before you bash the Captivate and condemn it, perhaps you might want to think about all the others with their own unique set of problems.

Cheers... :)

Its funny I really like this phone but I have my problems, mainly the gps like a lot of people.. but its funny how people come to the defense of it like its there child or something.. I am passed the 30 day window and honestly dont really care, I would like for the phone to work as advertised of course... people say you cant expect EVERYTHING to work on it... that makes NO sense to me considering thats why you buy a smart phone is to have ALL those features... now I will run with this phone for at least a year because ATT lets me up grade every year but make no mistake about it, if Samsung cant support there products this will be the last purchase they get from me.. I like to actually support the company's who stand by there products and make quality device's. With out the gps working then a good chunk of programs and features on my phone dont work right: Compass, Places, Latitude, Maps, LAYAR, sky maps, etc... I understand some people would defend this phone just to justify there purchase even if there not totally happy with it but you have to hold the company's responsible when they release half finished products and then give there customers the run around.

btw I do have a tom tom which I have used since getting this phone and keep it in my glove box just in case... wish I didn't have to do that though.

Funny, I don't recall Samsung saying they couldn't or wouldn't support this phone. Just because a fix hasn't been issued within the time line that you may think is appropriate, doesn't mean you are right and they are wrong.

I like to actually support the company's who stand by there products and make quality device's.
I think it's safe to say we all feel this way... :)

Yet consider this, Apple who is widely held as a quality company has basically told those of us who own iPhone 4's to live with the antenna issues, that are a result of a faulty design.

Samsung has never told their customers to stuff it. And once again I am NOT advocating for Samsung, nor do I work for them, it's just the phone that we happen to be discussing.

I have an iPhone 4, Droid X, Droid 2, and Captivate, why would I care to defend one over the other?

I understand some people would defend this phone just to justify there purchase even if there not totally happy with it
This sounds like a generalization. I don't think that many people fall into this category at all.

Personally, I'm not married to any brand or model, I enjoy them all. But as a professional that works in this industry, I also have more insight into the challenges the companies face so I tend to be a bit more realistic and allow them time to deal with problems.

Finally here is a true fact... It's just a phone.... :)

I am one of the people who KNEW ahead of time that this phone might have GPS problems. I bought it and sure enough, GPS fail. I decided to keep it because of the promised fix (And it was promised. No doubt about that). So, I kept it past the 30 days. Recently the GPS has been better (post OTA update), but... and this is the real issue here, as someone else said earlier.

What is the only f-ing alternative to this phone on ATT?

"a half eaten apple."

So, that's really it. Either I pay a huge penalty and switch carriers, or stick with the best Android phone ATT has to offer.

At this point, I'm almost regretting not getting the Palm Pre.

The last road trip I went on, my wife's iPhone 4 and my Father-in-law's Palm Pre were happily navigating away while my phone was sitting there with its thumb up its butt. Ridiculous!

Of course, it was pretty funny hearing all the phones talking at the same time :D

I am seriously bothered by this "lesser of two evils mentality. I mean...of course you need a phone; it's obvious that you need to pick the one with fewer problems(I'll agree that the galaxy S phones are a good choice)- that doesn't mean that you need to act like Samsung's **** don't stink.

"There is all the R&D time, the compromises the engineers must make to satisfy the stylists that determine what they want the phone to look like."

not my problem- all of these engineers are payed well to produce working devices. No point trying to push the blame around like this anyways, they all work for Samsung.

"Then there is the budget they're forced to adhere to in order to be price competitive."

Budget is not an excuse to release a half-finished product. I hope to God that you don't honestly believe this, it's absolutely absurd.

" Then there's the wait they must endure as they deal with FCC approvals, patents etc. In other words, there is far more involved than many people realize.
"

How is that my problem? Architects are paid to create buildings that are up to code and safe for the public. Musicians are paid to master instruments that are difficult to play. Professional football players are paid to stay in great physical shape and play the game at a a certain level- nobody says "Hey guys, TO is trying reeallly hard- romo was just throwing the passes reaally fast- those are hard to catch, let's cut him some slack, mmmk?"

I'm not going to go to a fine restaurant and settle for a cold side of potatoes just because the steak was cooked to perfection- I pay the establishment to provide me with a well-cooked meal and that's exactly what I expect.

Bottom line, people goto forums to get help and ideas. To share tips and tricks and also to complain.

it's not a question of "if you dont like the phone, go return it and stop complaining" its a question of "if you dont like the complaining, find another forum"

Most of the complaints are civil, and easy for someone who doesnt want to read them, to skip them.

I completely understand that people come here for help. The reason I wrote this was because at the time, 20 out of 25 threads were about the gps issue "some" are having or that the update didn't give what you were hoping for.
My wife's gps sucks horribly... mine works off and on... but seriously... 20 out of 25 threads on the first page are crying about the same thing??

Dood... just print out your f@cking directions on your printer if you need them that badly. Hell... Google maps blows anyways.... I can't tell you how many times it's told me to turn down a street that doesn't exist when I'm on my way to a clients.

I'm just sick of seeing GPS this and GPS that. Put it in one thread and move on!

Even now I see 10 out of 25 threads about GPS issues and what not. I know that's just because it's Sunday.... wait til tomorrow....
