Hi All

I am a very very new person to this domain. I had a HTC Hero Touch G2 (with the 1.5 stock version) and some thing went wrong so called T-Mobile who agreed to exchange the handset.
Now got a new handset which is running 2.1 official version.

My questions are
1. Can I root my phone? If yes then can you please direct me to a guide?
2. Do I have to downgrade my phone to 1.5 before I start root process? or can I start it from 2.1 itself?

I have been searching on Google since morning but not able to find great deal of details on my questions.

Please help. Thanks in advance.

Thanks
Raj

Ok, if you want to root to use titanium backup, use this .apk. Install it using Astro or any other file manager, then you'll have to run it or something (presumably).

Then you need a recovery menu, which is the thing that does the actual flashing. If you download 'ROM Manager' by from the market, this can install a clockwork recovery menu for you. Then you can, either using ROM manager or the actual recovery menu (boot holding home + power to access this), flash a new ROM.

What do you want out of the new ROM? 2.1 or 2.2? HTC Sense or Vanilla android? Are you willing to go for something a bit more bleeding edge and prone to buggyness to gain some extra speed/features? Or would you rather go for stability?

Thanks Xyro.

I would go for stability first, once I get around everything and understand things will start looking at speedy ROM's. Do you recommend any?

Thanks for your instructions, never thought it is so simple (or may be I am at to go through some brainer).

Will keep you posted about the status once I reach home.

Hi Xyro

Sorry, ignore my last post. I have just registered and downloaded the file. Didn't realise that it's a different forum.

Thanks
Raj

Thanks.

This is the best 2.1 ROM IMO :) 2.2 ROMs aren't too polished yet, so 2.1 is a better stable choice. It's based on the official ROM so it's got HTC Sense too.

Yeah, 2.1 is actually much easier to root than 1.5, strangely :)

Before you go flashing though, make sure you back up your current ROM using ROM Manager/Clockwork recovery menu. You will also want to backup anything not saved to the sdcard, such as apps.

I have been trying the same method as smakme7757 used and it tries to boot into recovery but I am getting the phone with red triangle symbol. I waited 10 minutes then tried again x3 but still no luck!

can anyone help, really wanna make this work

Cheers
Woody

It sounds like you haven't flashed the recovery image properly.

I would recommend using the guide at the bottom of this post. Unlike the other guide, everything is done on the phone so there's less to go wrong :)
