What HTC now says about bump charging

I've looked around and haven't seen this in other threads, but I've been in contact with HTC about the bump charging issue, and here is the "final" response I just received

I do understand that it is time consuming to charge your battery in this way. This process is being adapted by most batteries as a way for the customer to give their device a refresh or Soft Reset which clears out the used RAM like your computer would when you power cycle it. When you charge it while it is powered on there are some applications that run in the background that will use the power which brings the battery down to the 90% once it is unplugged. That is why we recommend this process for charging your Incredible. Charging it in this way will also maintain and extend your battery life. I do apologize , for any inconvenience that this may cause you.

What a bunch of junk. Used Ram on a battery? I don't even buy that running in the background stuff although more feasible than the above.

As for bump charging with 2.2 it does work. You might need to check your charger or your battery. I only need to turn the phone off, not unplug and replug. And certainly only once! Not sure what is wrong with your charging.

If that's an official company response...how sad. With GPS, wifi, autosync, and 3G enabled, I run about a full day with moderate usage (email, phone calls and browsing) for 10 minutes every other hour or so.

But once I use Navigation, Pandora, or any other useful program, my battery drains out completely within 20 minutes. I have also had my phone shutdown numerous times when using Navigation and Pandora at the same time, probably due to heat.

dunno, worked fine with 2.1 and the bump charging was perfect. haven't installed ANYTHING new on 2.2 since i got it and bump charging doesn't work.

See I just charge my phone while its off and once. Its green I turn it on. It will drop to 99 after boot and it will stay there for about an hour if I don't touch it. Or it will drop 5.% an hour if I'm surfing on wifi. My advise its to just charge it while its off. Like any phone its good to turn it off every 24 hours for about 5 min. I have always did this with all my smart phones and never ran into a issue.

My wife just got a Droid 2 last week, and I have to say I am jealous of the battery life. On Saturday we went to an amusement park, with me bump charging the whole way up. Spent 5 or 6 hours there, and my battery was in the 60's, while hers was still above 90%. Yesterday we went to a birthday party for a few hours. Her battery was at 99%, while mine lost 15% or so. Oh well, this why I bought 5 or 6 batteries on ebay and keep them all around!

you know i wouldnt be NEARLY as pissed about this horrible battery life after FROYO if they hadnt made the recharge take SOOOO frickin long now... before if i was down to 50% or so id just plug it in for 30-45 mins and it would be back to 100% easily. now if i throw it on the charger (A/C) it takes hours just to move 50%. ive gone to bed with 20% battery left, plugged it in at 10pm and woken up at 2am to use the bathroom and its still not at 100% yet. thats just unacceptable. before my phone never overheated while charging. My blackberry curve which i had for 2 yrs prior and my samsung flip phone could recharge from dead to full in about an hour or so. so annoying

*end rant*

man screw bump charging. I use stock battery, and still get two days outta it when I need. One day no problems. I never bump charge. But I do charge the phone off. Always. Takes hardly any time. I will throw it on the charger before going to bed I'll go on my computer do a few responses on this site. and in an hour/ hour and a half, full charge, turn it on and use it for an alarm clock. and I go all night, wake up use it all day and either charge it again that night or not if I don't need to. (I'm in college, I don't use the phone heavily as I'm so tied up with homework, please don't comment on how I "use" MY phone, thanks.)

Did you recalibrate the battery after Froyo? (to do that, drain the battery COMPLETELY so that NOTHING happens when you try to turn it on. And then charge it COMPLETELY, preferably while off.)

The update erases the previous calibration data.

So, basically, he told you whatever he had to say to get you to stop emailing/calling.

It's not official, it's just some yokel spouting any stupid thing that comes to mind.
As for Nav and Pandora, yikes! Why would you do that off a charger? You're lucky you get even 20 minutes.

Why not just wipe battery stats?

Because it isn't really about erasing the old, wrong battery stats as much as it is writing the new, better ones. You want to completely define what an empty and full battery levels are. If you did just erase the battery stats, you'd see improvement, but not as much or as quick as recalibrating.

And that's why that's the consensus suggestion on here, XDA, cyanogen, and from HTC and VZW.

FOOTNOTE: In the interest of completeness, Cyanogen recommends recalibrating the battery AND deleting the battery stats.
